in Tokyo from Jan16 to Jan22
official site: http://japantabletennis.com/zennihon2017/

There are 32 seeds
There were some surprises last year, and I think (not 100% sure) that the draw is made according to last year's results and not according to the players rankings. So I'm presenting the scheduled 1/4 finals + where the other top players are

So here are the scheduled quarterfinals for men's singles

Mizutani - Ooya (but Takagiwa, Morizono ,Kenta Matsudaira are in the same block)
Morita - Yoshimura (Machi and Jin are in the same block)
Kasahara - Niwa (Oshima, Muramatsu, Ueda, Shiono in the same block)
Sakai - Chan (Kenji Matsudaira in the same block) -> this block seems less dense than the other ones...

So here are the scheduled quarterfinals for women's singles

Ishikawa - Hamamoto (Yamamoto, Misaki Morizono, Wakamiya are here)
Sato - Kyoka Kato (Doi, Tashiro are here)
Ito - Hayata (Hashimoto is here)
Matsuzawa - Hirano (Mori, Miyu Kato, Maeda, Abe are here)

Fukuhara is not playing this year. She is focusing on her new life as a housewife it seems.
She did not participate in the qualifying tournament to be a national team member, so she will miss the 2017 World Championships. Maybe her long time in the national team is already over at 28....

here are the scheduled quarterfinals for men's singles
What this means? These are the results or what? And Chan is the last block is Chan Kazuhiro?

Takkyu_wa_inochi
01-12-2017, 01:14 PM
Kazuhiro Chan yes. He was the finalist last year that is why he is at the bottom of the draw

Takkyu_wa_inochi
01-12-2017, 01:16 PM
In ITTF competitions you would typically take the best 8 ranked players as top 8 seeds so that they would fight each other in quarter finals at the earliest.
Here the seeding is based on last year's results because there is no national point ranking system

Where is Harimoto?

ajtatosmano2
01-12-2017, 02:14 PM
My anticpations:
QF:
Mizutani - Kenta (3:1/4:2)
Machi - Yoshimura (0:3/0:4)
Oshima - Ueda (3:2/4:3)
Kenji - Kazuhiro (1:3/1:4)
SF:
Mizutani - Yoshimura (3:2/4:2)
Oshima - Kazuhiro (3:0/4:1)
Final:
Mizutani - Oshima (3:0/4:2)

The Ueda, Niwa, Muramatsu, Oshima, Shiono block is really tight.

Where is Harimoto?

Last year was his first one (?) on the big stage.
He actually lost to one of my coaches, a university student called Kanbara (not qualified this year !) in the first round. It will be probably his career highlight LOL

So he is not seeded and has to fight from the bottom,
well not exactly, he is given a bye on the first round, and he would meet his first seeded player in the 4th round (round of 64), Yuki HIRANO, then MACHI, MORITA, and then YOSHIMURA (QF)

edit: apparently Yuki HIRANO is the elder brother of Miu, and a very good young player. He won the Tokyo Open beating all the big names

Hoping to see Harimoto's showdown against Yoshimura in QF. He went very close against Yoshimura in recent crash and a spot in Semi would almost guarantee his place in National Team for this year's Worlds.

I didn't knew, so I wrote both best of 7 and 5 games' anticipations.

actually I've doubled checked, the 4 first rounds are played best of 5, and from there its best of 7

So, to be more precise, in the first 3 (qualifying) rounds, there are no seeded players. In the 4th round (best 64), the 32 seeds meet 32 qualifiers. All those games are best of 5.

Then round of 32, 16, 8, QF, SF, final...are best of 7.

It's hard to locate as the web site is in Japanese. Today is the second day so click on 2 at the top then choose which ever table(up to 24) you'd like to watch. Seeded players will be playing from day four so you'll mostly see junior and doubles events until then.

An American coach recommended to play him this way. Interesting.

Takkyu_wa_inochi
01-18-2017, 12:48 PM
Basically he had difficulties to attack this serve with his FH, so he tried Chiquita many times, but success rate went down under pressure, and he was exposing himself too much.

Also, his opponent Miyamoto caught him wrong footed a few times with some long topspin receive putting the ball a few times opposite where Harimoto was waiting. a bit surprising.

Harimoto didn't have the chance to play many BH/BH rallies where he excels.

Miyamoto's one of the hardest working player in junior TT right now so really happy for him to beat Harimoto. I guess winning Japan junior natinoals is harder than winning worlds.

As for the analysis, it'd be great to see USA players in finals with their superb analystic skills and strong forehand.

Poor Harimoto was crying a long time after the match...with his father on the bench... and even in the press conference. He admitted that was his toughest defeat and that he was under too much pressure especially when the other guy got the lead.

I could certainly feel the pressure on Harimoto but that was because his opponent was playing very well.

Lets not forget Harimoto is just a kid, its not easy to play with all cameras and journalists following his every move. Last year he crashed in the first round in the open... he still playing 3rd round today...

What is the name of the bigger player that is playing now on table 3 ?

this is match no 1303, a 3rd round match. Its Men's singles Okayama vs Murai. Okayama has white shoes and the one who was smashing and Murai defending far from the table in that set

i'm watchin game 1306 on table 6, with former JNT player Kishikawa in action

Harimoto is in game 1311 on table 11. edit: apparently its already over, 3-0 for Harimoto in this 3rd round. He will face Yuki Hirano (seeded player, and recent winner of the Tokyo Open) in the next round

the Matsudaira bros both had some mental problems. Kenta was leading 3-1 to Tsuboi, Kenji had one match point in the 6th.

special "award" to Niwa who literally threw the match away after being behind 3-7 in the decider. Very disappointing.

Harimoto is not the one shouting most. Hirano shouts louder, but the loudest is Jin Takuya, he celebrates like King Kong...

the JNT slots are already fixed. Actually there is only 1 left, for the winners of the Ladies and Gentlemen's provided its not already a member, in which case, it will be a wild card...

For confirmed members Niwa and Kenta to lose early, and same Ito and Kato, its an underperformance and it doesn't bode well for the World Championships in May.

It's individuals worlds after all so it's good that they are challenged. Worried that no one's giving any stress to Mizutani though.

I never thought that this could be possible, but after having watched the match between Yoshida and Miuchi i don't think so anymore.
[Emoji2]

When I watch the highlights, I find that Harimoto's celebratory acts are more irritating. Perhaps it has to do with the tone of the player's original voice also. Yoshida's celebratory acts are quite outgoing too, but sometimes they are quite entertaining, not quite to the standard of Chen Wei Xing yet though. At the end of the match, he was going to stand on the table, but then he stopped, thought about it and then decided not to, that was another highlight for me.

That being said, the standard of these matches are so high! So many strong players coming out of (or coming back to) Japan. Hope this year's WTTC will be another amazing one.

yep it was 90% full yesterday on a weekday ! TT is getting very popular here. The All Japan Championships gather a larger crowd than the Japan Open or the World Championships. There are many more Japanese players and all their fans / club mates / parents come here as well....

I think I wrote by mistake that Yuki HIRANO that he was the elder brother of Miu HIRANO. Thats wrong.
He's the younger brother of Sayaka HIRANO, the former no1 female Japanese player who retired last year, a 5 times national champion, and Olympic medalist in London.

Kazuhiro YOSHIMURA is the younger brother of Masaharu YOSHIMURA who was an Olympic medalist in Rio, and a national champion as well.

Disgrace? I wouldn't say so. He had a big problem with serve receive, Ueda noticed it and used it in all occasions. So Niwa was very disappointed, he knew he cannot win it, so he just gave up last points.

I don't like Niwa's attitude, too. He gave up too soon too easily. Not the first time I saw him like that. Personally I don't think he should be in JNT anymore, I don't think he has the ability to make upsets nor the potential to do that. And it's not nice for spectators to see players without fighting spirit.

2nd semi : Hirano - Hashimoto 4-0

another proof that defense is powerless above some level... Sato lost the first game 14-16 only but it was downhill from here. It was even tougher for Hashimoto.

the 2 top seeds will fight like last year in the final later today. Hirano is stronger than last year, can she make it this time ?

Many defenders don't consider Filus a defender - he is an attacker who sometimes chops on backhand and uses pips in their view. And Joo has a level limitation - his teammates usually beat him easily.

Good point. But still every once in a while a good defender manages to beat some top players. When i look at guys like Wang Xi or Gionis they manage to have some good statistics in the TTBL although they certainly wouldn't play so succesful in CTTSL.

I have to agree, but then again I thought modern defense was played that way. Gionis or Wang Xi also rarely chop from the FH side and are also quite good at looping even though i have to admit that their styles are totally different to Filus' style.

Takkyu_wa_inochi

That's the problem. Every once in a while a top defender beats a good player but true top players (almost) never lose a top defender

JOO was the exception at his peak. In women's it's a bit less true. Han Ying or Wu Yang can beat any non Chinese player, but they are both Chinese...

No Yoshimura or Oshima? I would throw Niwa out I think... for 2 years his results are disappointing, but he keeps on being in the top 20, I don't know how, every tournament he loses to someone ranked way below him and never wins someone above him. He needs a wake up call

I agree they should kick Niwa. His loss to Ueda in this championship was a disgrace

unfortunately they said that the 2 best ranked players would be part of the team, so Niwa was part of it.

Niwa had a miraculous win against WONG Chuting in the Olympics in singles and that kind of saved him.

Yoshimura (Masaharu) and Oshima have disappointed a lot recently. They had very bad results recently especially after the Olympics.

I'm surprised Muramatsu is part of the team, given the limitations of his defensive style. I don't think he can get better results than he does now.
For Women's, i agree with Sato being chosen. She is really good. Defensive style works better for Women's as the topspin attacks are less powerful. Sato is very good at counterattack as well. Her footwork is impressive and her fighting spirit excellent.

I understand your point and quite agree, but ranking is ranking. Niwa sometimes looses to poorer opponents but usualy he does not have troubles in preliminary rounds. If you look carefully to his tournaments you will see that most of cases he goes quite far. Oshima is very good player, but sometimes he looses even in first round, the same happened to yoshimura last year. So in my opinion Niwa is more reliable especially in team and less risky, while oshima and yoshimura can beat better players while at the same time loose to poorer ones.

Thing about Niwa is that although his world ranking is the 2nd highest in Japan, his rating points are far below. He ranks 28th in rating points which makes him the 5th highest. Feel sorry for Yoshimura who ranks 2nd in the rating points.

Happy to see Harimoto though! Can't wait till another Harimoto hate thread coming up when the WTTC starts.

No, I don't dislike Niwa, I like to see him play when he's on fire, he'- can be very creative in his chose of shots. But I think Yoshimura and Oshima can indeed lose maybe in earlier rounds, however, they can also surprise. And for selecting a younger player, Harimoto is quite young I would say :D
