Players are now beginning to head to the Olympic Village in Rio. Since London 2012, the best players from all around the globe have been training and preparing intensively. Over the last few months many of the World Tours have been full with top players participating, gaining that final preparation for the ultimate event! The big question, will we see a Ma Long versus Zhang Jike final? Can London 2012 bronze medalist Dimitrij Ovtcharov go one step further and reach the final of the Rio Olympics? Germany's Timo Boll is finding peak performance having won last weeks European Test Event for the Games. Japan's Jun Mizutani comes in at number 4 seed and will be looking to go all the way. In the women's singles Ding Ning leads the seedings followed closely by Feng Tianwi and Li Xiaoxia. Its all to play for!

A fantastic event to follow, be sure to get involved on the TTD discussions!

We can use this topic as a means to display all the latest results, videos and news from this prestigious Rio Olympics! What are your predictions from each event.

I want to see my main man Samsonov take gold. Probably gonna be Ma Long, Dimitrij Ovtcharov, and I'm want to say Zhang Jike taking home medals.

Is there a way to attach the second poll with women's title? I think that the real intrigue will be there: Li Xiaoxia had recovered from injuries and Ding Ning is very strong as well, that will be a massive showdown.

The draw should be very interesting. It is quite obvious that Ma Long and ZJK cannot meet before final, but other players are very crutial. If Dima is going to be in the same half with ZJK everything can happen. I am going to say that the only trouble for Ma Long can be ZJK if he reaches the final. He already lost to Ovtcharov, Chuang, Samsonov, Fegerl and Chen chien an. So it will be really interesting how the other half will be build.

Who do you guys think is likely to win the bronze medal?

CroneOne
07-26-2016, 01:08 AM
After watching Xu Xin beat ML in the Korean open, I think that Xu would have a
serious chance at giving ML a nasty game if it came to it. Xu is in great shape. Much better than ZJK in my opinion.

What I wonder is at the Olympics, is this a time to try new
things to put your opponents off or will everyone play their normal, predictable game but try
to play it better than usual?

Takkyu_wa_inochi

No bold predictions on my side

MA Long for gold. I think ZJK will underperform in line with recent results he's much less fit than he used to be. For the other two medals it depends on the draw I think Wong Chuting and Gauzy could surprise. Mizutani seems to lack a bit off confidence. Ovtcharov Bill and Samsonov seem out of form.

Women's final should be DING Ning vs LI Xiaoxia if they're seeded 1 and 2. Ishikawa was performing badly recently but I think she'll recover in time. Intrinsically I think apart from the Chinese she's the best as FENG is getting too old. CHENG from Taipei is the rising player to watch.

Ding Ning vs LI Xiaoxia I think LI wins. Ding is stronger player overall but between those two maybe advantage to LI as she knows how to beat Ding

Takkyu_wa_inochi

Team event
China for the two gold medals. Depending on the draw, Korea could get Silver if they avoid China before. Portugal will be strong , Taipei will be there, I don't like Koki Niwa but Japan should make it

Women's I think unfortunately Japan may underperform as they have too much home media pressure. Individual results have been mediocre recently for Ishikawa and even worse for Fukuhara. Ito has too many ups and downs. All Asian teams are strong , both Korea's , china's satellites Singapore Hong Kong and Taiwan. And let me call Netherlands an Asian team as well... It's quite open

TTFrenzy

The semifinal seeds are probably ma long vs mizutani and zhang jike vs ovtcharov. Boll is on good form right now and recovered well from his injury in wtttc, he managed to beat ovtcharov to a olympic preparation tournament so I wouldnt count him out so easily. There is always vladi who can pose a threat and dont forget that dima never had a top performance (like the one in tokyo against ZJK) in any single world competition yet

In 2011 he lost to boll in 2013 to baum in 2015 to lee sang su who is also a threat for everyone. His only exquisit performances are in 2013 world cup and 2014 wtttc so it will be really exciting if dima really manages to achieve a break through in these olympics

The thing that makes me somehow uninterested & bored is that if dima beats ZJK in the semifinal, I dont think he can do the same thing in the final against ma long so the final will be one sided and boring. On the other hand europe players will start to build confidence more if they see another fellow achieving a top class performance against the chinese

The draw will be very interesting. Boll and Samsonov could definitely cause a threat. I have been thinking this recently, Dima beats Zhang Jike in semi finals and then plays Ma Long in the final. Similar to when Ryu Seung Min beat Wang Hao in the Athens Final in 2004, Dima will hit peak performance and completely buzz and his first ever victory against Ma Long will be at the Olympics. Just a dream? :)

I think LGL regrets that he chose ZJK. Now all china coaches Wonder what they can do to make ZJK go to the final. He is the only person who can beat ma long, if he reaches the final. Now I would say it is 50:50.

Hi Dan,
Look forward to the competition, but it seems like you've nicked my choices already!
Dima to beat ZJK in the semi, but, loses to ML in the final (who beats JM in the other semi).
May as well just give me the prizes now ;) !

You forgot about Chuang, Wong and Boll - they all might cause some surprise. Chuang already beat ZJK and he can beat Dima too. Boll is unpredictable, last they beat even Dima, so he can be dangerous especially to Mizutani and ZJK. Wong has a good ratio against mizutani as well.
All depends how main draw will look like.

Ardenhouse165
07-26-2016, 10:54 AM
As much as I'd love to see Boll do really well, I feel that he no longer has the staying power to go all the way. Having seen Liam Pitchford nearly beat Mizutani, I also feel that JM won't win. I'm pretty certain that Ma Long will be hitting top form, it's what their goal must be, and so he will be virtually impossible to beat over the duration, especially in the final. I'm going to say that there will be some surprises along the way, but not too many, and not to the very top ranked players.

I was told that just this chinese training center floor cost 250 thousand reais or 70 thousand euros. It was all paid by the chinese Team. Also it is located in Sport Club Pinheiros, one of the most expensive in Sao Paulo. Certainly they have the best training facilities of all delegations.

I wished that this cost was to build a new one, but this was just the cost to adapt a futsal court at the club. The chinese team asked that it remains very private, but I was told that the associates at the Sport Club could watch some of the training. The other country that I know that have their own private training room is Japan.

Zhang Jike probably versus Chen Chien-An in his first match.. Not the easiest start as their head-to-head is 4-2 and Zhang lost to him earlier this year.

Timo vs. Wang Yang could be cool if we get this :D
Mizutani vs. Gionis also very cool :)

it's like the worst draw possible for ZJK, he'll need to beat players that he had tons of trouble with in the past, Chen Chien An -> Stefen Fegerl -> Ovtcharov, all of them have defeated him recently.
Do you think the draw is arranged somehow? (in order to maximize the chance that ZJK can't reach the final, and the final will be China vs world to make it interesting)

If ZJK is actually awake and trying to play, it shouldn't matter who is on his side of the draw. I mean, think about it, those guys are not as tough as Ma Long and, ultimately, he would have to face Ma Long.

If he is actually playing for keeps, motivated and has his game face on, nobody but Ma Long has a chance. If he is not, then him losing is a good thing for the sport.

If China gets less than 2 medals it will be a big upset. And it would be refreshing to see something shake the pot a little.

It would be a great surprise/inspiration if ZJK loses to dima or vladi, maybe europe players especially the younger ones will start to have more confidence against the chinese from then on

So if he zhi wen doesnt make a huge upset, ZJK will probably face chen, lee sang su, fegerl or wong chun ting and after wards dima or vladi. Very tough draw for sure but I think it is good for him he will be forced to be alert from the very beginning.

Im not saying ma long's draw is easier but comparing their mentalities, ML always goes out guns blazing no matter the opponent so the only possibility of a surprise would be timo boll

I just cant see mizutani or chuang making an upset they seem to lose their composure and making poor decisions in close matches.

Zhang Jike has one hell of a draw!

Three players in his half of the draw have all beaten him in the past year. Many have said if Zhang Jike gets through these players he will go on to win it. Agree?

It's the perfect draw for him. He needs the pressure to excel. Just imagine having an easy peasy road forward, hardly breaking a sweat and then suddenly you're having Ma Long across from you on the other side of the table. What do you do?

? think it all boils down on how LGL and xiao zhan handled him and will handle him from now on. His spirit on wttc 2015 and 2016 was great in important matches, not a spectacular performance as in the past, but a solid one. I think he will have no problem reaching the final if he gets into the groove

ZJK tends to get bored easily. Since he already won gold last time hopefully he still has some interests in trying to win. Samsonov or Dima could beat him if he not careful. I want Ma Long to win but I also want a great final match!

dude olympics are owned by companies not ITTF. There are too many money on the stack to let someone buy it cheap, you have to buy the TV rights to broadcast, its not ITTF's fault , olympic events are a multimillion business

The olympic committee has the first call on what to do with their sports at THEIR event, not the federations

Although I cannot watch it in Germany due to "location restrictions" (need to activate Proxy) there are two live tables available here: http://www.nbcolympics.com/

Will Sportschau screen them? I am watching Rowing online.

I highly recommend trying a VPN for your smartphone / tablet. You can try for example PIA VPN and F-Secure Freedome typically for 14-30 days for free. Just select a country that shows the streams and you are set. For example Finland and the Finnish National Broadcast agency YLE shows ALL the Rio live streams via their mobile app. You should be able to download it and use via VPN without problems... except maybe the language ;)

The chinese look really strong. I've watched Ding Ning - Samara. Eliza was really good, but Ding Ning simply gave her no chance.

By the way, I'm watching the main source of noise on the stadium - Calderano vs Tang Peng. Calderano looks pretty good until now.

Shibaev 3-2 up, Boll tried to mix things up, but in the end, Shibaev prevailed due to his strong Bh placement in either the deep fh or middle of Timo. Hopefully, Timo can turn things around...

He definitely is after his injury but he plays against quadri aruna, timo is far more consistent/smarter player than CCY and he will definitely not underestimate the nigerian

p.s. aruna has great FH but his BH is mediocre, he can cover all the table with his fantastic FH but if timo pins him on the BH side I dont think he will have a problem winning the match

My match analysis:

Although Timo won, I don't think his performance was quite that impressive to be honest.
Shibaev won a LOT of points against Timo with his fast BH counter against Timo's banana flick. Also using a tactic that the chinese players like to use against Timo: attacking the middle of BH of Timo and staying there as to force Timo to turn around, giving them a much easier ball to finish the point. Timo didn't have a lot of problems with Shibaev's serve, due to his touch, but he DID have some problems with Shibaev's speed, which was greater than Timo's.

In return, Timo won a lot of points with service variations, mixing up his returns and staying close to the table, putting pressure on Shibaev's FH under pressure. Even serving over half long as to force Shibaev to engage his FH, so Timo could counter attack it close to the table with his FH. Timo lost three sets mostly because his banana flicks were too predictable/slow, especially focusing on Shi's BH and not his weaker FH.

In the decider, Timo served mostly short/ half long FH or middle of the table so Shi could not use his BH flick or be too aggressive on the return. With his reverse pendulum, he won 3-4 straight points mixing it up, which was smart indeed. Also returning his banana flicks closer to the lines on the table in a much more upward motion, giving trouble to Shibaev missing 3-4 BH's. Smart tactics of Boll there.

But the biggest issue here is Timo's speed. I really feel and notice that Timo is getting older. His movement wasn't sharp, especially to the deep FH and when turning around the BH. If he plays like this, I don't think he can give Ma Long, Zang Jike or even Dima a run for their money, although his tactics are first class, I really feel he needs to step it up in the next matches.

It is interesting, sometimes a mediocre performance like this predicts the end is near for a player like Timo. But sometimes it shakes them up and gets them in a groove to pull a match like that out when the player was down and comes back. So it could spark him to up his level. We shall see what happens with Timo.
