The Qatar Open has almost the exact same line up as the recent Kuwait Open. Once again the top 5 players of the women's and men's singles have all entered the tournament. Will Zhang Jike maintain his form to capture another World Tour title this year? The Rio Olympics is fast approaching and all the best players around the world are preparing rigorously for the global event. Ma Long leads the men's singles followed closely by Fan Zhendong, Xu Xin, Zhang Jike and Dimitrij Ovtcharov. In the women's singles Liu Shiwen leads the seedings followed closely by Ding Ning, Zhu Yuling, Ai Fukuhara, and Kasumi Ishikawa. Will anyone eliminate top form Zhang Jike? Samsonov, Koki Niwa, Chuang Chih Yuan, Wong Chun Ting and Jun Mizutani are also in the mix up

A fantastic event to follow, be sure to get involved on the TTD discussions and join us in the live chat in the ITTF Live Streaming!

Patrick Franziska just won his first match. Yuya Oshima is out already after losing to Kirill Gerassimenko.
Let's see what else this day is gonna bring.

Looks like Yuya is not so steady at his performances, first sam walker now gerassimenko. He puts up good fights against the chinese but it doesnt seem weird to me that he loses from "unknown" europeans

What an upset! Here is the ITTF article about it: http://ittf.com/_front_page/ittf_full_story1.asp?ID=43626&Competition_ID=2635&

Advice from Austria
“Predominantly I served short to his forehand and then attacked the middle of the table and then his forehand”, explained Kirill Gerassimenko. “Before the match I’d been advised by Dimitrij Levenko, one of the coaches at the Werner Schlager Academy, that this was the best way to play against Yuya Oshima.”

Advice but in Qatar, as in Kuwait, Kirill Gerassimenko is alone; he has no advisor sitting courtside.

Clear Thinking
“I know that Yuya Oshima likes to play forehands whenever he can but it is when he plays his forehand from the backhand side of the table that his forehand is the strongest”, added Kirill Gerassimenko. “At 8-10 down I just said to myself keep playing and keep following the tactics.”

He did just that, he became embroiled in forehand top spin rallies and prevailed; the fact that he was able to keep thinking clearly is a measure of the mental qualities possessed by Kirill Gerassimenko.

Thinking about tactics in the heat of the battle; easier said than done!

Here is Kirill's training:

I haven't seen full match. Does ZJK lost on "purpose" to Dima because he is too cocky to fight ma long just in semis not final? :D

Oh and it seems that Mizu got back to his usual style.. and ofcourse this mean he has no chance against XX
