This is actually quite tough.
Loose one match in round 1, and you might finish second in your group.....

The China trails are the best. All the matches are so intense, every point matters, and you get to see the top players in the world get pushed to their limits.
Does Anyone know who the 12 players are, and is the format the same for men and women?
This is my all time favorite match, it was played in the 2013 China trials. Ma Long vs Fan Zhendong. What a nail bitter.

According to Liu Guoliang in a recent interview, the six players that are confirmed to participate in 2013 World Tour Grand Finals, i.e. Zhang Jike, Ma Long, Xu Xin, Wang Hao, Fan Zhendong, Yan An, will automatically qualify for the first stage, and the remaining six players will be decided later. However, he only said that the other six players will be chosen from a group of 20 players, but did not elaborate on how the selection system works.
As for women's team, Kong Linghui said that the trial will also consist of two stages. In the first stage, some players from Team B will compete with players from Team A in Round Robin system for 8 spots in the second stage. However, the four players with top ten world ranking (Ding Ning, Liu Shiwen, Li Xiaoxia, Wu Yang) will not participate in the first stage but automatically qualify for the second stage.

If i get you right, you mean all of the 12 layers will play each other in first stage. But i think they will be divided into 4 groups and they will play robin in that groups. The winner of each group will be in the team. In the second stage the 8 player that hasn't been selected for the team will play in a knock-out system and the winner will get the last empty spot of the team.
So i'm right or wrong?Zhang Jike : Man Of Steel

Yes, all of the 12 players will play each other in the first stage to compete for the first spot in the five men team.
Then the 8 players in the second stage will play knock out to compete for the second spot.
The remaining three spots will be decided by the coaching team.

That's one thing we Chinese fans have been wondering too because Liu Guoliang did not specify how the 8 players will be selected for the second stage. Our guess is the top 8 of the remaining 11 players. I have been following this and will let you know as soon as I have updates on how the second stage works.

This is more intense than the singles, where there are 7 spots. This year only 5 will go.... Nice to Hao Shuai and the two junior players who competed at the WJTTC. It will be on early that we will know who will go to Tokyo. Some intense stuff coming up!
