Well it is true that he played well against Ma Long but every so often that happens to Ma Long where he plays someone who is not so good but then he plays them and it seems like they are better than they normally are. It is often players who have good backhands. I remember Seiya Kisikawa beating him 4-0 in some tournament and he could not figure out what to do against Kishakawa and at the time Kishakawa had a world ranking of something like 69th. And even if Tokic looked like he played well, it is true that he has been rated somewhere between 40-50 for a long time and then somewhere between 50-100 before that. His highest ranking was 38th and he was only that on a few different months.

Haha yeah I remember that Kishikawa event :DWell it seems that he needs to be a smarter player rather than looping brutally from both wings without much strategy :)

I agree. That is also why Wang Hao beat him. Wang Hao out thought him and out strategized him when he started to dominate in their semi-final matchup. When Wang Hao tried to mess with Zhang Jike in the finals, Jike took two games but he adjusted. Wang Hao is smart but a really good player should be able to adjust to stuff like that.

Yeah Tokic did well against Ma Long, but that could just be because they're styles match up well, and in favor of Tokic. That is what separates good players from great players. Great players can win out even when they are playing against a style that is strong against them.

And in regards to Ma Long, I have been saying that about his style for a while. It looks great, and is amazing, but against a certain style of player, unless he is playing perfectly he has trouble. Those players who are good at blocking back shots with good consistency and can aim those blocks relatively well. Ma Long still usually wins, but if he is having an off day he ends up losing, where as some other Chinese players with different styles wouldn't lose. Ma Long is already insanely fast, but there is a limit as to how fast a human can react, so a good blocker can cause him trouble. Ma Long definitely needs to start working on tactics and strategy and not just being insanely good at looping from both sides, if he wants to reach his follow potential. He also needs work on his short game, thats why he loses to Wang Hao, and why he doesn't beat Boll all the time, while Hao does the overwhelming amount of times.

tokic played the game of his life probably, that's why they were even.
he was making crazy shots that nobody does, like counterlooping with backhand ma long's full power forehand loop, crazy....
the main thing I think he lacked in order to actually beat ma long was a more powerful/varied forehand far from table (more power, using sidespin, etc. like the chinese do)
as for ma long, his main weakness seems to be mental.

Wow!!! He played really great, amazing match by tokic.

This reminds me a bit about me.... When i played against someone who played in the 1st division in my country(he wasnt the best but anyway), I could say I played than better than him , but even there I wasn't able to beat him just because of his routine, and his normal play etc. Its just like in the game here, but I'm sure he'll be very happy! about this match ,perhaps a bit disappointed because he could have win. (just like in my case ^^)
