Unless: you want to make the wings slightly less edgier.

Unless: you seal the blade - no need to do that on Koto (imho), but if you do sand it very lightly with a very finegrained paper afterwards.

I'm curious about this advice. Why would you sand away the sealer? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the sealer?

In my experience, when wetting the wood (which is what you do when applying a water-based sealant) the wood fibers will work a bit, making the surface notably rougher. You don't sand away the sealant, you just re-smooth the surface again.

I may be wrong here, of course, and will gladly stand corrected if a more wood-savvy person does so.

Definately don't sand the surface! Can do the handle to smoothing it up a bit if you want
