Firstly, I want to thank the mytt.net forum and user atin for the pictures and description used.

The Tenergy series rubbers from Butterfly are at an extremely huge price at the moment. In some cases, its hard to get one sheet for less then 45 pounds. Since this rise, there has also been a rise in 'Fake Tenergys'. What is a fake tenergy? Well atin was curious and bought some fake Chinese Tenergy 05 and 05 Fx to compare to the real thing.

He explained that the packaging looks very good and almost the exact same as the real version. All the description is the same also on the packaging. Looking at the picture below you can see the sponge colour is different. The one on the right is a real sheet of Tenergy, the one of the left is the fake Tenergy.

But lets cut this rubber to the chase. How does this rubber perform?

Atin quotes, "How does it play? Well not that great: it's definitely now a high technology rubber. It plays a bit like a slow Sriver (fake Tenergy 05) or
like a slow Sriver FX (fake tenergy 05 FX). But for many people it can be a playable rubber like other cheap rubbers."

So what do you think TTD members? Have you tried these fake tenergys?

Have your say

"it's definitely now a high technology rubber"

Is that supposed to be 'not'?

And I think if you buy from your trusted stores you don't have to worry about those, but yes you have to be careful. People try to make money off Butterfly's quality reputation.

I know someone who bought some fake Tenergy and he told me it sucked. I never felt it. I also knew they guy who sold it to him. Sort of a low life. The people manufacturing the fake Tenergy know that they can get away with it. They charge $60.00 USD (38 BP, 43 Euro) for a rubber that should cost $15.00 USD (9.5 BP, 11 Euro) and most people who do not know what they are doing will not know the difference. I guess the unfortunate thing is that, if Butterfly did not mark the price up for the rubber the way they have, if the price was still in the same range as all the other speed glue effect rubbers ($50.00 USD, 32 BP, 36 Euro) there would not be the same market of people looking to get them for a cheaper price; not to the same extent.

Here's what Butterfly says about it:

Dear Butterfly Users:

We have received some information from some of our foreign distributors that imitation Butterfly products are available in some markets. This applies in particular to the following:

Sriver L
Sriver FX
Ekrips
Tackiness Drive
Tackifire
Flextra
Butterfly 3 star balls

We are concerned that you may inadvertently buy some of these imitation products and therefore ask you to be very careful as to where you purchase your Butterfly products. Only use well established table tennis specialist shops or bonafide sports shops in order to protect yourself from this fraud.

Please be aware that we cannot be responsible for the playing performance and quality of the Butterfly products that you may buy from other players, coaches, trainers and other non-bona fide traders.

If you think you have bought some of these imitations, please contact us with your receipt of purchase and full information regarding the person or organization that you purchased the products from (name, address, telephone and fax numbers, email address etc).

They don't mention the Tenergy's... Maybe they forgot or didn't want to put it... Don't know ^^

@poltery: I would only buy one if: it's a good Sriver and if the price is lower ^^ who knows how long they last?

I know of a store, near where I live, they're selling fake Sriver Ls and Sriver ELs. The price is about 1/6th of the original price. The packaging is so low quality you would know it really can't be the genuine stuff. If I reported this to Butterfly, do you think I'll get a reward . . . . . a pair of Srivers perhaps? all wishful thinking;)

how come they also got the ITTF sign?

How come counterfeit Dollars say the same thing that real ones say? Because they copy it. They fake the ITTF approval just like they fake the Tenergy label. How come the photo of the fake Tenergy has the Butterfly symbol? Because they copied it.

Also, I would rather have real Sriver than fake Tenergy that plays like real Sriver. I believe there are a lot of fake DHS rubbers, Hurricane and Skyline in particular, out there as well.
