Hello!

Im quit new here :-)

I play with Stiga NCT Offensive Wood blade, 2.0mm red Boost TX on my FH and 2.0mm black Almana Sound on my BH.

Im looking for another Stigarubber on my BH, since Stiga doesnt produce Almana anymore. Any advice? I'm a offensive BH player who have played for 3 years now, 15 years old and 30th ranked of my age in Norway (just for you to look at my potential in a Norwegian scale). My BH is like a mix of Michael Maze and Werner Schlager.

Thanks!!

I play with Tibhar Illusion Killer and on FH Hexer Powersponge und BH Tibhar Nimbus (even if it's quite old still one of the best rubbers for blocking, I tested one of the pre-sale testing examples and since then no other rubber touched my BH :) )

Since you twiddle, would you really call it forehand and backhand rubber? Don't you use both rubbers on both sides at times? :)

Good luck with your new setup. :)

You got it right man :)
But I chose the Neo which is softer but by no mean mushy. Hope it works well without sacrificing too much control. Too bad the minimum thickness in the shop was the max.
The Donic blade is soft and flexible TTdb rate it 3 out of 10. Should be good but can't say now because I haven't tried it myself.

Calibra LT is the most wonderful rubber iv'e played with. Using it on my backhand atm, but im ripping of the Spin version (FH) very soon in order to double up on the LT-original. Would be nice to hear your verdict and comparison on the Xiom.

It definitely is!
I actually have both as test rubbers in 2.0mm on my clipper cc and must say these rubber are really great.
The XVE sponge is softer than the CLT sponge, but it looks better (xiom's black carbo sponge ftw). The CLT creates more spin especially when serving due to its tackier topsheet and it is also a bit faster than the XVE. I would say the throw angle of both rubbers are quite similiar, maybe the CLT's is slightly higher, but both are in the medium (-high) area. When you have a look at the sound, the XVE is the best I have ever heard. If you hit the ball hard and at the sweetspot is just like "PENG" and everyone in the hall can hear it. Short-short play works great with both rubbers, just like topspin-topspin and blocks. Also the trampoline effect is quite great, so you can play explosive balls from far off the table.
OK, now I can't say anything more because I don't know anything more, sorry about that, but the XVE is definitely a great BH rubber. I hoped this helped you but keep in mind that the comparison is based on my subjective impressions.

Could you tell us if you prefer the Calibra over the Xiom Vega or not? I never tried Stiga rubbers, but many people recommend them here. Are they very different from Xiom's series?

Yes, I prefer the Calibra LT over the Xiom Vegas, for my forehand at least.
As you may know, I played a Xiom Vega Elite before, but it got too soft and slow for my forehand. So I wanted to have a rubber with a harder sponge. The Vega Europe is harder than the Elite, but it is still soft (medium-soft) and the Pro and Asia have a hard sponge. What is missing in the Vega series is a rubber with a medium-hard sponge.
The Stiga Calibra Series has one with a medium-hard sponge, the Calibra LT. It also has rubbers with a soft (Sound), a medium-soft (Spin) and a hard (Plus) sponge, so you have a wider pallete of sponge hardness. What I don't recommend is the Boost series, especially when you are playing in a hall with high air humidity (they will lose grip).
What you also should mind is the price. The Stiga rubbers are about 10€ more expensive than the Xiom Vega rubbers.
In my opinion I would say that the Calibra and the Vega series are pretty similiar, but I cannot really compare because a played the softer rubbers (Elite and Europe) of the Vega series and the harder rubbers of the Calibra series (LT and LT Plus).
Now I hope I cleared up your question, if not, just ask xD

Btw: the long trajectory ad from the Calibra series somehow seems to work^^

i tried calibra lt sound in red 2 mm , very very fast and rather low throw angle, but not enough spin , very difficult to do a SHORT push , also not enough spin when pushing with heavy backspin, very little control , only for pure attack, indeed long ball trajectory

nice sound though ! almost as if speed glued

overall ONLY suited for pure attackers

On which blade have you tried it? Maybe the lack of control is not caused by the rubber

I tried it on a Donic Waldner senso carbon, which has normally a good control, then i tried it on my Stiga Tube Allround and then on an older Donic Persson Powerplay and it was always the same problem of really no feeling of control and not enough spin.

I have to say that i first played with this Calibra LT Sound on a Donic Sawtec Baum Offensive blade and on this it was very explosive but with very good spin, this blade is VERY VERY stiff apparently and gave the Calibra LT Sound its real potential i have to say. It was really the combination which was the most like the old speed glue feel (sound and spin and speed). Still not suited to do short pushes but this was also the case with the old speedglue.

This experience made me buy a Calibra LT a few days later, it felt that good on this blade !

In the competition matches after this change i played with it but couldn't get enough spin in my service with it and also my topspins were just too often coming back (clearly more than normally , the opponents could just block them back too often).

I find it really really strange to hear that people talk about good control with this rubber. Even my Donic Coppa JO Gold , which has really a lot of speed and spin has a lot more control.

I am really disappointed in the Calibra LT Sound.

I have two paddles :
The first is for modern defence /all - round play :
Blade:Matsu****a Pro
FH: DHS Hurricane 3 1.8 Red
BH: DHS Cloud and Fog 3 1.0 Black right now , but i sometimes switch it with Friendship 802-40 short pips .

Offence setup:
Blade: DHS Hurricane WL
FH: DHS Hurricane 2 Neo 2.2 Black
BH: DHS G555 2.2 Red

As you can see i am a big fan of DHS products as i think they are good value for money and so far i am not dissapointed . I especially love my offence setup since i recently switched from being a modern defender/all-round player to an all-out attacker . I read a lot on the forums that the combination of H-WL blade + Hurricane 2 NEO would be hard to manage , but i really fell in love with it and G555 is a really good backhand rubber . This setup is a little bit heavy and tires me out more quickly then when i play my defence setup , but i get better training and my strength and speed increases with it .

I have only one question :
The person who glued my rubbers on my offence setup used the old VOC glue since he didn't have a VOC free one . It felt amazing with the speed glue effect , it feels pretty good right now even without it . Should i reglue my rubbers with a VOC free glue since i don't plan on regularly reglueing it with the speed glue or stay with the VOC one as it is right now ?

There's nothing comparable to speed glue effect. The speed glue is banned, period. But if you're using the equipment for recreational play, it's okay. Though you may not reglue it for tournament purposes, if your opponent ask the match referee to check your blade, and you're found using speed glue, you may be disqualified.

Well i never did want to use speed glue in the first place . It's just that at that moment there was no VOC free glue there and i ended up using it because i wanted to play . I don't like reglueing rubbers in the first place , because there is a chance at damaging my equipment as i did not varnish my blade . Is there any benefits of using a VOC free glue if i don't plan on reglueing my rubbers after that at all other then that i could get disqualified from some tournaments ?

azlan
01-22-2012, 07:37 AM
Good point Raga4. Yeah, you did mention that the place didn't have VOC free glue available. In terms of performance, there's nothing come close to speed glue. I grew up using the stuff for decades. I bet if the ban is lifted (in la la land:)), everyone would switch back to it in a heart beat.

Because of the ban too, that most rubber producers are producing post speed-glue-ban type of rubbers. Rubbers like Tenergy, Calibra and the likes are good examples, giving what the manufacturers said "the speed glue effect" by using VOC free glue. I've tried Tenergy & Calibra with speed glue, and they're insanely superb.

So to answer your question buddy, there are no real advantages/benefits by using VOC free glue, because nowadays you just have to. It sticks your modern high tension rubbers to your blade, and that's it. There's no point using speed glue for 5-6 months without reglueing regularly..you might as well just use VOC free glue for that.:)

I've heard his story Sir and its quite funny but is cool.
It was good old times when Sriver is king. Then Sir KB's eye suddenly saw the Sriver Killer and thought WOW it must be much better than Sriver!
Then he spend much money on sth which turns out to be spinless! xD
But it opens his eye to the wisdom of.. THE DARKSIDE!!

Heard this story @ OOAKForum :)
Anyways welcome to the forum Sir KB :D Its great to see another darksider here!

Wow Sir Az, 1001st post! Congrats and welcome to the club ;P

02-28-2012, 02:13 PM
chugtai, i think tenergy 64 has a similar problem of chipping from the edges as it is also a soft rubber.

you could try the good old Butterfly Sriver or Sriver FX which did not have this problem. There is good spin and control, but not as much speed as a tenergy.

many sites have charts showing spin, speed and control of different surfaces, but they do not have any indication of the durability of these rubbers.

If you do decent blocking of topspins, you could try a harder sheet like in the Bryce series. It will give you a good punch but not that good a loop.

All the best in your efforts to improve, Chugtai.

ty for the comment i am sorry for the late reply i didnt see this thread until now since i posted last time well one of my friends r using bryce on their backhand because it has alot of control i have RAKZA 7 on my forehand now nd its working great i wanted to ask that i want to change my backhand rubber previously i was using tibhar rapid i was suggested by someone to look at stiga boost fx for BH plzzz tell me what should i do ty

After about 8 months using a Bty Michael Maze Off Carbon and Tibhar Sinus Sound fh and Nimbus Sound bh, I have just changed back to my favourite blade!
After my Donic Waldner Senso Carbon blade broke in around July last year I lost my game and the Maze just wasn't the same.

Back to it now though with Donic Coppa X2 Platin Soft on both sides. Here's hoping my game comes back with it.

Hello Karl, I tried using my friend's old Clipper WRB, I like the speed, short game and looping of the blade also liked the control but I can definitely feel vibrations upon ball contact. After extended play (2 hours or more) my fingers start to feel numb and my hand seem to tire easily because of the vibration. Is this normal for Clipper blade?

I am looking to buy a new blade and rubbers ( hope it might improve my game ? ) and have noticed a very high percentage of users with a Timo Boll spirit blade with Tenergy 05 combination. tis high percentage must prove that this is a winning and stable set up . ?? but at over £ 200 price in the uk it is quite an investment.
Any advice comments to help me take the plunge

Just got a back-up blade yesterday and bought a new rubber for it.

Blade: Timo Boll ALC
Rubbers: FH New Tibhar 1Q BH Re-used Tibhar Aurus

How do I like it?

It is just swell. I could use this for a primary setup and miss nothing.

How is your FH rubber compared to a T05?

How is your FH rubber compared to a T05?

Much less expensive! Haha.

1Q seems to play just like Aurus, but with a little more pace and a better even more elastic topsheet, even if the sponge is totally different.

I like the blade from Tak9.com Headquarters in a used, but new condition at a significant discount.

Haha good point! So it could be used as an BH rubber as well since the more elastic topsheet? Sorry but which blade are you referring to? Nice site... is it Korean?

i not sure if tenergy comes in 2.0 i think tenergy max is 2.1 anyway i usually put max thickness on my FH and a thinner sponge on my BH before but now i use max on both sides i dont know the max thickness of rakza, so if rakza is thicker than T64 i would choose r7 as my FH rubber, having said that i also like harder rubber on my FH and from what i remember r7 is a tad harder that T64, i didnt like R7 on my BH but T64, i can use it on both BH and FH

its a matter of preference of the rubber you feel more comfortable with to use on your BH or FH

Almost complete control on the Forehand block, counter spin(Slow/Fast) and smash over the table on a low ball. I can try a lot of things but the main aim is to control an aggressive opponent.

I have a new setup. For a long time I was using a Clipper with DHS Hurricane 3 NEO on the forehand and Tenergy 05 on the backhand. A few friends who are pros recommended that a slower blade with softer rubbers is better for someone learning technique. Now they were not actually telling me to change my equipment. They were answering questions I had that were for a friend who was getting a new setup. But I started listening.

My next setup which I used for about 9 months was Stiga Allround NCT with Hurricane NEO forehand and Tenergy 05 backhand. So I listened to what they said about the blade but not the rubber. :)

Then, recently, I decided to listen about the rubber. And I had felt a different blade that is about the same speed and the same weight but the surface is softer for more control, dwell time and spin. So I got that blade, and here is my most recent setup:

Stiga Allround Evolution
FH: Black Xiom Omega IV Pro
BH: Red Xiom Omega IV Europe.

The softer rubber fore forehand (Omega IV Pro is softer than Hurricane) and the even softer rubber for my backhand (Omega IV Europe is softer than Omega IV Pro) have made a huge difference in my game.

The idea that the pros had was this. An all wood blade that is rated Off- or All+ so you can feel the ball better and have good control and touch helps you learn certain things about what to do while the ball is on the surface of the rubber while you are spinning. The softer rubber for letting the ball sink in and developing the touch of mechanical spin for the same reason, will help you develop your technique more than a carbon composite blade and harder faster rubbers. When you already have developed the technique and have good habits and good touch, playing with faster blades with carbon and less feeling is okay and when you have that technique, playing with the harder rubbers works as well. But first, you want to develop the technique and feeling.

Markvee

Good advice.
For even more ball feel, thinner sponge can also be a good idea. 1.8-2.0mm.
With traditional hard Chinese sponges, you can feel the ball on the blade relatively well with in 1.5mm or less.

Just received pair of Xiom rubbers , Vege Europe(FH) and Omega 4 Elite(BH) glues to a Peter Freunlieb custom blade (7ply wood) and I am now 100% happy with rubber choice.
I will replace the Tin Arc3 (BH) rubber with the Omega 4 Elite my T11+ (Xiom Vega Europe/Tin Arc3) as it so good for BH push and blocks.

Xiom Solo FL is what I use now after playing for about 2-3 years with a Clipper.

Hello Anders

I'm interested in your blade, how does it compare to some common blades such as Timo Boll Spirit, Viscaria or a Clipper? Can you describe how it feels and play compared to other well known blades?

Hi Knuckle Ball! Sorry for the late answer, I have been out on training camps for almost 3 weeks now..

About the blade.. It's amazing, hehe.. But no, it plays like a mix between the Clipper and the Boll Spirit.. It's really light, so it feels like your arm is just longer, but not unnaturally heavy at the end :p

I don't know if I can compare it exact to other blades, because it is really special.. Amazing for short play, loop vs loop and third ball attacks. Especially the backhand play and service game feels good with this.

If you like to play spin or speed, this is the blade, but I have to say, it requires some feeling to use this, if you have zero feeling, it will be useless. So it's a blade for highly trained players or players with natural feel for the ball. The better you get as a player, the better the blade will fit you.
