Because the World Cup always includes at least one player from each Continental region. Hence one North American, one South American, and one from Australia/Oceania and in this case two from Africa (who are actually good players). The tournament has always been set up that way.

Kanak Jha won the North American Cup as David Powell won the Oceania Cup as Tsuboi won the Latin American Cup as Aruna won the African Cup. Harimoto did not play the Asian Cup where Mizutani and Niwa played and while he could have gotten a special invite, I suspect the Belgians gave that to Nuytinck.

He got the ITTF's wildcard. I was probably thinking about the host's selection. But it is interesting that the ITTF went that route - I guess the country limits may have played a factor.

Why lgy not fzd?can anyone please explain
Because LGY won the Asian Cup, which is the continental qualifier. Since China already had the World Champion, the only way FZD goes is if Ma Long withdraws. He is the automatic replacement if that happens since he came second in the Asian Cup.

Hi Everyone,

I will be in the Training Hall from Wednesday to Sunday with my 3 caméras to record as much as possible (Training Session, Backstage). I will try to do the same as I did at the Legends Tour 2016 with higher quality.

I Think that the final will be Ma Long vs LGY.

World cup term is misleading in my opinion. ITTF world tour events are much tougher to win as far as lineup is concerned. They should rename this to inter-continental cup or something. "World" should be used only for world champs.

Difficult to see someone else than MA Long or LIN Gaoyuan win... but its always more open than Olympics or World Championships. Because its not so important, MA Long is perhaps not as well prepared physically and mentally this time. However the young LIN must be very hungry for victory but he might face too much pressure. Its gonna be tough for him.

BUT, I'm voting for Timo BOLL !!! too bad SAMSONOV could not make it this time

You could say the same for the Olympics so such arguments are really pointless. World Cups are on an average basis tougher to win that ITTF tournaments. Let's not let the whole national team dominance issue warp this. We have Grand tour finals and WTTC champs for that.

Depends on whether there is a rule in the draw that places them on opposite sides if they both win their groups. There often is in ITTF events that limit countries to two participants.

World Cup has new playing system now. Top 8 seeds do not play group and there is NO separation by association. ML is #1 seed and LGY #6. It is possible that they meet before final.

I saw another seed, LGY is going to play the qualification group..
Or am I mistaken?

If so, he can even hit ML in round 1, if he ends up 2nd in the group..

EDIT:
Aha.. I found the mistake..
I was referring to the first post of this topic:

Men's Singles Seeds

01) Ma Long
02) Dimitrij Ovtcharov
03) Jun Mizutani
04) Timo Boll
05) Koki Niwa
06) Lee Sangsu
07) Chuang Chih Yuan
08) Simon Gauzy
09) Marcos Freitas
10) Kou Lei
11) Quadri Aruna
12) Lin Gaoyuan

15) Jeong Sangeun
16) Chen Chien-An
17) Cedric Nuytinck
18) Gustavo Tsuboi
19) Kanak Jha
20) David Powell

But according to the official seeding list:
https://d3mjm6zw6cr45s.cloudfront.net/2017/10/2017_MWC_SEEDING_list_FINAL.pdf

it is different..
1. Ma Long
2. Ovtcharov Dimitrij
3. Boll Timo
4. Mizutani Jun
5. Niwa Koki
6. Lin Gaoyuan
7. Gauzy Simon
8. Chuang Chih-Yuan..

So those are seeded, rest is in groups..
So Lin can mee t ML in quarters, not before that..

The players Dima needs to beat are the ones he didn't/doesn't play at the T2 APAC and ECL. This has been largely the case at many tournaments for years now, only obscured by a few choke jobs at Olympics and WTTCs.

Ok, my tips:
A: 1.Lee Sangsu 2.Quadri
B: 1.Freitas 2.Kou Lei
C: 1.Shibaev 2.Assar
D: 1.CCA 2. Jeong Sangeun
But these are somewhat the expected results. Omar Assar played very well recently, he can make an upset. I root for Aruna, but seems a bad matchup against LSS. Jeong Sangeun has good capabilities and CCA is a mystery for me: I would say he is one of the most controlled attacking player among the pros, tries to play consistently, but his results are very unpredictable. But I think he stands high pressure better than Jeong Sangeun.
Do you expect any upsets?

Kanak Jha can upset Quadri. Kanak is technically sound but lacks power. If he can exploit Quadri's weaknesses we can have a good match.

Still he twice managed to win a match where he looked like he is going to lose!
Maybe he was just warming up ;)

For me Freitas has quite a chance against Lin.
He has a great FH and also a great BH, so they are as good as even to me.
Okay, Lin beat FZD, but they know each other so well.

Ma Long and Niwa Koki did what they had to (ML beat Omar 4-1 and NK beat LSS 4-2). Niwa called time-out when he lead 10-6 in the final set. It was a wise decision, still ended up 11-9.

Wait, how many points did Timo just win in a row? What a demoralizing start for Tsuboi...

Why did I see that coming? Timo from 4-10 to 12-10. IT wasn't demoralizing = the difference in class is too obvious and Tsuboi couldn't win a point when he had to come up with a play to do so.

sanavasaraja
10-21-2017, 11:12 AM
Eh, his body languages tells us otherwise... ;)

NextLevel
10-21-2017, 11:15 AM
Gustavo's body language is that of someone who ended up realizing that he can't win a point if he is trying to do so and that he just has to play and enjoy the match. Timo has also realized he can win whenever he (Timo) raises his quality and has gotten lazy as well.

sanavasaraja
10-21-2017, 11:21 AM
And here I was, thinking that Tsuboi probably knew before hand that Mr. Boll is a few leagues above him. Timo probably knew beforehand that he is going to win this if nothing drastic happens. They probably have a better idea about these things than both of us. But maybe that was just me.

He led by a lot, however that has come about, then lost a vast amount of points in a row. That is always demoralizing. Hence the tormented looking face, the hanging shoulders, the slow walking.
Why does this always have to be so difficult :(

LGY is himself to blame. He played super aggresive and focused to go 10-4 and then all of a sudden he lets his guard down. 3 more points to Boll and LGY forgets how to receive a serve out of nerves. With LGL gone, the CNT new comers seem to lack on mental toughness. Having someone like LGL in the coaching corner would have definitely made the difference for LGY today.

A bit of context:

Ovtcharov and Shibaev played each other not so long ago, maybe it was the Europe Top 16 this year. At some point during that match Dima declared that a ball was broken, gave it to the umpire and took a new ball. Shiba asked (in Russian) "what happened?", and than complained to Dima that he didn't even show him the broken ball. Dima then turned to te umpire and said (in English) "He (Shibaev) is talking to me, I don't know why". In general, even before that incident Shibaev was behaving like he so often does and Dima was understandably annoyed.

And just now Dima gave another broken ball to the umpire and Shibaev asked the umpire to let him see that it was really broken. No love lost there.

TLDR: Shibaev is a good player but he is kind of a dick and almost everyone hates him.

Its good etiquette to show the opponent the ball - whether you like him/her or not. Shibaev is no angel, agreed - but Dima's behaviour showed lack of class too. He would have been the bigger man had he done the right thing.

As for Shibaev, well, he is such a prick!
He only showed how kind of an ass he is..
So many things.. this was such and psycho war I have never seen before!
I think if he would have won, he would be the most hated semifinalist ever.
What he deployed was not as much about table tennis as about mental war.
I mean - his play was pretty good.. but.. that is not a good behaviour..
I loved when he got that yellow and red and yellow card..
I also loved when he was forbiden to wipe the sweat with the towell, when he was told to use his hand, that was amazing!
But - hey, Shibaev, this is how you cope with the best in the world?
You turn the game into something else when you see you cant beat him in table tennis?

Yuck, yuck and once again, yuck..
Dima is very very strong mentally..

Very bad for him he played so late and after the match he had to go to the doping control..
I hope he will be fresh for the final day..

My wild prediction - All german final. Dima lifts the cup. Beginning of the end of chinese domination.

I don’t think so. At some level, it’s highly important for Ma Long to win.

He is untouchable while on top, but I don’t think the loss of face China was perceived to suffer when Dima took the China Open title in an all-foreign final after the CNT top 3 forfeited has been forgotten. The one thing between punishment and stay of execution is to stay top dog.

That’s pressure there, especially with his birthday serving to remind that he’s getting to be old for a CNT #1. You may well call these pressures strong motivation.

So I think we will see a highly focused and razorsharp dragon in action today. Should Timo overcome, that would be quite a feat — and maybe also the onset of Ma Long’s retirement, probably followed promptly by a quick and sharp fall from grace.

He deserves better, much better, but history doesn’t quite smell like roses in these matters.

The CNT looks like a basket case at the moment and ML looked wobbly under pressure, but Timo played some of the best stuff I've ever seen him play to apply that pressure so I'm not going to second guess it. Some of his backhands were so good it's hard to put into words.

I don't think MA Long was injured but he wasn't at his best, especially mentally. In the 6th and 7th he made unusual mistakes. I think he's always been quite afraid of Boll, even at the WTTC2017 he had some luck to make it easier to close it 4-2. This time Boll had a lot of unreal reaction shots and that affected MA Long's confidence.

Come on Timo !!!! it would be a pity if he doesn't win this tournament after winning against the 2 Chinese

Take that back, Timo has done it ;)

Agreed that he could withdraw beforehand but the news said the decision of his attendance was made to promote table tennis sport. Not sure what it really meant and who pushed the decision, ML himself, CNT or ITTF.
Li-Ning staff Qi Shengnan said ML got another injection on wrist before World Cup. And he will go to Germany for treatment soon and will not play any more international tournaments this year (not sure about CTTSL and info will be released next week).

Very enjoyable games from Timo Boll, he's been playing great(er and greater) the whole year really. Still got to catch up on the final and losers' final, although I can't help being a bit disappointed that Ovtcharov won...

ps. Always so much spin in Timo's game! he's the one player for whom I feel, when I watch him, that the ball is clearly doing stuff that doesn't happen in normal people's table tennis ;p Getting more and more obvious to me lately. Of course his technique is very impressive and quite unique, but I still have to go ahead and poke fun at that moment during the WTTC 2017 (partly because of his comment about 80% of players boosting): youtu.be/raFxP6mURGk?t=14m14s No way this would happen to me!

My thoughts about this world Cup...
The tournament was great. Some amazing matches and results.
Timo Boll.. of course, Great!
I don't like Dima(I really don't) but I feel a little sorry for him in a way.. You know - he trains as hell and still is no good compared to the Chinese(this is my point of view, if you don't agree - that's ok :) ). And even after winning this World Cup he'll still be in the shadow of Timo. Cause, let's be realistic - Timo did most of the work (and Gauzy beating Mizutani).
But this World Cup had some insane matches with some very wild shots and very interesting rallies.
And the loss of Ma Long.. I like him very much, but it was a great thing for the sport that both of the chinese players lost to a non-chinese player and we had an eoropean final. This could give some hope to the young non-chinese players that are still in the shadow of Timo, Samsonov, Mizutani and may be somehow afraid of the chinese dominance. I think :)

hahahahaha I knew this day will come, ma long is still not like ZJK in crucial situations...kinda gives hardcore ML fans a taste of their own medicine when they said ZJK fans are full of excuses when ZJK lost

Its like saying dima didnt deserve to win because timo was tired and dima had a "lucky" draw . It is what it is end of story, competition is not 100 % fair for everyone and at the same time.

First off: congratulations to Dima and Timo.

Second: I do think this is good for the sport of table tennis as a whole.

Third: I think this shows how the moves the Chinese government made—in regards to the organization of the CNT coaching—have been helpful to the sport as a whole even if, this result was inadvertent.

By making decisions that truly hurt the CNT, the Chinese government may have helped make table tennis a little more interesting to fans from all over the world.

I feel for the players of the CNT though. It seems to me, without the amazing coaching they had while Liu Gouliang was the head coach, the overall play of the top players seems to be suffering. Perhaps it is a short term thing and the CNT will right itself. But it is hard to say.

FZD did not seem up to his usual standard in the finals of the Asian Cup where he lost to LGY either.

We can look at these things and think FZD had a bad day and ML and Lin Gaoyuan had bad days against Timo as well.

This may be true. History will tell the full tale in the coming years.

But I remember when Mike Tyson was convinced he was so good he did not need a good coaching staff and trainer and fired Kevin Rooney, only to watch his boxing skills rapidly slip and his corner of yes men unable to coach him out of tight battles. Against Buster Douglass they were so unprepared for Tyson’s opponent to put up a real fight that they did not have the standard tools (Enswell) for keeping the swelling of his eyes down.

It seems to me the Chinese government may have underestimated the importance of the coaching staff in the shifts they made in the recent past.

I feel for the CNT players but hope this is good for the sport in the long run for China to have to rebuild a little and for the rest of the world to see that China is not simply invincible.

And I do think that if Tyson had kept his original corner, he could have gone down as the greatest heavyweight of all times. But his decisions about coaching and his overconfidence about his skills without realizing how important his coaching and training had been caused his downfall.

Let’s hope the example of the CNT coaching staff that was dismissed ultimately helps the whole table tennis world improve their level.

The Chinese TT organization learned its lesson the hard way! Very few people can think anyone besides ML could win the tournament, except hardcore fans to certain players. I only watched ML played against Niwa and noticed he was so lousy. Even so Timo must play his best to beat ML. Too much lecturing from the communist government didn't do ML any good!

Awesome to see Timo Boll beat Ma Long in real life. Noone in the stadium really saw it coming. The vibrance, drama and the huge crowd support made this match worthy of the final for me! After this match pretty much everyone was rooting for Timo in the finals, but in the last games vs ovtcharov, we saw the toll his crazy matches agains the chinese players were taking. Timo was missing more shots and lacked some punch, while Dima was still going strong. Timo Boll = winner of the tournament for me.

I allso really enjoyed watching Simon Gauzy! Dima's speed (especially on backhand shots) was amazing, but the much younger Gauzy has a very nice style, with strawberry flicks and slow spinny returns just over the net. I felt in both his matches against Dima and Ma Long, he played very intelligent (i think he made at least 5 points against Ma Long with the same strategy), but he made too many service mistakes and was sometimes just overpowered with brute force. I hope to see more of the french player in the future!

can't wait to see the next FZD LGY encounter, this match seems more exciting at least in my eyes than any of them against ML who will definitely bounce back. Somehow even if ML is now a lot older than them, he seems to be in equilibrium in the past 2-3 years while the other two seem to be still struggling mentally and physically to find the "sweet spot" needed to win against the dragon
