edit: ok koki niwa and kim min seok are coming :) and lin gaoyuan made a huge jump as well.
edit 2: and chen meng, winner of the girls wjttc, from unranked to #38. think, she will be one of the greatest, if she continues

A few months ago I said that soon Ma Long would be ranked #1 and Zhang Jike would be ranked #2. The order of the top 3 is now how it should be. :) I think these rankings are pretty close to accurate. Ma Lin will slip out of the top 10 in the next few months if he does not turn things around. Based on performance since August 7th might be too high for how he is playing but he still has the points accumulated. That is how Samsonov was in the top 10 for the last few months as well. The changing of the guard.

i thought, that ma lin lost more points and that wang hao not get that many points. zhang jike and ma long got big points okay. but i never thought, that wang hao gets so many points for beating "weak" players and failing against the big ones. hmmmm. and ma lin lost so many games against very weak players and is still better than mizutani and just a bit under xu xin. cant understand this :/

True, Ma Lin lost against much lower ranking players, but in doubles, most of the time he finished up in the finals. So, that kinda balanced it out a little for him.

so doubles count for the single ranking? really??

Yup,:) you do get individual points, though not a lot, but it helps. There are no doubles world ranking in TT, unlike tennis where there are doubles tournaments only. Therefore you get doubles specialists in tennis. They don't play singles, just doubles all year long.

hm...ok never noticed that and cant imagine. but ok :D and a bit stupid. so a lower player (maybe chen qi) could play all time long with ma long and win every tournement and get points .. :/

Yup, it's true. But TT is not like tennis where it's a "full" pro kind of sport. In tennis you can choose your partner, not the nation/country that chooses your partner. So it's common to have partners from other nations. In tennis you have your own managers, own PA, own coach, own medic, own physiotherapist even your own dietitian and stringers (like Pete Sampras). Your country only chooses your partner in Feds Cup and Davis Cup, or any other cup tournaments that involves the country. Otherwise, these tennis players will have to travel with their entourage on their own, not being supported by his/her country.

So, for Chen Qi to partner Ma Long or any players for that matter, it is not his call, it's Liu's call, the country.

December 2011 World Rankings

This month there have been many notable changes in the World Rankings, the most interesting for me was Vladimir Samsonov's downfall.

"If some climb the rankings; logically some must fall, the most notable casualty being Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus.
The player who once held the top spot on the World Rankings is enduring a torrid time at the moment; the result is he falls from no.9 to no.14.
It is the first time this century he has not held a top ten place."
~ITTF.com

Looking at all the names above Samsonov, I truly believe all have proven themselves superior to the Belarussian.

It's sad to see him so far below his former glory, but along with his drop in form there have been several impressive performances this month from up and coming European players.

Frenchman Adrien Mattenet, Russia's Kirill Skachkov, and the already esteemed Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany have shown vast improvements. All three reaching new hights on the world rankings list.

Adrien Mattenet breaches the top 20, rising from 24 to 19, due to his stellar performance at the recent World Cup on his home turf in Paris, France.

Skachkov displayed the prominent Russian strength from the backhand in his victory against Ma Lin at the World Team Cup. His team showed Russia is becoming a force to be reckoned with.

The final of the World Team Cup saw Russian born Ovtcharov thrust into the limelight when his overcame former world champion Wang Hao in imperious fashion. He made it clear the Chinese are human after all.

Though Germany, Russia, and Korea were unable to best China this time round, we were certainly shown how possible it is.

Each team will return prepared, having studied November's matches, and one thing's certain, we'll be in for some intense matches from the world's future champions!

Ha Ha Ha...
Yes, it was adequate, but I can do much better.
Perhaps if time permits (which it will) on Jan 1st I can do a piece on 2012's prospects for up and coming players.
Koki Niwa has been on the rise, far outstripping his doubles partner Kenta Matsudaira (to my dismay). But it's still good to see another lefty breaching the higher echelons, and at such a young age!
The French quartet of talent also warrent a mention for their dominance in the European junior scene.
Korean men's team newby Kim Min Seok will be one to follow. You never know what he's going to bring to the table.

So when I look at it,..

1 (1) Ma Long - he stayed at the no 1 spot and no wonder he did, he is trully unbeatable!
2 (3) Zhang Jike - now he is no 2 in the world and it shows reality as the only one able to beat him is no 1 player :)
3 (2) Wang Hao - it was just a matter of time to see this happen.. Long he was no 1 in the world, but he just cant fight Ma Long and Zhang Jike
4 (4) Timo Boll - In fact it surprises me according to his recent form that he is still here.. He may probably focus more in the play than his book
5 (8) Xu Xin - Nice jump up for Xu Xin, he soon will be thread for top 3 players, for sure!
6 (6) Wang Liqin - Still in good form, still cant beat the best (just once he did Zhang)
7 (5) Ma Lin - Down down down down.. just like Samsonov.. Its a fall, not that huge one, but it is..
8 (7) Jun Mizutani - He is in a good form, just still not able to beat top chinese and also Timo Boll.. So this is his spot for now
9 (10) Joo Se Hyuk - after beating Timo Boll he finds himself one place higher
10 (12) Dimitrij Ovtcharov - Jumping 2 places higher, entering the top 12 and no wonder he did :)
11 (14) Chuang Chih-Yuan - jumping 3 places up, as he beat Jun Mizutani and showing good performance all around, he deserves it!

Women!
1 (1) Ding Ning
2 (2) Li Xiaoxia
3 (3) Guo Yan - First 3 positions didnt change despite Guo Yan went out early in the Grand finals :)
4 (5) Liu Shiwen - step by step, place after place, Liu Shiwen climbs back to the no 1 spot :)
5 (4) Feng Tianwei - finds herself just behing the top chinese players
6 (6) Guo Yue
7 (7) Kasumi Ishikawa
8 (9) Wang Yuegu - after beating Guo Yan she jumps one place higher
9 (8) Ai Fukuhara
10 (10) Yana Tie

So not much great changes in womens rankings..
