06-20-2011, 11:09 PM
Lets use this thread for all the updates/ videos and news from the Shakehand vs Penhold 2011 tournament which begins tomorrow.

In the last 2 months we have seen some fantastic table tennis across the globe including the World Table Tennis Championships in Rotterdam and the more recent China Open 2011. In Shenyang (China) tomorrow begins the Direct and Cross Battle against the best shakehand and penhold players in the world. The Shakehand vs Pernhold tournament begins tomorrow the 21st June 2011.

This match up has been chosen by you the viewers in an online poll. The direct team includes Wang Hao, Ma Lin and Ryu Seung Min. The cross team includes Ma Long, Zhang Jike and European superstar Timo Boll. The format of the competition will follow a Olympic type game. Liu Guoliang quotes, ‘ I cannot be more thankful from the support of the fans’.

This tournament has bought Timo Boll back into the equation of world table tennis as we haven’t seen him since the WTTC 2011. Its reported that Timo Boll has been signed on to participate in the China Super League but due to homeland commitments he has yet to participate.

There were 7 polls over the internet to decide the different game match line ups. The first line up would be to do an Olympic system, the second system to do three singles and two doubles and the third system to do four singles and one double. The decision was made by the majority of the fans to do the Olympic system. Liu Guoliang has thanked the fans for voting and explaining how the amazing figures for the number of votes shows the love for table tennis amongst the fans. The fans want the charm of an Olympic style system.

06-21-2011, 06:47 AM

Video Video Video Video (sung in a cheerful and rhythmic way...)

I saw most of them live on CCTV5... here are the details:
Ma Lin won against Timo Boll (Penhold lead 1-0) ;

Zhang Jike won against Wang Hao (Tied 1-1) ;

Zhang Jike / Ma Long won against Ma Lin / Ryu Seung Min (Shakehand lead 2-1) ;
Wang Hao won against Timo Boll (Tied 2-2) ;

Ma Long won against Ryu Seung Min (one game match, and Shakehand won 3-2)

06-21-2011, 04:33 PM
Wow I'm like the only one who voted Penhold? Why :P I think Ryu and Boll can only win against each other, and Ma Long loses to WH and ML would be my guess. ZJK against WH and ML I would consider equal chances. But I understand it is already played?

06-21-2011, 05:09 PM
Timo seemed like he hadn't no chance... I think it's because of the jetlag and that he came the day before.. Not good conditions to play against very good players I think ^^
Was that everything? :(
I want more and more and more :D (Ok, I'm an official table tennis freak ^^)

P.S.: TTProvider has already 2 videos on his channel

06-21-2011, 05:24 PM
The outcome wasn't that surprising

Ryu has no chance against Ma Long,
While Wang Hao and Ma Lin usually beat Boll.

06-21-2011, 05:28 PM
Yeah, but at least Boll shows some resistance but not now ^^
He has the abilities to beat them I think, I still believe ^^

06-21-2011, 07:55 PM
Well with Xu Xin instead of Ryu Seung Min it would be much different..So it seems .. that Penhold is better..In fact maybe it would be different with change - if Ma Long played matches that Timo played, it would be much much different!I think it would be 5:0 that way ;-)

06-21-2011, 09:42 PM
Of course, the manner you put the players on the list, is really important. If you would just change one person, it would have been a completely different match!

06-21-2011, 11:16 PM
Hope you all enjoyed the event. You can find all five matches here in one media library. http://www.tabletennisdaily.co.uk/forum/media.php?do=category&cid=53

The doubles match should have been:
Xu Xin Ma Lin vs Timo Boll Ma Long

That would have been spectacular, esp. with Xu Xin's trick shots.

06-22-2011, 06:43 AM
Thx Dan :)

06-22-2011, 09:57 AM
I think Ryu was pretty good, in the doubles he was maybe better than Ma Lin. He should have beaten Ma Long though :P 9-6 and missing an easy shot haha. But they all had a great time and I think the spectators as well :) Nice event.

06-22-2011, 10:11 AM
Too bad Timo arrived one hour before the match, would have been much more interesting with him in good shape.
Great event nevertheless, I love to see those players having fun together! :)

wait really? at least from the video i was watching, Ma Lin was the one who did all the hard parts of the points, and it was his touch that kept them in the points that they ended up winning.

06-23-2011, 05:18 AM
Well from the highlights it is hard to judge of course. But I thought Ryu played pretty good, made some nice points and I saw some errors from Ma. Also he almost won against Ma Long. I was just responding to the people that said they wanted Xu Xin on the team ;)

yus go the shakehanders, slightly disappointing performance from Boll! however overall expected result I think

06-23-2011, 01:00 PM
They all had a great time and it was nice to see how they are :)

Yup, thats right.. Despite the discussion here about A is better than B, the important thing is that they had fun :)

Again you're right YosuaYosan :D

Anyways - here is what I spotted:
Most non asian shakehanders have real problems to beat penholders..
From this stage penholding style when mastered seems to be much better..
But - as I told my girlfriend - only way that Timo can win world title is, that Ma Long beats Wang Hao in semis, because Timo is not used for Haos penholding style.. Frankly, the spin and game is different.. Penholder has no problem to play shakehander, because there are mostly shakehanders.. But unless you are from China, you hardly meet penholder..
So I think - year in China´s superleague for top Europe players would make shakehand style equal to penhold..
But till then penhold is more effective..
Better? None is better..
You can see - Zhang beat Hao .. He can beat Ma Lin ..
Timo cant.. because they are penholders.. They are not really better.. Just Timo is not enough comfortable to their style..

For Example .. not sure where,.. but I saw Wang Hao vs. Jean Michel Saive..
Saive lost 4:0 .. but.. it was 3:0 and not sure for points in fourth.. but Saive had one problem everytime he served..
Wang Hao played his reverse backhand spin and he NEVER put it back deep enough .. when he even put it on the table..
Then he resignated and served into Haos backhand .. expecting that spin .. and decided to just smash it..
That smash landed on table and the crowd (it was in Belgium) went crazy, hehe..
Was nice.. but it was just what I am talking about.. Europe shakehanders are NOT USED TO PENHOLDING STYLE.

06-23-2011, 10:01 PM
Indeed, like you say,Timo isn't used to Penholders because in Europe there aren't many, except the Asian Penholders who play in Europe ;)
Of course, playing in the Chinese Superleague would help the European players to developp their game and improve. It's a good thing that Timo plays in these league. It will surely help him a lot! After being there, you get more and more used to Penholders because there are more of them.
That's one advantage for the chinese penholders, the european shakehanders have a lots of problems against them because it is completely different (spin, strokes, ...)

06-24-2011, 01:00 AM
I think you are correct to some extent. That part of the reason why penholders do so well against Europeans is because they aren't used to playing them. But in another respect, they do badly simply because penholders are the masters of the short game. And when you control the short game, you control who attacks first. It's why Ma Long loses to Wang Hao, while Ma Lin doesn't. Ma Long's short game isn't up to par with the penholders therefore because he can't attack first, he has to react to Wang Hao's first loop, which more often than not, is too high quality even for Ma Long's counter looping style of play.

Boll has played penholders plenty of times in the past, not only has he played in the super league in previous years, but there are players like Wang Jianjun who play in the Euro leagues. Wang Jianjun even played either on the same team as Boll or practices in the same gym with him often, because I have seen several videos of them in the same gym. So I don't think its necessarily so much that Boll isn't used to penhold, but just that, his short game, is even worse than Ma Longs.

Again you're right YosuaYosan :D

Thanks for the constant support bro :)
