View Full Version : Which song(s) do you listen to before matchplay??

As the topic says, which song(s) do you listen to, to get prepared for matchplay?

Like hugo calderano said he's listening to "the final countdown"

Lately i often listen to that trap song 'Badman' from the tropkillaz when i get ready for matchplay. And then the hookline "badman forward, badman pull up"gets stuck in my head and comes back during the match and i start "pulling" like there's no tomorrow.
:D
That song makes me go wild and still keep my cool at the same time and as well make me keep my natural rhythm.

So I never really thought about music with Table Tennis.

But back when I used to skate this song "Burn It Up" by Offsping was one of the things I used to listen to while getting ready for competitions.

It was easy to find just the video of the music but it goes so much better with the skating from this video. The song starts around 1:50 but the stuff that leads up to it from about 1:40 is pretty funny:

I used to listen to any instrumental song before any match. Just to calm my nerves.
But these days, I just watched any tournament on Youtube just to grab some extra idea on getting point while planning how to get my points.

Classicals and instrumentals are bretty guid too. Nocturne is beautiful.
Canon In D (pachelbel?), River flows in you (Yiruma, maybe played a bit too much doe) or even Clair De Lune.. Sickest (or most complex/difficult?) Piano piece though, is Moonlight Sonata (no 14, op 27) 3rd movement.
For other instrumentals I'd probs go for dubchestral, this one is pretty sike/motivating.

I never listen to one particular song, but if I had to pick just one, I'd probably go for "Tired of Waiting" by Nomeansno. And since I usually go to my matches straight from work, which is a 10-minute walk, I'd add a couple of other random NMN songs to the playlist.

Some of my go-to's when I'm on my way to a game, workout, or exam:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySaWSxpb14g

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6amhC0c6V08

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2ZljzdGPUg

Two things that I'd consider slightly "different" but never fail to get me into the zone are Tiesto's Adagio for Strings and Forever Today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tIgN7eICn4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtJju8htq0A

Besides those, there are couple of "classics" that I don't think I have to link such as Em's Lose Yourself, Till I Collapse, Phenomenal or Fort Minor with Remember the Name.

For German thinking folk, I would say listening to "Vergangen, Vergessen, Voruber" since it is a good mentality to forget mistakes and move on.

That song has got to be one of the corniest old school songs one would never want to get caught listening to, but it has a lot of value.

Wow, that's an amazing selection. Could have been mine.

However, I prefer a moment of quietude before matchplay, concentrating only on breathing for a minute or two. If that really doesn't help putting me in the now and here only, there's another Nocturne that helps me more:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHccd-7WJK0

... and there's Arvo Pärt:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZe3mXlnfNc

… and Satie's Gnossiennes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlcM-f4aBDI

... and the Goldberg Variations:

After the match, I might pick myself up using:

It depends on my mood. Sometimes I listen to baroque operas, sometimes soft pop, but most of the times I wanna fire up myself so metal. I am visual kei fan (so promotion comes) and these are my favourite speed up songs:

If I want something more oldschool the X Japan and either Kurenai or Dahlia. I am biased, but Yoshiki is one of the best drummers in the world. For the best result please watch the video, the spirit in their live concerts was phenomenal! Fast part begins at 1:35:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NVEpqTTjkY

Instead of movie soundtrack I listen to Kamijo, whose voice is great. Yeah, it's very slushy-mushy (visual kei is slushy-mushy), but sometimes I have the mood for it. For the best results listen without visual input(not video, just music) in high-quality, max volume and let the overplayed vocal flow through your body.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6c3-9eFci6I

If I need ULTIMATE POWER I choose Jupiter to give me B.L.A.S.T.!:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PSY2ye_C44

These are my matchplaying songs, but they doesn't represent my musical taste, as I mostly listen these when I need an adrenaline rush.

In communist countries everything is about the country, not the individual. Collective power is always the best per Marxism. It is somewhat a tough concept to understand for folks living in free countries.

I'm kind of not in the "thing" of listening music before match, but occasionally it happens, so for me if there is a positive effect of listening music before the match it’s to relax and forget about life problems, tension, anger (because of loss in previous match or something else...), so for me it may be very different songs, the important thing that I must like it very much in that exact moment (it depends on many factors)...

I'm very big fan of composer Yoko Kanno, which mostly do soundtracks for anime, so there is a bunch of tracks of her that I can listen to make me relax and feel good, for example for now I really enjoy track "Walt" from anime "Zankyou no Terror":

Its always good to listen not only music, but your coach too.

Here is maybe the earliest composition paying attention to the coaches:

Its far from the 3rd ball attack, accents on the 8th one may be, but has a really good rally finish.
