Chinese National Championships has began! :) 5th - 13th October 2011

The Chinese National Table Tennis Championships is the largest event before the London 2012 games. We can use this thread as a means for all the latest results, news and videos from this spectacular.

The championship is in full scale with 32 teams and 385 players. The tournament is divided into seven events including Men and Women Singles, Men and Women Doubles, Mixed Doubles, and Men and Women Teams.

If anyone knows a livestream, feel free to post it here ;) I guess it will be another epic fight with all the Chinese players without injuries. Can someone stop Ma Long's winning streak? xD Would be unbelievable if he won this too.

So who do you think will win?

Hard to say who will take the crown this year...
It won't be Wang Hao or Wang Liqin, I'm confident. Probably not Chen Qi either.
Xu Xin has an outside chance, and Ma Lin is unpredictable.
If Hao Shuai plays like he did at Austrian Open, he may cause some upsets, but I still can't imagine him winning the whole thing.
Ma Long's had a short and impressive winning streak, however these streaks don't usually last. Although I believe he's the best player in the world, he may not be able to win this time.
Yan An is not listed in the top 8, but I believe he will reach the quarterfinals, and is capable of causing an upset against any opponent.
So, the winner in my view will be either Zhang Jike or Yan An.

Wouldn't bet on it though, got to love Chinese champs ;)

Ma Long and Ding Ning are my votes, I would usually go with ZJK but Ma Long's form atm is just too good to count him out of the title.

ma long...inconstant...
wang liqin... my idol but...this isn't a good moment for him
ma lin... unpredictable
wang hao... similar to WL... this isn't a good moment for him
xuxin, chen qi, hao shuai...definitely NO
Yan an... perhaps could be a sorprise but no enough to win
so... zhang jike is the more regular... son i think that must be the more optioned

Thanks for updating/completing the thread Dan (assuming it was u :D). Good to see the photo of the winner there ;) Let's hope someone will find a stream. I can't imagine anyone else than Ma Long or Zhang Jike winning it at the moment. But as always, anything is possible.

I think it will be a battle between ML and ZJ too and hope it will be the better ending for Ma Long :D
But Wang Hao can reach his top level very fast, that is incredible. Watch chinese trials and then WTTC. It's like you are watching another player ....:P
Ma Lin is really unpredictable but if he will meet Zhang it's game over for him

@chalo_sterling ML inconstant? that is a joke, isn't it?

Atm i would guess on Ma Long or ZJK but it would be interesting if someone has the inner-chinese statistics? There are always some guys which are quit good head to head with their teammates but not as good when playing international..

Of course anything can happen and any the top players on the Chinese team can beat any other player on a given day. But it does look to me like Ma Long and Zhang Jike seem to be the front runners. Zhang Jike somehow seems to dig deep for the bigger tournaments. But I also agree that Yan An is playing great and has potential to surprise some people.

Well, I just read this article:

http://tabletennista.com/2011/10/2011-chinese-national-championships-ms-qua/

And according to that, the semifinals are set. They will be:

Ma Long vs Zhang Jike
Ma Lin vs Wang Hao

Quarterfinal results:
Zhang Jike took care of Chen Chi
Ma Lin won against Wang Liqin in a match that went the 7 game distance.
Wang Hao took out Yan An
and
Ma Long won against Li Ping

Xu Xin and Hao Shuai got nocked out before the quarterfinals.

And if someone is interested into womens, these are semifinal battles:
Li Xiaoxia versus Liu Shiwen

The opening set of the match didn't have the usual lead of the higher seed. Surprisingly this morning, Li Xiaoxia was in a very poor condition in the match while Liu Shiwen literally dominated the score board. At the end, Liu Shiwen nailed a wonderful 11-1 in the first set.

In the second set, Li Xiaoxia continued to commit errors which allowed Liu Shiwen to maintain her advantage in 4-1. Unlike in the previous set, Li Xiaoxia played better and scored more points. However, it was still Liu Shiwen's game as she ended it with 11-6 then added another win with 11-7, leading her to a big 3-0 lead.

In the fourth set, Li Xiaoxia was in so much pressure as she was already hanging on a thread. Indeed, Li Xiaoxia showed a better performance but Liu Shiwen didn't lose her stability and still made her presence felt. As a result, both players were tied in 9-9,then in 10-10. After the tie, Liu Shiwen achieved match point in 11-10 however Li Xiaoxia didn't allow the match to end so soon.

Both players continued to fight strong and leveled in 12-12, 13-13, amd 14-14. Just as Liu Shiwen found her opportunity, she immediately went to the finish line with 16-14, sealing her place in the finals.

Ding Ning versus Guo Yan

The veteran Guo Yan started the match on the right track and nailed the first two sets with 12-10 and 11-5. However, as Guo Yan was having her momentum, Ding Ning slowly worked out her way back into the match.

Ding Ning nailed the next two sets with 11-5 and 11-8 leading her to level in 2-2. At this point, Guo Yan was already having a hard time gaining back her position in the match. After two sets, Ding Ning earned her ticket into the finals with 11-4 and 11-4.

And I have to add men singles semifinals:

Ma Lin versus Wang Hao

Wang Hao opened the match with a 4-1 lead but Ma Lin recovered quickly and leveled in 7-7. After the tie,Wang Hao found his opportunity and scored three straight points leading to 10-7. However, Wang Hao didn't go straight to the finish line as he allowed Ma Lin to catch up in 9-10. Eventually Ma Lin lost his advantage as Wang Hao overtook and nailed the first set with 11-9.

Both players started the second set with a tie in 2-2 then 5-5. After the tie, Wang Hao committed three consecutive mistakes which earned Ma Lin his lead in 8-5. At this point, the veteran held on to his advantage and maintained the control. Indeed, Ma Lin successfully leveled in 1-1 with an 11-7 score.

After winning the second set, Ma Lin found his momentum and carried out another win in the match with 11-8, leading to 2-1. Just as Ma Lin continued to show great momentum, Wang Hao went back into the fourth set and started it with a 3-1 lead. Wang Hao didn't just start with the right foot but showed dominance in the game. Wang Hao posted his biggest lead in the match with 9-3. At this point, Ma Lin failed to recover and gave the opportunity to Wang Hao with an impressive 11-4.

In the fifth set, Ma Lin posted a decent lead of 7-4 but Wang Hao caught up and leveled in 9-9. In a critical point in the match, it was Ma Lin who had the control and scored two more points leading to 11-9. As the Olympic champion only needed one more set to victory, Wang Hao opened the sixth set with a 4-1 lead. However, this match was one of the matches were Ma Lin showed his magic. The veteran overtook to 6-5 then increased his lead further to 9-6. At this point, Wang Hao failed to recover as Ma Lin went straight to victory with 11-6.

Zhang Jike versus Ma Long

This match was actually the third consecutive encounter of Ma Long and Zhang Jike. In the previous two meetings, Ma Long was the victor as Zhang Jike continues to be having a hard time against his nemesis.

As expected, Ma Long ushered the match with a lot of power. He completely dominated the round with 4-0, then 8-1. Eventually, Ma Long nailed the first set with an impressive 11-5. In the second set, Ma Long continued to stay strong while Zhang Jike only scored three points. Ma Long now led in 2-0 with 11-3.

While Ma Long was looking great in the battle, the new world champion Zhang Jike managed to find his own opportunities and used it very well to his advantage. Zhang Jike returned into the third set better and reversed the fate in 9-4. Ma Long scored two more points before Zhang Jike sealed the set with 11-6. After his victory, Zhang Jike maintained his stability and scored another point with 11-9.

After two more sets, both players were tied in 3-3 with Ma Long scoring 11-6 in the fifth set and Zhang Jike earning 11-9 in the sixth game. In the deciding set, Zhang Jike led in 3-0 with Ma Long expectedly catching up in 4-4. After several exchange of attacks, both players were tied in 9-9, then in 10-10. At the end, the match produced the usual result of Ma Long being the victor with 12-10.

Awesome!

So the final will be Ma Lin vs. Ma Long!!!

Liu Shiwen is the new Chinese National Champion

Ding Ning had the first advantage in the match as she nailed the opening set with 11-9. In the second set, Liu Shiwen returned the favor in 10-5. Ding Ning tried to recover and scored two more points but came too late as Liu Shiwen ended the set with 11-7.

At this point, both players were leveled in 1-1. In the third game, Liu Shiwen once again surprised evreyone as she dominated the score boards. She nailed an impressive 9-0 advantage. As expected, Ding Ning failed to recover and gave the second point to Liu Shiwen in 2-11.

After a devastating defeat for Ding Ning, she was expected to come back into the match rather stronger. However, the defending champion showed otherwise. Liu Shiwen continued to control the match and led in 8-4. Ding Ning scored one more point before Liu Shiwen reached match point advantage in 10-5. Immediately, Liu Shiwen ended the set and scored her third point with 11-5.

Clearly, the new world champion and the defending title holder Ding Ning was not in her excellent form and had a hard time finding her rhythm. On the other hand, Liu Shiwen led in 4-2 and got much better as the match progressed. At the end, Liu Shiwen sealed her victory with 11-4 and became the next champion in the Women Singles.

Ma Long is the new Chinese National Men Champion
Like in any match, Ma Long immediately posted his lead in the match with 3-0 then increased it further to 5-1. As expected Ma Long nailed the first set with 11-6.

Ma Lin came back in the second set better and leveled in 3-3. After the tie, Ma Lin found his rhythm and led in 7-5. Along with this, the veteran played much stronger and led him to 11-7, levelling in 1-1. In the third set, Ma Long didn't take any chances and scored 11-9.

After posting his 2-1 lead, Ma Long increased his confidence and momentum while Ma Lin showed signs of struggle. Indeed, Ma Long posted a commanding lead of 8-3. At this point, Ma Lin wasn't able to recover as Ma Long scored his third point with an impressive 11-3.

In the fifth set, just as Ma Long only needed one more game to victory, the veteran Ma Lin showed extreme composure and continued to fight. Both players were tied in 5-5, and 6-6. After the tie, Ma Long scored one more point which led Ma Lin to call for a timeout. However, instead of breaking the confidence of Ma Long, the player reached match point in 10-7. At this point, Ma Lin managed to catch up and scored two straight points, narrowing the deficit to 9-10. Now, it was Ma Long's turn to call for a timeout. Indeed, his decision proved right as he ended the match with 11-9, sealing his fourth consecutive title in Jiangsu as the Men Singles champion.

Hmmmm I think Ma Long has pretty much always had a mental advantage against ZJK. If you watch the video ZJK reportage, on youtube, ZJK basically says straight out, Ma Long is a horrible match up for him, with him losing like more than 75% of the time to Ma Long when they play each other. There really are pretty few instances where ZJK has beaten Ma Long. If anything, they games are closer now than they have been 3-4 years ago.

Yes in the matches they play against each other Zhang has the large number of losses against Ma Long in his head against him, and for Ma Long it works vice versa. But till some months ago Ma Long didn't usually show great mental strength in other matches as well I believe.

Yes .. there is no doubt Ma Long has the mental edge over Zhang Jike .. but otherwise do you guys think anything technically or strategically that Ma Long does better than Zhang Jike .. of course Zhang is more back hand oriented and Ma is more Forehand oriented .. is it because Ma has better transition and is more stable or consistent when you consider overall game structure ... would love to hear more on this from fellow tabletennisdaily members ...

yeah I would say fluidity is one of the largest differences between their game. No one is more fluid, with better transition between backhand and forehand than Ma Long. His whole game revolves around that, and as the world's best counter looper, he just has so much experience dealing with mid range looping battles, every time the point got past the first like 4-5 hits, Ma Long's chances of winning the point go from maybe 50-50 to 70-30. That makes a huge difference between the two of them once the game drags on. There is also the fact that, like you said, ZJK favors the backhand, while Ma Long the forehand. ZJK's backhand is amazing and might be the best backhand atm among top players, but forehand still just has more power, more utility etc. Ma Long's foot work and instinct revolve around trying to find an opportunity to move over to the forehand, while ZJK's playstyle doesn't really do that. He really has two very distinct positions, one for his back hand and one for his forehand, while Ma Long's backhand and forehand kind of flow together and he can transition between the two better than just about anyone.
