In the news "part", they give chinese and japanese line-up partially...
But not really sure...

Chinese men would be :
Ma Long , Fan Zhendong , Zhang Jike , Cui Qinglei , Lin Gaoyuan , Fang Bo , Zhou Yu

Women :
Ding Ning , Liu Shiwen , Zhu Yuling , Chen Meng , Wu Yang , Wang Manyu , Chen Ke , Chen Xingtong

Japanese men :
Kenta Matsudaira , Koki Niwa , Maharu Yoshimura , Yuya Oshima , Tomokazu Harimoto + others I think

Japanese women :
Miu Hirano , Mima Ito...

But have to wait for the complete list I guess...

Xu Xin injured?

No Mizutani? He wants to keep his form for himself maybe for the worlds and hope to beat the chinese. I think he can do it more than ever. He will get his medal

I think they don't want to show anything from Mizutani prior to WTTC.

I think they don't want to show anything from Mizutani prior to WTTC.

Could be possible, his form at the Rio olympics was absolutely amazing but his latest results were not so promising for example in switzerland.
I hope he will be able to compete on his olympics level again at wttc (only against the chinese players :P ) not seen liu guoliang this scared a long time ago since Ma Longs games against mizu and jung.

But prior to the a very interesting event.

Anybody knows if Zjk is able to compete again or still half injured like at marvellous 12 competition?

Its just.. because of my oriental diagnosis.. my guess would be:
Ma Lin, LGY, FB, Xu Xin and maybe Ma Long, but there I am absolutely not sure.. More likely not :)
Also LSW I would not say 100% that she is no smoker..
I am guessing that because they have little weak lungs meridian.. Doesnt neccessarily mean that they have to smoke.
But mostly people showing this weakness do smoke. (or did)

China won Women's Team final 3-0 against Japan

There was some suspense only for the first match HIRANO Miu vs LIU Shiwen. Miu got a really bad start and lost the first set 3-11 but she was down in the 2nd didn't panic and finished strongly to get it 11-9. The 3rd set was hard fought but Miu just lacked a bit of luck and an extra level of consistency during those long rallies to win. In the 4th she was ahead 8-5 missed a few shots, and then there was this block from LIU Shiwen which became an edge ball, that was the turning point. LSW got the fourth 11-9 to win the match. There is a lot to regret in this match.

ITO was no match at all for DING Ning. Her agressive game with little spin and flat shots is too risky against the ball quality of DING Ning whose balls are really low and spinny. ITO's latest performances in ITTF or domestic competitions are not great and I don't think she will be in the Olympic team in 2020. There are many other promising young players, HAYATA, but also other teenagers some of whose name you may not heard of yet (like KIHARA) who may explode in level in the next 2 years.

HAYATA grabbed a set from ZHU but it was more a matter of ZHU falling asleep than anything else. No one really believed in a surprise at 1 set all.

On the men's side, JAPAN lost 3 nil to KOREA. Korea wasn't even playing with its best player JUNG Yungsik (injured ?)
Oshima wasn't playing after his disastrous performance yesterday against India. Niwa and Kenta both lost 1-3. and Yoshimura lost 0-3 to the surprise Korean player. the Japanese all had better ITTF rankings than their counterparts so on paper its a huge counterperformance

However its not really surprising to me. MATSUDAIRA Kenta has improved in the last year and i am disappointed by his result. But NIWA, OSHIMA and YOSHIMURA had really bad results both in ITTF and domestic competitions recently and i felt their rankings were inadequate. I think the result is quite normal.

But what about Achanta in his first match aganinst Koki? 12:10 in the decider?! So it was really close to an upset for Japan! Fantastic match from India :D

There were many deuce opportunities in matches 2 and 3 that could have won the match for India assuming the oshima results stayed the same. Some people aren't looking at the scores before writing their thoughts.

They train in death camps. Only the best survive to see the light of day. LOL. On a serious note my south korean friends suspect they do exchange some training with chinese provincial players and coaches but nowhere near CNT. You also have to note that ZJK is not 100% and weakest link in CNT at this point. Nobody can touch ML and FZD

CCTV live broadcast schedule for Men's Team Final is Apr 10 (Wed, Beijing Time) 14:00-17:25. I don't think the line-up will be submitted until 1 hour or so before the match.
Jung Yung Sik seems to have some wrist injury and may not play. I guess Ma Long and Fan Zhendong will play. Not sure who will be the third for China, Zhang Jike or Xu Xin.

Edit: The final is on Apr 12 Wed :P

Great play! If you guys have a chance, look at the pure joy on her face!
On a side note, it is very interesting to compare these 2 players. As I notice more frustration and negative expression from Ding Ning (and sometimes no apologies when netting bals) while Hirano show a more positive facial expression and more free to express happiness when taking sets.

Seismic events rocking the asian meet. Ma Long then Ding Ning shown the door !!! Koreans and Japs are stepping it up.

MA Long just proved he is human. JEONG Sangeun was ranked only #102 (but was a Junior World Champion in 2007). I feel it was more about MA Long not being at his level though.

In the Mixed Doubles, a spirited Japanese pair edged the #1 seeded Chinese pair (FANG Bo/ WANG Manyu) and gave a good fight to the #2 Chinese pair in the finals. They lost but the Chinese didn't seem invincible.

but HIRANO won with very high class this epic match against DING Ning and outclassed her in the end in front of the Chinese crowd.

In sports the mental aspect is very important and if the Chinese opponents take some courage of recent events, fear will start to change sides, and we will see more and more defeats for the Chinese.

After all, the WTTC might be much more open than one thinks. Its happening far from the Chinese home and that will provide extra pressure to the Chinese.

Sali

yes everything is possible. Ding ning and Ma long won almost everything they could in their carrier so I think they are mentally tired and do not have so much motivation as youngsters. FZD now is definitely impossible to beat by any foreigner, he is eager to win big title, he is already 20 years old and wait for the first big success. Are you joking or taking what LGL said literally? If you are joking, I get it. If you are serious, you really don't understand the point of LGL's message which was that XX has to step up his game if LGY can take the place ahead of XX (though if you watched the trials, you will see that LGY barely did it, but standing still is the same as getting worse in the world of competition). LGL really did not expect any of the upcoming players to beat his established players, so his point was that with the upcoming players getting hungrier and XX still behind the top 3, if XX falls out of the top 4, which was possible with LGY's victory, XX's career is pretty much done. So he had better find his way into the top 3 or retire soon, because there was really no point in someone like him playing till 2020 just to be a bystander. But with 5 spots, none of the upcoming players was going to take away a spot from the top 4 without earning it, and LGY made sure that the Fang Bo's and Liang Jingkun's and Zhou Yu's did not take a coach's choice spot.

Right now, the hope is that Ma Lin can work some magic into XX's game and maybe extend his top-level career a little.

I think both of them made a lot of unforced errors but you have to commend Miu Hirano on sticking to her strategy , she played really well in the crunch and I was very impressed with her ball placement in the rallies and her serve receive.
She was able to put the ball in uncomfortable positions for Ding Ning with power and spin and thats how she won !

If it was best of 7 , of course Ding Ning would have been able to adjust more and may be would have come back , shorter formats always favor underdogs . But I liked how she showed a lot of positive intent and body language, it was really refreshing to see that she does not hide her emotions , especially the positive ones ...

Yeah, but Ding Ning had multiple occasions on which she could have won the match. She had a 4 point lead in a deciding game. Miu Hirano won all her games at Deuce. Hirano played well, and can play better, but I think people are reading way too much into this. Ding Ning did a bit of a choke job, no matter what credit you give to Hirano.

I think overall the new generation of Miu and Mima ito are not psyched out when they face Chinese players , may be because of their age they are comparatively fearless in executing their game plan , win or lose ... its just not fair that Mima Ito limitations because of pips are already starting to catch up with her ... the initial surprise factor is gone and its going the Ai Fukuhara way ...

I agree with NL there is not much to read into this , yes Ding Ning did choke but I am happy the newere generation of Japanese players are atleast willing to compete with them to the last and not mentally giving up even before they enter the arena , of late thats been the feeling I get when I say Kasumi Isikawa play any of the CNT players ..

I was joking somewhat, twisting what LGL said. My assessment of LGL's message is the same as yours.

I also dissagree with LGL's assessment of XX's "lack of forehand" in a sense. His attacks haven't become more lax, nor has his forearm strength deminished. I wouldn't be surprised if he is working harder than ever before. The obvious issue here to me is the new ball and his outdated equipment from the celluloid days. Even ML switched blades, and the resulting improvment from said switch was clearly visible (to me atleast).

The problem is XX's killshots are being returned and it is practically impossible for him to catch up to them. XX's style IMHO is a very risk oriented, do-or-die sniper oriented, leveraging the penhold grip to make his forehand spins deadlier and neigh un-returnable. The new ball somewhat takes away his heat, but I'm beginning to think its because of his light, all wood blade that is slowing him down.

Just like ML, it is time to step up to an actual carbon blade (NCT doesn't count!), and it is time for DHS to provide the next stage of national rubbers to help XX gain back his sizzle.

I managed to see the last set of ZHU YL vs HIRANO. The Japanese won in straight sets. Another huge performance !!!
The Chinese look totally lost. Even when she was attacking, HIRANO managed to counterattack or make deadly blocks ... Her coach looked utterly disgusted and looked like he didn't believe in his player anymore before the end of the game.

I believe LGL would cheer his player till the end...

Now can HIRANO make the impossible possible , beating a 3rd Chinese player in a row in the final to clinch the Championship ?

Are we witnessing the beginning of the end for CNT dominance ? Atleast in Women's, I dont see any one to compete against Hirano in 2-3 years time !!! For Men, FZD will still carry the CNT flag high but no top 4 for CNT in Mens for sure in the near future as well.

I agree with you. China will always have a lot of talent, but exceptional talent came from many players at the same time. it will not always be the case.

Zhu Yuling has not been herself for way too long.
yes, given how HIRANO played against LIU Shiwen (teams) or DING Ning yesterday, and how ZHU has been performing lately, its hardly a surprise that HIRANO could win this one. Still a straight sets win against the Chinese is always impressive.

CHEN Meng has performed well recently, in the trials she came out just behind DING Ning and LIU Shiwen, (tied with MU Zi ?) and now she beats LIU Shiwen, she will be a tougher opponent for HIRANO.

The mental aspect in sports is very important. 1 year ago DJOKOVIC looked unbeatable. 1 week ago, Chinese looked unbeatable, and HIRANO just won 2 in a row. Fear and confidence maybe has changed sides ? I believe HIRANO can accomplish the impossible. Another straight sets victory would be just HUGE.

Winning big titles are about peaking at the right time , may be the chinese team will peak at the world championships. I will be very happy if we see a change at the top , however, knowing the dominance they have shown in the past , lets wait till the end of the world championships before we start celebrating .. all the power to Hirano and Niwa and all the other japanese and korean talent, hoping with fingers crossed ..

Obviously. Ma Long has said as much. See here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzgr2yT3ERU

They need more time to adjust to it, and they had a significant advantage with the old ball in terms of manufacturing and quality for their team to use. That ball was really terrible and they practiced the most with it by far.

ZJK will take on Lin Gaoyuan at 20:00 China time tonight. Too bad the remaining 3 Chinese players has to cancel each other out before final. The step down of LGL does have its psychological impact and wrong timing on the whole team. So far China still took the Team and XD championship. Will see if they can keep the rest.

Looks like there is no chemistry between XX and Ma Lin's coaching. The unfamiliarity of the Nittaku Premium plus the matches with best of 5 all contributed to more upsets. XX said in the after match interview that he was playing badly seeing he is the only Chinese in his half and pressure is high on him. He failed to take game 1 and 3 after leading is the main reason of the loss.

Miu is really becoming a great contender to be world champion/grand slam.
since 2 ago, I eyed her as the future Japanese number 1, even though Ito was the more higher ranked/popular one.
Miu's game is more allround/complete and with her development in Age and Strength, she can only get better.

Imo, her speed has improved a lot since I saw her in December.
Really humble young lady with lots of ambition and trains really hard.
I guess having Japanese national olympic committee giving you millions a year does help too,

Not surprise when Japan gets lots of medals at Tokyo 2020 - this is for all sporting codes.

I sometimes don't feel CNT as a team treats Asian Champs with high priority.

World tournaments, they will conduct close training and prepare mentally for "each" opponent.
But come Asian champs, we always see the mens loosing unexpectedly...

Does that mean, if CNT doesn't do close training, they are vulnerable to be beaten....

This Asian champ is a shocker for me, for both mens and womens single result

I felt for the Olympics HIRANO should have taken the place of FUKUHARA who had very bad results. Well FUKUHARA was close to getting a medal; her tournament was actually better than i expected. In the team event, she lost to HAN Ying, but she's a strong opponent and FUKUHARA has always been bad against choppers. In Singles, she really had no chance against LI Xiaoxia, but in the Bronze medal match, she lost again to the (unseeded PRK) chopper...

ITO's game is a bit like FUKUHARA, she is relying on her fast BH blocks and flat attacks. It can be spectacular but its very risky, especially when against spinny and low balls... There is no margin for error. ITO has lost against many 2-tier players in ITTF open, she was also knocked down early in the national championships, her results are not very good and you can see that she doesn't feel very confident at the table when things don't turn immediately on her favour.

HIRANO is playing a more classic game, she developped a really deadly BH, but now her FH is really really fast as well. She's also really trying to impose her pace and tactics. She almost always serve from the same position; takes the advantage in the BH diagonal then finishes with FH etc...

The final will be very interesting, CHEN Meng is also strong from the FH, i think her tactics are a bit similar to HIRANO. I think the final will be to the player with the stronger mind. The level i believe is quite similar. HIRANO has the momentum, i believe and hope she can make it to clinch the title

I don't think that china doesn't treats Asian Champs with high priority. They sent all of their big guns. I feel that they didn't do 'special preparations' and at the same time coaches expected them to win every single match (against foreigners). This put the players under high pressure and they lost their confidence.

How can he screw up teams he didn't even coach? The ladies coaching team is basically the same. The men won the team event. The women won the team event. In the singles, it was all Miu Hirano. For the men's Ma Long lost despite having his usual coach. Xu Xin lost with a new coach, but with the exact same issues that LGL spoke about but all made worse by the fact that the new ball is actually consistent and doesn't deform, making it harder to spin into people and force errors.

Can't blame LGL for this one or for ZJK playing seriously when he didn't need to. For all we know he might be so injured now he can't play tomorrow or in May:p.

I dont care if they CNT wasnt "familiar" (they knew very well which ball they were going to play with before the tour) with the nittaku ball and certainly its not a deciding factor when you lose 3-0 and 3-1 from players that are "supposed" to be a level or two below you.

I tried to loop and the service went down quicker than expected because of the lack of spin ... there is definitely a difference ...

But they were using the Nittaku ball not the DHS D40+ ball. So they can't complain. The spin is less on all ABS balls. But I personally can spin the D40+ comfortably and have no complaints about it. People still miss my serves etc.

Yes, but I think they point they are trying to make that they were preparing with the DHS D40+ balls in their training and hence using Nittaku is a change for htem ... I am not sure but atleast thats what appears to be the claim Xu xin and Ma Long has made in their interviews ...

Agreed you can still spin the D40+ ball , again with increasing skill set and touch the adaptability will be higher but I am speaking in general when comparing the two balls Nitakku spins more which would be an advantage to spin oriented players say Zhang Jike compared to more speed oriented players who play flatter strokes . Also for some changes get into their head more than others , case in point , my regular partner's game was complete messed day before yesterday when we played with the DHS balls but appeared to go back to normal when we switched back to Nittaku ...

But they were using the Nittaku ball not the DHS D40+ ball. So they can't complain. The spin is less on all ABS balls. But I personally can spin the D40+ comfortably and have no complaints about it. People still miss my serves etc.

No, they are comparing the ball to the old cellulose acetate ball. China built a whole practice venue for their team in Rio, do you think they would skimp on the cost of ordering only 3* NP40+ balls for training?

They are complaining that their spins and strokes don't draw errors like they used to with the old crappy ball. Laistrogian airs my thoughts perfectly, I prefer the consistency of the ball to any stupid spin they got with their tacky rubbers and boosting. Those eggs should never have been used and I hate to say it but Ma Long was an egg ball champion.

Look at how Niwa blocked down and countered Xu Xin, Xu Xin will blame the spin but it really comes down to consistent behavior of the ball so you can understand what your stroke does and what the opponent's stroke is doing.
