What a great start to the year with the Hungarian Open last week, and now this week we will see the top European players take part in the Europe Top 16! Number 1, 2, 3 and 4 seeds Dimitrij Ovtcharov, Timo Boll,Mattias Falck and Liam Pitchford will all be looking to take the title. Samsonov and Groth will definitely look to go all the way as well as number 7 seed Simon Gauzy. Kristian Karlsson and Marcos Freitas follow closely as the 7th and 8th seed. A fantastic event to follow, be sure to get involved in the TTD discussions!

We can use this thread as a means to display all the latest results, videos and news from this spectacular Top 16 event! What are your predictions?

It's amazing to see Ni Xialian still up there. A unique player, and a long-time nemesis for multiple TT generations

On the other side of the arbitrary gender gap — GO VLADI!

That being said, good to see where Pitch and Kristian K stand these days. And will the French squad manifest itself this time?

Vladi played so well at the Hungarian Open(although he lost his only match) that I hope he can win the Top 16.. If somebody beats Timo before that of course :)

Rooting for Pitchford for this one, but would be totally fine with Timo, Dima or Vladi taking it as well.

That .. is .. trully SAD ..

I Do not think it is so sad, But more logical. It takes longer for the europeans to become good and reach their peak because they start to train alot in a much later age compared to the chinese. They need to get a certain amount of practice before they can become really good. So many europeans are almost at their best between the age of 30 to 40.

But i can still understand What you are saying. It would be much better for european tabletennis if the middle age was much lower. It Will be interesting to see how long Boll can be the best or one of the best in europe when he really is closing in on the age of 40 and even over that. I can agree that, it is sad that the best Guy in europé is almost 40.

Well I also think it's sad cause Europe hasn't had any new talents for the past 10-20 years. Boll won the World Cup in 2002 when he was only 21, Vladi was #1 at the age of 21 or 22 I think, Maze(not long career because of traumas) won the Europe top 12 when he was 23(or 24) and the next year finished third in the World Champs..
In my opinion real talents reveal themselves early too. Not in the age of 30. In that age they still maintain their class and status and should be challenged by the next generation. I can't see such talents in Europe for now and the fact that the average age in the top 16 is above 30 years just confirms the situation.

of course Asia is younger, as always, but gap isn't so huge

now about new superstar crisis in EU. players like Timo, ML, Harimoto, FZD, WCQ don't appear so often, even in China. for example, it took Taiwan 10 years after Chuang Chih-Yuan to raise Chen Chien-An, then another ten years to Lin Yun-Ju. None of them became ML, but that's the best they've had in the last 30 years. The best Singaporean has already passed 36 etc.

Personally I think Franziska or Duda has a chance to became next Timo, Groth next Maze and Pitchford next Vladi )) at a later age, but there is a chance. At least they'll play the role of "almost greats" until new true Timo, Maze and Vladi come up

Although I mostly agree with you and I think there are current hopes for Europe(although for me there's only Pitch) I would like to point out that you excluded from one list the high extreme(Vladi) and from the other - the low extreme(Harimoto) - thus pulling them towards each other more :)

Always thought Habesohn is somewhat underrated. Has a nice backhand and seems to win alot in the league. To bad Falck played Gionis. Forehand short pimple players are no good against defenders. I think Falck have almost never won against åkerström But have trained against him alot.

So the 3 best European players make the semis. Disappointed in Gauzy not making it a more interesting final 4 but Habesohn gets results, can't fault that.

Gauzy beating Pitch isn't unusual. They used to practice together in Ochsenhausen and know each other before Pitch left Ochsenhausen and Calderano came as a substitute.

On the other hand Habesohn really has a winning streak at the moment. He just recently has beaten Fang Bo in the Champions League

NextLevel

Habesohn is one of the players who I think has been strongly aided by the plastic ball. This is purely my opinion so take it with a grain of salt. The first time I ever saw him play, the first thing that stood out to me was his ability to rally. If he was rallying with a CNT or top Euro pro, you couldn't really tell the difference. But serve and third ball... well... those things matter less now so he is more relaxed and his true strengths are coming to the fore.

I think the average value does not provide much information here. There are 8 from the top Asians being 25 or younger and in Europe there are only 2 (Pitchford and Gauzy), which both have a lot of ups and downs.

Not so sure about that.

Remember we often have to watch from an unfortunate angle looking from above. If we'd had the same perspective as the umpires and the players things would look differently.

This serve is not legal. All pro players do illegal serves thats normal. Everyone try to hide the ball when doing serve. All best!

Not all do illegal serves, but many of them. Boll oder Samsonov are clean for example.

I don't agree. That was one match and without the injury go Samsonov, Dima would have been far less confused. Dima usually does well vs Vladi.

Yeah, in Baku games Dima also won

I think many players hide their serve more or start doing it when the game is tight.

The live stream is not working for me. Is the match over?

Another incredible thriller.
Dima managed to fight back 2 matchpoints in the seventh at 8:10 and making 4 straight points in a row.
Incredible.

Hat off for Dima. I'd not have begrudged a Samsonov victory, though. Quite the contrary.

Best match I've seen since WTTC 2017 final!

If you love table tennis you have to watch this, not just for the score but there were so many incredible rallies.

Dima looks like he is coming back into form. Dark horse to go deep in World championship? I'd love to see it.

Feel bad for uncle Vladi, he played so well. What a pleasure to watch him. Both semis and both final and 3rd place play off were all great.

Yep. I'm honestly almost shocked at the amount of high quality matches we've seen in this tournament, almost every match i watched had so many crazy rallies, really a fantastic tournament.

Austrians probably will hate on me for this (though I think Sofia has enough humour to take a joke)
but since when did Olive Oyl pick up a tabletennis bat? Am I the only one seeing this?

The semis and finals were unbelievable!

After watching the Dima vs Timo match on youtube (saw the final live, but couldn't watch the semis) I really think that Dima won some sets against Timo and against Vladi because of his very suspicious pendulum serve. I'm almost sure that sometimes it's totally illegal because you can see that Timo and Vladi are sometimes receiving it without problems and sometimes just fully misjudging the spin. And I know that it can not be seen from the screen, the serves are not easy to read, they want to receive them in the hardest way, etc., etc. But you know - those two(T and V) are very experienced players and they played 7 sets against Dima (and it's not like they haven't played him before) so I really believe that some of those serves are really hidden.
Also, you can take my words with a grain of salt cause I really don't like Dima :)

That grain was pretty salty.
