The forthcoming Bribar sponsored Bristol Grand Prix is to be played over the weekend of the 13th/14th November and held at the Frenchay Campus, of the Bristol UWE, Coldharbour Lane, BS16 1QY and has attracted a huge entry of 178 competitors. Unfortunately 30 entries had to be returned and there are 71 names already on Referee Mick Strode’s scratch list.

Guy Fawkes Night has been and gone for the 404th time, however the fireworks will really sparkle and come to an explosive finish in the Women’s Open event scheduled for Sunday. What a great line up of thrilling matches we have in store for any table tennis enthusiast and to be honest I cannot with any confidence pick the winner!

Leading the seeds is Hannah Hicks (England ranked number 3- who came so close to capturing a famous Team Bronze medal at the recent Commonwealth Games). Hot on her heels will be Egle Adomelyte S2 (a hardened competitor and prolific Grand Prix winner) with Emma Vickers S3 (England ranked at 5- The Draycott and Long Eaton club player who has won countless domestic tournaments that include being a three times Schools National Champion and always a huge threat in Grand Prix events). Following her incredible run of success in Grand Prix events since her return to table tennis, Lauren Spink S4 will be challenging for the title. She has been in scintillating form as recently she beat Niall Cameron, the Scottish number 2 in the Batts Super league tournament and fresh from her long awaited England Senior appearance and that in the Home Nations Championships. Making up the top quintet of seeds is the dynamic 17year old Guernsey superstar Alice Loveridge who enjoyed tremendous success at the Singapore Youth Olympics winning the coveted plate competition. She is also an Island Games Gold Medallist (twice) and recent singles Gold Medallist at the Senior Six Nations Championships.

Sixteen year old Natalie Slater a Home Nations junior team Gold Medallist and now playing brilliantly in the Women’s Elite league in Sweden is seeded at 6, followed by Lancashire’s top player Lindsey Reynolds, S7, this year’s winner of the Newcastle Grand Prix. Making up the top eight seeds is Charlotte Carey, Welsh number 1 junior who has recently competed so well in the Commonwealth Games and on her best day can beat anyone! The strength in depth of the Women’s Open event is probably the toughest ever in recent years. To follow the top eight we have the likes of twice England National Veteran’s Champion Sanja Clements, plus the spirited up and coming foursome of Yolanda King, twins Angharad and Megan Phillips and Melissa Wright, to mention just a few all in the melting pot of leading contenders in the 43 strong line up.

Four times Grand Prix Points Champion Gavin Rumgay tops the bill in the Men’s Open event also scheduled for Sunday and is seeded to meet Welsh number one Ryan Jenkins in the final. It could be a repeat of their superb final at the Liverpool GP earlier in the year, where Jenks came out on top! Leading the hunt to knock these top two out of the tournament are Damien Nicholls, Mike Marsden, Paul McCreery, Niall Cameron, Richard Andrews, Stephen Jenkins, Tom Maynard and seeded at ten is Alim Hirji. It will be no surprise to see the likes of Emran Hussein, Lewis Gray and Jonathan Crawford making a bold showing. A warm welcome is extended to Steve Hall, the master of pimples and deception, on his return to Grand Prix action!

Play commences at 08.45 am on Saturday 13th with the many banded events hogging the limelight. With this huge entry Referee Mick Strode and his team of officials are on a very tight schedule to finish by 8.30 pm with the hall to be vacated by 9pm latest. He would ask all Saturday’s losing competitors to come forward straight away and offer to umpire, thus keeping the event running smoothly and on time.

Look forward to seeing you there and “May the nets and edges- be with you”
