Women, probably Liu Shiwen, since she is easily the best. If she loses it's pretty much always an off day or luck, she never gets actually outplayed and can (and does) beat players like ding ning 4-0.

Among men, I think Harimoto is a clear favorite, but Lin Gaoyuwan could possibly beat him. Possibly.

That said, the most fun to watch games will be Koki Niwa's, as always, and especially Niwa VS Xu Xin if that happens :)

Also I wish Pitchford was playing because I really wanna see him win tournaments

This is the least predictable even since some time.
Xu Xin even though he performed bad at the Japan Open, could cruise trough if he feels comfortable.
So could a hungry for Tokyo Zhang Jike. Liang Jingkun could play like he does domestically and destroy everyone. Dima is always strong, especially without a Fan Zhendong or a Ma Long. LG could win. And of course Mr. Harimoto, who i think will need a bracket without Dima, and maybe Liang Jinkun who both could overpower him close to the table and have the arm reach to deal wide Balls. My dark horse is Ueda Jin, who recently started playing full time and i think could make it pretty far. Gut feeling is Zhang Jike just because he wants to win.

The Womens Side is also very unpredictable. My prediction is Ning vs Ito.

Can you blame them? From that angle it does look like one - I assume this is RM 011 (closest one in appearance according to Google Image search), but it's next to impossible to tell without a detail closeup.

Full disclosure: I know nothing about horology besides being able to recognize names of few famous Swiss watch brands. Also think it's silly to spend that much for the watch :).

Xu Xin didn't play Japan Open!

For me Xu Xin, Lin Gaoyuan, Liang Lingkun are the top contenders here. Harimoto still has to prove he can play this high level outside of Japan, I hope he can though.

Even though Ma Long and FZD aren't there, rest of the CNT major players are there. Xu Xin and ZJK are probably the most experienced and consistent of the bunch on the international scene. But Lin Gaoyuan, Fang Bo, Liang Jingkun, Yan An, and Wang Chuqin are just as good in terms of speed and power. It's all psychological. IMO, any one of them could win the title, with the right mindset.

On the morning of July 18th, the 2018 ITTF Korea Open men's singles group match was over. According to the new rules of the ITTF, the group stage entered the knockout round without re-lotting, and automatically entered the corresponding position according to the corresponding group and row publicity. . But somehow, the ITTF suddenly decided to conduct a round of draws. The results of the first draw showed that Zhang Jike’s opponent would be Guo Pingpeng’s Liang Jingkun. The result also caused questions from the people concerned, so the draw ceremony was re-run. In the second draw, Zhang Jike, Yan An and Liang Jingkun were all foreign players in the qualifiers of the National Table Tennis Team. However, after coordination and communication, the organizing committee decided the latest match results: Liang Jingkun played against Daga period, and Zhang Jike's opponent was replaced by teammate Yan An.

At 3:24 pm Beijing time, the ITTF also released the results through official Weibo.

Just ten minutes after the start of the game, according to news from Chinese sports reporters, Zhang Jike retired from the Korean Open due to a recurrence of a waist injury.

Why Yu Fun even bothers to play? Looks like she doesn't want to play at all the points, and that "I'm bad" behaviour, so annoying to a professional to have.

Also I thought she was playing for the US before not Portugal, how this could would be even possible?

Too sad there are no promising young stars in the horizon for CNT, other than fzd. Complacency starts to rear its ugly head, it seems.

I wouldn't be too worried. Not too long ago LGL was complaining in an interview the lack of serious challenging competition, which is neither good for China nor for Tabletennis in general.
So now finally there seem to appear some challenging serious contenders and people are speaking of China in trouble and are getting worried already?
C'mon, guys... or does someone seriously think China will all of a sudden lose its interest in TT and hence will stop developing strong tabletennis players with all that long developed infrastructure in their back???

Well, I don't think so! Just doesn't sound realistic to me!

China table tennis is in trouble , on the other hand, Japanese and Korea has some good new young players.Liang Jingkun, Lin Gaoyuan and Fan Zhendong are the young stars. FZD is the most consistent with a tough mentality.

Liang uses majority of BH during a game. Not a lot of variety.

Lin plays more various shots. But we know he needs to toughen up his mentality. Hopefully this will improve when he's a bit older.

But when these three stars turn 30, Harimoto will be early 20s. Hari can easily get two Olympic Gold consecutively if China doesn't produce any competitor. So far I can't see any hope apart from Wang Chuqin. But will see.

Keeping Harimoto pinned down to his short FH works extremely well for JYS.

The 2nd game appeared to be a lost cause until 9:5 when Harimoto figured out something. Can't exactly point out what it is, but Harimoto held on.

Ok, Harimoto has adapted to JYS's game plan in the 3rd game by slowing down just a bit. JYS better have a plan B.

Harimoto regressed yet again. Tons of misses from forcing shots after shots.

The one facing the camera always loses. The pattern of game 5 follows that to a T. Harimoto off to a start but it got draggy afterwards. Kirishima called TO at 7:4. Good call there. Very crucial game.

Harimoto's FH slap at 5:4 was the last straw. That's really deflating. Can he break the spell? 10:8, 10:9...Yes, he can. Harimoto the Spell Breaker advances to the next round.

I thought something was up, googled if she was naturalized like Jeon Jihee but didn't find anything. From her positioning to her technique, everything screams Chinese. Also very good off the table, her loops actually loop like crazy and she emanates that confidence where you know she'll probably win, she knows it and her opponent knows it as well, the kinda thing you see with the Chinese players.

Liang Jingkun, Lin Gaoyuan and Fan Zhendong are the young stars.

One reason CNT players are having trouble in the World Tour is that they're not used to the idea of competing abroad so often. They prefer to spend more time on training and use the World Tour to tune up before the majors.

With the World Ranking reform, they're now forced to use competition for training instead, a model that fits perfectly well with the ideal of the JNT. Ito, for instance, has said she likes playing matches MUCH more than working on the basics.

OTOH, this competition-oriented approach doesn't sit well with the CNT. They have to field their B team players to the World Tour WAY more than before, many of which are supposed to play the role of copy players, serving the few cream-of-the-crop players. The "no separation of association" is completely at odds with their central idea of working as a team. Now you have these copy players thinking "perhaps I have a chance to make it big, too." You could sense the team spirit is not as solid anymore.

Another factor is that there has been a restructuring of the analytics team. Recent rumor has it the team has been dissolved. Li Xiaodong used to lead the team but he retired some time after Rio Olympics. Liu Heng is supposed to be the team leader now, and he once wrote on his Weibo denouncing the rumor.

However, the CTTA have recently issued a request for tender (http://www.ctta.cn/xhgg/qttz/2018/0622/175134.html) on a whole range of services in sports and health science for the players. This suggests the team is definitely going through a significant change at the moment.

the Chinese team has thoroughly studied Harimoto. Now he is the enemy nr. 1 of the Chinese table tennis. At the end of the match, Liang showed off the Chinese flag in his shirt, as if to prove that China is still the best country in table tennis. I think that Harimoto has not prepared enough for this match and that next time Liang will have serious difficulties in winning the game. Among other things, Liang but especially his coach were anti-sports claiming that he was given a point for taking the edge, but in reality, the ball had hit the outside of the edge.

Didn't Hari's coach agreed that it was LJK's point? I watched this on stream, although I can't tell whether its edge or side but LJK looped the ball from middle of table to Hari's FH side of table and the ball touched the right side of table. Then LJK pointed to the table indicating that was his point. Hari looked at his coach who seemed to agree. Then there was some sort of discussion going on between the empires and the chinese coach. You can't say LJK is dishonest when his opponent coach agreed with him. If its his point, then its his point.

Technically speaking, he didn't make the main draw when he pulled out from his match against YA. But IIRC, there is a condition that says it's OK if you lost to your teammate. So he probably pulled out as a form of protest.

I believe it. I think it's mostly mental stress, not physical (unless he has injuries). When there's huge expectations on Harimoto, it can negatively impact his performance. Also, younger players are more prone to inconsistencies. It's normal to see them fluctuate from tournament to tournament.

Glad to hear you like it. Yes, she communicates in Mandarin with her Chinese coaches when training. That's also another reason why I think she has a hard time beating top CNT players. She plays and thinks like a Chinese player. Yet, they've mentioned quite a few times in recent interviews that they actually find it harder to play foreigners.

for the first time in a while (ever ?), I actually have some expectations for Kasumi Ishikawa in her SF vs Zhu Yuling.
I think she really played extremely well against Sun Yingsha and Mima Ito

I felt her FH had more spin/speed/power than I've ever seen from her, and I've seen a few very good long powerful BH shots too, like one receive that left SYS without reaction. From a mental point of view, her performance shows she has never given up at improving despite numerous setbacks and not being so young anymore. If she can stay positive and manages to have a good start, possibly with some luck, i believe she can do it !

Come on Kasumi !!!

Where is Adam Bobrow, the voice of ITTF?

On Facebook, he said that had missed his flight to Korea, but I think he was supposed to have flown yesterday?

No disrespect to Galia, but I was looking forward to Adam's commentary. Is he announcing any of these matches, or just spectating? I hope he didn't get in trouble for showing up late to work.

I remember he admitted on TV sometime after losing to Harimoto at the WTTC 2017 that his body started declining around 26. In a recent episode of Spirits of the Athletes, the crew followed his journey in the Russian league, during which he discusses aspects of his game that clearly fell behind, namely the chiquita, and how he has to get it sorted out if he were to play in Tokyo Olympics.

Either way, his form is getting back on track if the recent Tour results are any indication.

I would have quit long ago if I was her, LOL

Will CHEN Meng justify her #1 ranking tomorrow against ZHU Yuling ? She has already beaten DING Ning and LIU Shiwen in this tournament. How likely is it that we won't see DING and LIU again in World Championships or Olympics anymore ? It could be CHEN Meng, ZHU Yuling and WANG Manyu ... and there's a lot of able young players not far behind, CHEN Xingtong, or SUN Yingsha come to mind....

Same for ISHIKAWA, it could be ITO HIRANO HAYATA, and a lot of players not far behind and improving fast...

So I'm betting CM, ZYL and WMY to be the choices of CNT

LJK is known for his power, quickness, and that killer bankhand. But consistency hasn’t been his forte. I’m pleasantly surprised to see how much he’s improved in this regard. Those twenty some bounds of fat haven’t been shedded in vain brother.

My Chinese Olympic team would be ML, FZD, and LJK for men, CM, ZYL, and WMY for women.

Tomorrow will be fun. If my memory serves me right, Jang Woojin eliminated Liang Jingkun on the way to the WJTTC title. No less than Ma Long has complimented Jang's game and style as unusual for CNT opponents in its use of variation and deception over power, which might explain why Jang had exceptional results vs Mizutani.

I am still betting on the big Fatty though largely because he is no longer as Fat.

The 1st game will be very crucial if Jang is to cause an upset. LJK's last 2 matches against Harimoto and Lim Jonghoon ended 11:9 and 12:10 in the 1st game and both went into downward spirals afterwards. If he manages that 1st game, I wouldn't be surprised if the pressure that has built up until now unravels on LJK.

Jang Woojin always considered as a man with immense potential in Korea. So far he could not rise up from the shadows of Sangsu and JYS. I am so happy he is beginning to carve a niche for himself. But defeating LJK in beast mode would be v difficult. LJK would want to win it bad and claim his position in CNT.

Liu Zhiqiang is up to it again with the distraction tactics but it didn't work.

Jang Woojin up 1:0.

JWJ has some trouble with LJK's short backspin serve to his short forehand. He switched up his service to great effect. Turned the table but wasted his serve, 8:8. Same fate for LJK, 8:10. JWJ clutched it this time , 11:9.

Liu Zhiqiang forced to call TO at 1:3. Told LJK to go for JWJ's BH and don't back down.

LJK is missing a lot on his BH, and coupling that with JWJ's FH makes things so much harder for him. He also misses tons of forehand flicks on JWJ's serve to his short forehand.

1 game away from defeat.

LJK can't carry out his game plan. He simply can't pin JWJ down to his BH. It's a done deal.
