Table tennis has took of the a flying start in 2012 with the newly introduced World Tour's from the ITTF. Formerly known as Pro Tour's the World Tours have had a huge impact on table tennis this year with the Hungarian Open World Tour 2 weeks ago and the Slovenian Open World Tour 1 week ago. Leading up to the Slovenian Open World Tour Ma Long (World number 1) had not lost a match in a grand total of 224 days with 5 consecutive ITTF Pro Tour/World Tour wins! However last week World number 2 Zhang Jike stopped Ma Long in his tracks as he defeated the 'machine' by 4 sets to 3 in an epic battle at the Slovenian Open Men's Singles final!

Wang Hao the World no.3 enters the Qatar Open World Tour as the number 1 seed!

The best Chinese stars are competing as seen here! (http://www.ittf.com/ittf_tournaments/ittf_entries_web2.asp?Gender=M&Tour_ID=2111&Singles=1&Seeded_Singles=1) thanks to the ITTF.

Wang Hao, Xu Xin, Ma Lin, Joo Se Hyuk, Jun Mizutani, Dimitrij Ovtcharov, Chuang Chih-Yuan and many more World class table tennis players will appear in the Men’s Singles event; whilst in the counterpart Women’s Singles competition the top seeded Chinese players in he World have not entered. The seeds are as follows: Wang Yuegu, Kasumi Ishikawa, Ai Fukuhara, Tie Yana, Hirano Sayaka and many more will be in action.

Who will win Qatar Open 2012? Who did you vote for in the TTD poll? Who would you like to see win?

Which player will produce the goods with the absence of Ma Long, Zhang Jike and Timo Boll??

Voted for Ma Long, because I think he has the best chance to win... But it wont surprise me if Ovtcharov makes it instead! Or at least he can cause some upsets against the Chinese ;)

I think Ma Long will hit back. Interesting to see none of China's top women in the seedings but most of the men! Commitment ladies!

yeah i hope, that ma long will win ;) now he has nothing to lose and can play with old power :)
but also i'm looking forward to timo and dima. hope they can do a good run :)

Normally the Zhang - Ma fight will continue I guess. But then Zhang Jike has just won a title, so history suggests he will perform bad :p I'm hoping for some upsets :) It's a great line-up! Ma Long plays no doubles it seems, so he will be totally focused on the Singles. I hope Boll or Dima can upset him though. Or maybe Mattenet. Can't wait :D

Amazing stuff.

Can't really hope Joo to win really :(
But I guess I won't stop hoping for him.

However I believe this will be a great tourney.

P.s. Dan, the name under the ZJK pic is Joo Se Hyuk :D

Bonus:
A quote from OOAKForum

Furthermore, he knows he's chanceless against the top Chinese with the DTecs. So why using it still? He proved that with his other pip he could compete with the Chinese. So why changing it then? Is he up to something for the Olympics? The Hungarian Open was a test for the new setup and he's playing the new setup again only in the Olympics. In that way the Chinese cannot study his game too much...

No problem, they will just make the Chinese copy of Joo play with Joo's new setup ;)

Joo Se Hyuk is a genius. We will see how far he will come in the olympics!
I hope Ma Long will win the Qatar Open.
And hopefully he has to play Timo Boll in the semis and Ma Long can win him 4-0 :)
Or Timo Boll kicks out Zhang Jike (like last year) and then will lose against Ma Long 4-0 in the final.
If this happens, Ma Long chance for olympia gets better and Boll goes to Olympia anyway ^o^

Totally agree Tim!

I want Ma Long to win again, I think the final will be another Ma and Zhang, but I hope Timo Boll can make a change to this. Hopefully he has some new tactics for the Chinese players.

I think Jun Mizutani and Joo Se Hyuk can do some damage in this tournament to :)

Here is my prediction :
Men's Singles : Zhang Jike ( I loved the way he has changed his strategy against Ma Long, instead of only playing to Ma Long's comparatively weak back hand and becoming predictable , he is trying to play spinnier which is ZJK's strength )
Men's Doubles : Ma Lin / Xu Xin ( There is no better doubles player than Ma Lin, its better LGL recoginzes that by giving him a slot for olympics , then Dan can play him once more :P )
Women's Singles : Feng Tianwei ( Shes the best when the Chinese are not around )

This is going to be the best tournament yet this year. All the top players going to be there. I really would like to see how Jun will perform, and Timo too. Jun's and Timo's places are pretty much confirmed in the Olympics, but I think this could be the tournament for them to see how good they are against the current form of other top players.

I'm gonna find out about the Chinese women why they're not playing. I'm really curious...

Thanx Gabriel. I also took the initiative to check tabletennista, and your thoughts was spot on. It'll be interesting to know whether they would compete in the Kuwait Open after Qatar.

Shame about Timo. A bit worrying because though he might be fit to compete in the Olympics, but he might not be match fit. Qatar and Kuwait Open always have the best players participations. He needs to compete at a high level I feel in order for him to peak at the right time, and that's the Olympics.

Imo, I think that it is right for Timo to skip the Qatar Open and Europe Top 12 since it is the Olympics year. At the age of 30, this could be his last chance at winning gold for Germany and a singles title for himself.

Well I just checked the players list and I would like to propose: cancel the vote and make a new one ;-)

So I guess this would be best to do.. cancel the vote and make a new one..

Ew.. I was already suprised when I read that the CNT started a 40-day training camp, because I thought they would play in Qatar. But this means there will be a lot of money up for grabs for players who didn't get a chance in Slovenia and Hungary. Interesting..

I just checked the Main draw and.. there can be several interesting matches going on..
first of all round 1:
Kenji Matsudaira vs. Vladimir Samsonov.. Samsonov has to proove himself, his form is not great lately and this Japanese is quite good..
Kishikawa vs. Ruwen Filus, german defender.. too bad not streamed..
Crisan vs. Štetinin.. omg would love to see that one!
Chuang-Chih Yuan vs. Legout .. ou yeah!
Tiago Apolonia vs. Simon Gauzy .. cant really bet on that one!
Chen Weixing vs. Jean Michel Saive can be pretty damn good too!
Monteiro vs. Smirnov!
Habesohn vs. Mizutani!

And without any upsets there are another possible matches, like:
Joo Se Hyuk vs. Chen Weixing .. cant really imagine how that would look like!
Ning Gao vs. Christian Suss
Robinot vs. Koki Niwa
Mizutani vs. Ryu Seung Min
Baum vs. Ma Lin
Tokic vs. Persson, Tokic vs. Chuang Chih Yuan
Ovtcharov vs. Crisan, Ovtcharov vs. Kishikawa
Samsonov vs. Wang Hao
Ovtcharov vs. Wang Hao..
Many possibilities.. on a good matches :)

Ovtcharov vs. Joo Se Hyuk can be quite interesting if it happens.

He played in the Slovenian Open, lost 4-0 against Zhang Jike I think.

And great match in doubles Monteiro Apolonia vs. Robinot Gauzy .. :)

Michal_Z
02-09-2012, 11:06 AM
I just checked the Main draw and.. there can be several interesting matches going on..
first of all round 1:
Kenji Matsudaira vs. Vladimir Samsonov.. Samsonov has to proove himself, his form is not great lately and this Japanese is quite good..
Kishikawa vs. Ruwen Filus, german defender.. too bad not streamed..
Crisan vs. Štetinin.. omg would love to see that one!
Chuang-Chih Yuan vs. Legout .. ou yeah!
Tiago Apolonia vs. Simon Gauzy .. cant really bet on that one!
Chen Weixing vs. Jean Michel Saive can be pretty damn good too!
Monteiro vs. Smirnov!
Habesohn vs. Mizutani!

And without any upsets there are another possible matches, like:
Joo Se Hyuk vs. Chen Weixing .. cant really imagine how that would look like!
Ning Gao vs. Christian Suss
Robinot vs. Koki Niwa
Mizutani vs. Ryu Seung Min
Baum vs. Ma Lin
Tokic vs. Persson, Tokic vs. Chuang Chih Yuan
Ovtcharov vs. Crisan, Ovtcharov vs. Kishikawa
Samsonov vs. Wang Hao
Ovtcharov vs. Wang Hao..
Many possibilities.. on a good matches :)

Ovtcharov vs. Joo Se Hyuk can be quite interesting if it happens.

Ha.. Just like I said.. Samsonov had a tough time beating Kenji Matsudaira 4:3 (14-16,9-11,9-11,11-7,11-7,11-5,11-8), but credits to him to come back from 0:3 down..
Kishikawa LOST to Ruwen Filus, surprise surprise!!!
Crisan without any problems with Štetinin..
Chuang 4:0 beat Legout, too bad it was not closer match..
Apolonia beat Gauzy 4:1, I also expected it to be closer,..
Weixing beat easy Saive 4:0, that is also unexpected, but seems that Weixing is in a good form :)

Han Ying is really playing well atm, 2:2 in sets against Feng Tianwei and leading 7:0 in the fifth..

Michal_Z

And she won! 11:9 in the sixth!
OMG .. Feng Tianwei was so sad.. :(

Michal_Z
02-09-2012, 12:58 PM
BTW ... RYU SEUNG MIN is OUT!
He lost to Alexander Shibaev by 1:4!!! (11-5,11-13,8-11,10-12,12-14)

What a surprise!
Seems like russians found some way to beat classic penholders.. hehe..

Well, Wang Hao just won over Lee Jung Woo, but it was really close..
It was not like Wang Hao is much much better..
In fact, its nice to see, that if you take out Ma Long and Zhang Jike, you get in fact tough matches, not really able to say who will win before they really win..
And I like it this way!
But .. damn, I miss Ma Long and Zhang too .. crap.. whats better? :D
Heh..
Anyways, really wondering, if Joo Se Hyuk wins with Francizska, .. well .. Wang Hao destroyed him last time,.. will he be able to do something with that?

Just watched some matches. Franziska did great. :o I never really watched him play but I was shocked by how his technique looks like Boll's technique and how well he did against Joo.
Also a bit disappointed about Koki Niwa, Ovtcharov and Mizutani. Would've loved to see Ovtcharov-Wang Hao, Koki Niwa-Xu Xin or Mizutani-Xu Xin. But at least Joo's still there. :p I think Xu Xin will beat Ma Lin again, but I'm not sure about Wang-Joo.

Funny that Wang Hao didnt manage to use any of his 2 matchballs.. hmm..
Good job from Xu Xin.. and I really hate Ma Lin for beating Mizutani.. crap!
Mizutani had to win, he was 3:1 up, 3:0 up in the fifth, how on earth could he lose??? :(
Was really sad there..

Xu Xin's determination helped him win the Qatar Pro Tour Table Tennis Tournament. He beat team mate Wang Hao in the decider 4-3. The last game went to deuce!

Wang Hao was unlucky. It was an important match for him because it probably would have helped his Olympics cause.

Right now I think the young guns on the Chinese National Team are too much for the old guard. Without Ma Long and Zhang Jike, Xu Xin ends up taking Wang Hao and Ma Lin out.
