South Korea's lineup has been decided.

Men: Jeong Youngsik (by WR), Jang Woojin (by WR), Lee Sangsu (by WR), Lim Jonghoon (through round-robin internal trials), An Jaehyun (through round-robin internal trials)
Women: Choi Hyojoo (through elimination-format internal trials), Lee Eunhye (through elimination-format internal trials), Lee Zion (through elimination-format internal trials), Suh Hyowon (coaches' recommendation), Shin Yubin (coaches' recommendation)

Interesting for the women, bold but also risky allocating three places for internal trials. Understand why Yang was dropped since she hasn't been performing but IMO, Jeon deserves a place for her tenacity.

The strangest thing is how Suh was selected over Jeon. Jeon beat Chen Meng at T2 Singapore while Suh wasn't even present.

Germania Open - Jeon withdraw...

I suspect it's a mix of different reasons:

1) Diversifying playing styles – Choi Hyojoo is a leftie who uses short pips on her BH. Lee Eunhye, Lee Zion and Shin Yubin are all righties and inverted-rubber users. Makes sense to add a chopper to vary the play a little.

2) Seniority – South Korea emphasises a lot on seniority as it is also a Confucian-based, East-Asian society which makes Suh the prime choice. Shin is then obviously chosen as she is touted to be the next rising star.

3) Ethnic Nationalism – Choi and Lee Eunhye are both naturalised Korean citizens (previously Chinese nationals) and adding Jeon would mean that the composition of the team will comprise majority non-local-born players. That seems to be frowned upon considering that discourses like danil minjok ('one people') and minjok ('Korean clan/race') are quite prevalent, as far as I know.

*updated to reflect that it is Lee Zion not Ji Eunchae.

On the 15th, Yoo said in a telephone conversation with Newsis. “Let's talk about infinite competition after taking office last March, and Jun Ji-hee has been following the movement. He put up a lot of strength to break the yoke, but he was poor in the selection. In fact, I didn't know that Jun Ji-hee would fall out. ”

Jeon Ji-hee was not included in the recommendation of the Korean table tennis association. This was because the national team only allowed two naturalized players. Another Chinese naturalized player, Choi Hyo-ju and Lee Eun-hye (Korean Air), couldn't put Jeon Ji-hee on the national team. The Competition Promotion Committee chose Seo Hyo-won and Shin Yu-bin (Chung Myung-jung) as the world champions.

Yoo said, “There will be pain, but this time I need to renew my mind. It is clear that Jeon Ji-hee is a talented player. We need to be more urgent. ”

Shin Yu-bin, who heard the sound of “table tennis Shin-dong,” took the opportunity to compete in the first world championship. Although he was sluggish in the first round twice in a row, he was chosen by the Committee for Improving Performance as it showed possibility last year.

Yoo said, “Shin Yubin continues to improve. The world's eighth-placed player also won. "I wasn't able to use my skills because of tension."

...Among Korean women, Jeon Ji-hee is the 16th highest in the world. Next is Seo Hyo-won, 24th. Jeon Ji-hee, who defeated the world's No. 1 China in China at the T2 Diamond League 2019 Singapore in November last year. Nevertheless, why was Jun Ji-hee not selected?

Samsung Life's Choi Hyo-Ju is interviewing after passing the selection of the national team for the Busan World Table Tennis Championships held in Jincheon athletes' village on the 14th (Jincheon = Yonhap News)
This is due to the different selection rules of the men's and women's teams. Originally, the men's national team decided to make a strategic delegation for this year's Tokyo Olympic Games since May last year at the request of manager Kim Taek-soo (Mirae Asset Daewoo). They have shown their international competitiveness so far and have secured stability as the Olympic team medals are the most prominent men's teams.

But the women's team is different. There is no priority starter according to the world ranking. According to the men's standard, Jeon Ji-hee could be selected as the representative without taking the lead. However, he had to compete in line with other players.

In this area, Jun Ji-hee appeals to her somewhat injustice. Kim Hyung-seok, manager of POSCO Energy, said, “The domestic top rankers are not able to compete in the world championships.”

On the other hand, Yoo Nam-gyu, the coach of the women's national team (Samsung Life) explained, "The standard had to be different from the men's team. In reality, women's teams that were out of the Olympic medals had to compete through infinite competition.

Yoo said, "The women's team has not been successful in team games since the 2008 Beijing Olympics."

Korean Air Lee Eun-hye passed the national team squad for the Busan World Table Tennis Championships held at Jincheon Sports Village on 14th. (Jincheon = Yonhap News)
He said, "Because of this, as well as from March last year, he announced that he would select representatives through endless competition regardless of the world rankings." "It was to give tension to veterans and hope for young players. The women's skills have improved overall. "

Of course, the team selection method is decided by the association tendency. Yoo said, "Women's teams were also reviewed for the top ranking players in the world rankings, but the selection and recommendation players were finally decided on the trend."

In the midst of this, Jun Ji-hee was not selected as a recommended player. Two of the naturalized athletes' quarters have been filled through the selection. Choi Hyo-ju and Lee Eun-hye were chosen first.

Therefore, the Association selected Seo Hyo-won and Shin Yu-bin as the recommended players. An official of the association explained, "Hyo-won, a defensive archer, has strength in European players."

Yoo said, "It's a pity that Jeon Hee couldn't be elected." But he failed to pass two chances, and the natural entrepreneurs were chosen first. " The selected ping pong team will compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Team World Preliminary Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal on the 22nd and will be in Busan World Championships in March.

Maximum 2 naturalized players is BS to me. What if the 3 players won from the internal selection competition are all naturalized?

It is stupid to select Shin over Jeon as the Korean women’s team will suffer in the seeding without Jeon.

Apparently, Yoo Nam-kyu (main coach for the Korean Women's Team) has resigned and is replaced by Chu Kyo-sung (two times WTTC Men's Team bronze medalist in 1995 and 1997). While the ostensible reason cited for You leaving is "personal", other sources claim that his (over)emphasis on endless competition among the Korean women had led to serious arguments with an unspecified player in the training hall. Since then, communication with the player(s) has been difficult which ultimately led to his departure.

So, politics has led to the current line-up for WTTTC and Olympics qualifications?

I would not be suprised if this is the pattern going foward. Repeated failure under pressure is not looked kindly upon by the CNT.

WCQ is the promising youngster being groomed as the next generation after FZD (though their ages are honestly not that far apart), whereas LGY sorta has the aura of "well we tried him, but he was no good" around him.

So unless LGY finds and capitalises on the opportunity to prove himself on a big occasion, he's likely going to get overlooked on the things CNT truly value, even if his level of play might be slightly higher than WCQ (debatably).

That’s a breaking news. Apparently there were big arguments between Jeon Jihee and Yoo Nam Kyu after Jeon was not selected for WTTTC, and Yoo said only the WTTTC players will be the candidates for the Olympic Games. And looks like the Korean Table Tennis Association tends to support Jeon over Yoo. I can understand the Korean Table Tennis Association because they need Jeon in the team for the seeding.

I think the part that only the trials athletes will be Olympics candidates is the sticking point and makes absolutely no sense given the issues in play. I suspect there is something about naturalization that is not being discussed straightforwardly.

Determination of disciplinary action and level after confirming facts

(Seoul = Yonhap News)
Ahn Hong-suk = The Korean Table Tennis Association (Chairman Yoo Seung-min), who suffered a measles after a voluntary resignation of former South Korean national team coach Yu Nam-kyu, decided to open the Sports Fair Committee (Chairman Lee Jang-ho).

The Ping-Pong Association announced on the 23 that it had submitted the 'Recording Studio' case between former coach Yoo and former national representative Jeon Ji-hee (POSCO Energy) to the Sports Fair Committee.

The Sports Fair Committee, which is made up of outside personnel, will hold a meeting on the 31st to check the facts and decide whether or not to discipline.

According to ping pong officials, Yoo emphasized "infinite competition'' to achieve results at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and struggled with some top-ranked players over training courses and games.

In November last year, Jeon Ji-hee, who had a conflict with director Yoo at the training site, recorded the conversation and submitted it to the table tennis association.

Yoo eventually resigned in December of the same year, and the Ping Pong Association handed over the women's national team bachelor to Chuk-seong Geumcheon-gu Office.

The Ping-Pong Association held several meetings to seek solutions to the case, but in order to ensure maximum fairness, the Ping-Pong Association decided to entrust the Sports Fair Committee, which is made up of outside legal experts.

Park Chang-ik, vice chairman of the Ping-Pong Association, said, “As a result of listening to Yoo and Jeon Ji-hee's opinions, there was a gap between them. I'm handling the case. "

Yeah, saw reports about "recordings" and possibility of 'blackmailing' recently too although I'm curious as to what they actually contain beyond what was reported. Not sure that Yoo emphasising the need for endless competition is grounds for any disciplinary action tbh.

SUH Hyowon disappointed at the OQT, losing to KIM Song I and then to KIM Nam Hae.

I was a big fan of her, but she's alas already well past her prime. I tend to agree that Korea must renew their line-up even if they don't have a great result in 2020, they must prepare for the future. Anyway it looks like they won't be at the Olympics now

That's going a bit far. They have a good draw to the final match at the Olympic Qualification.

Stray observation. The Japanese men's team for WTTTC2020 was as follows:

But if you look at the ITTF entry list now, it becomes:

HARIMOTO Tomokazu
JIN Takuya
MIZUTANI Jun
MORIZONO Masataka
NIWA Koki

All because Uda lost in the prelims of German Open?

I think the name list of the Japanese men’s team and women’s are not updated yet.

Looking at the prospectus, the final entry deadline was Jan 17 while the All Japan Championship only finished on Jan 19. That means JNT didn’t know who would be the champion back then when they submitted their entry. But modification of entries is allowed between Jan 18 and Mar 21. So I believe JNT will modify it before Mar 21.

I wish the ITTF would do it the old way, where they publish the excel file in which they keep a column of "last updated".

The new way sucks royally. It's hard to keep track of changes as they replace them completely instead of leaving them there but grayed/crossed out.

----------
Anyway, always check the official JTTA site where they announce lineups/changes. They announced the official lineup on Jan 27, the day before German Open.

Poor Jeon Jihee. KNT didn’t even apply her for any women double or mix double in German Open and Qatar Open. Looks like they don’t plan to select Jeon Jihee for Tokyo 2020 either. Not sure if those applications were decided by Yoo Nam Kyu or the new coach Chu Kyo Sung.

Looks like KNT is preparing to send Suh Hyowon, Choi Hyojoo and Shin Yubin for Tokyo 2020?

This is so weird. She’s a National Champion, also the highest ITTF ranked Korean woman, has been in Korea since age 16(2011), naturalized, qualifies for, and with Olympic and multiple WTTC experience, even knocked off Chen Meng in T2, but not chosen for the National team. Not even in the Opens.
Wasn’t there supposed to be a hearing regarding her dispute with the resigned coach end of January? What came of it?

Aftertaste bitter Yoo Nam-kyu

End of recording studio situation of table tennis bee sting

The recording studio conflict between colleague and player of Korean women's table tennis national team was over. Former national team coach (Samsung Life) voluntarily resigned, and Jun Ji-hee, a naturalized player, was punished.

The Korea Table Tennis Association held a sports fair committee (Chairman Lee Jang-ho) at the Olympic Parktel in Bangi-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of December. As a result, reprimands were finally punished.

According to Article 6 of the National Team Selection Regulations (Maintaining Duty of Duty and Dignity), the National Team athletes must maintain their social responsibility and morality, refraining from degrading their dignity as a representative of the country. " But Jeon Ji-hee's act of recording conversations with the national team leader is to break the trust between the player and the leader. ”

Jeon Ji-hee recorded the remarks of Yoo Yoo's remarks during his training last year without his consent. Afterwards, he filed a complaint, submitting part of the recording to the association, saying that he was harmed. Director Yoo expressed his willingness to resign in November last year, and was resigned last month after officially submitting his resignation in late December.

The Association held a Committee on Improving Performance to find a solution to the conflict between the two, but failed to conclude. The association said, "It was a sensitive issue with the human rights of athletes as well as the leader." "We suggested to the Korean Sports Association to resolve this issue through the FTC."

In the end, the FTC decided to reprimand the lightest disciplinary charges against Jeon. Initially, the FTC reviewed Jeon Hee's six-month suspension. After six months of disciplinary action, Jun Ji-hee will not be able to attend the Tokyo Olympics in July.

However, the disciplinary level was lowered during the discussion. FTC said, "Jeon Ji-hee acquired Korean nationality and contributed to the advancement of the position, including the 2014 Incheon Asian Games Bronze Medal and the 2017 Summer Universiade Gold Medal. "We have reduced our discipline in consideration of our back."

Jeon Hee-hee visited Samsung Life Gymnasium of Yoo's team in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do on the 11th before the FTC. Kim Hyung-suk, manager of POSCO Energy, also accompanied. At this time, Jun Ji-hee apologized to Yu, saying, "I have been misunderstood." The Association confirmed this from both sides and informed the Fair.

The situation is over, but a bitter aftertaste of the reality of Korean women's table tennis remains. Some veteran players, including Jeon Ji-hee, attempted to overturn in response to the coach's coaching method, but they turned their heads in amazement at the backlash of public opinion about 'secret recording'.

Athletes who shared their opinions with Jeon Ji-hee are Seo Hyo-won (Korean Horse Racing Association) and Yang Ha-eun (POSCO Energy). Before Yoo's appointment in March last year, he was almost intimately attached to the Taegeuk mark. However, when Yu declared the women's national team competition without veterans' concern, their dissatisfaction arose and eventually recorded. In fact, Jeon Ji-hee was eliminated from the national team last month and failed to qualify for the Olympics.

Yoo said, "The women's national team's international competitiveness has fallen since the 2008 Beijing Olympics." Still, some players tried to change the atmosphere by showing a rather uneasy attitude that 'I'm playing on the national team.' "As a result of the positive competition, we have confidence that juniors such as table tennis Shin Dong-bin (to be joined by Korean Air) can go to the international competition."

Of course, Yoo, who must lead the national team, is not completely free from the responsibility of the situation. Yoo's remarks were said to include breaking the player's morale or discriminating against his team. Yoo argued, "You need a carrot and a whip to pull the player," he said. "It's a way to focus on training." But Jeon Ji-hee and other players were hurt.

The parties are in a position to follow the FTC's decision. But it's not entirely out of emotion. Yoo said, "I don't think I've recovered my honor." But "I'm the only one missing from the national team." "I didn't want to receive the apology from Jeon Hee and the end of the player's life on the big side, but when I came to see the day before the fair, I doubted the authenticity," he said.

Jeon Ji-hee is saving her words by sweeping her chest in retribution. Kim Hyung-seok said, "It's a pity that Yoo put the national team's baton off, but fortunately, the misunderstanding was resolved late."

Yoo replied, "If all the table tennis players are watching this situation, and if it doesn't get too hard, what kind of leader will teach them properly?" I will do it. " The FTC said on the day that it would recommend enacting a code of ethics for leaders and players so that this will not happen again in the future.

Jun Ji-hee “Sorry for the Director”… Former Director Yu Nam-kyu “Accepted Apple”
Newsis input 2020-02-12 18:13 edit 2020-02-12 18:13

Referred to by the Sports Fair Commission as a recording case at the end of last year

The misunderstanding was resolved through a confusing conversation between the women's table tennis Ace Jeon-hee (POSCO ENERGY) and former director Nam Yu-kyu, who had been referred to the Sports Fair Committee due to a conflict during the training.

Yoo met with reporters before attending the 3rd Korea Table Tennis Association Sports Fair Committee at the Seoul Olympic Parktel in Bangi-dong, Bangpa-dong, Songpa-gu on the 12th.

It was late last year that Yoo and Jeon Ji-hee's conflict surfaced. Jeon Ji-hee recorded the instructions of Yoo, who was holding the women's national team baton, without permission, and submitted the file to the Korea Table Tennis Association as if he felt unfair.

Yoo left the national team after resigning after receiving news that Jeon Ji-hee was dissatisfied with his style. Jeon Ji-hee also had to return the Taegeuk Mark as he was eliminated from the World Championships.

Jeon Hee-hee apologized for the recent situation with his team manager POSCO ENERGY Kim Hyung-suk, who visited Samsung Life Ping Pong with coaches. Jeon Ji-hee and Yoo took some sediments through a two-hour conversation.

Jun Ji-hee said, “I seem to have some misunderstandings. Yesterday, I apologized to Yoo, ”he said.“ I was a little anxious and confused rather than complained. ”

Yoo said, “Jeon Ji-hee said, 'I didn't want the director to quit.' I apologize, but I tried to do well in the world competition and the Olympics, but it hurts me. Jeon Ji-hee said that she was sorry for that. ”

Yoo also said, “I personally interviewed Jeon Ji-hee twice. I only remember it twice. I didn't say anything so much, but I wonder why it was. ”“ I felt like I quickly resigned as the national team coach. ”

An official of the Korea Table Tennis Association, who heard the recording, said, "You may have a problem in speaking, but there was no sexual harassment or verbal abuse at all."

Yoo also talked several times to raise the mentality of athletes who settle for reality, but emphasized that he did not commit any violent acts in the process.

“I have been aware of the reasons why the women's team is not performing well for a long time with the men's team,” said Yoo. “The biggest thought was to realize the players' perception that they had to be me.” “The coaching method is a little different for different directors. "I'm a tiger teacher in the field, but I'm really comfortable outside like a father."

On the other hand, Kim, who accompanied Jeon Ji-hee, said, “There are stories that Jeon-hee (the world's highest ranking) did it because he resisted infinite competition. Jeon Ji-hee is also accepting the elimination of the World Championships. I want to correct the misunderstanding. ”

Director Yoo Jun Ji-hee attended the Sports Fair Committee and clarified the processes that took place.

The Sports Fair Commission plans to combine disciplinary statements and recording files submitted by Jeon Ji-hee to determine whether or not to discipline.

  《SPOTV NEWS》

Outbreak of new pneumonia in Busan, South Korea
World Table Tennis Championships may be forced to postpone

On the afternoon of February 24th, a number of sports associations in South Korea met to postpone adjustments to future events or play without spectators.

According to Korean media such as "SPOTV NEWS" and "MK Economic News", the World Table Tennis Championships originally scheduled for March 22-29 in Busan are likely to be postponed.

"SPOTV NEWS" said: 3 days ago, Liu Chengmin, chairman of the Korea Table Tennis Association, and Steve Denton, CEO of the ITTF, held a press conference, saying that the World Table Tennis Championships will be held normally, but now it has shown great variable. At that time, there were only two confirmed cases of pneumonia in Busan, but 19 confirmed cases have appeared, and the status of the population to be isolated is unknown.

ITTF CEO Denton once said on the 21st: "Although the desire for normal competition is strong, other conditions must be considered when the situation deteriorates sharply." It is said that 83 countries originally registered for the competition More than half of the associations have said they will withdraw from the World Table Tennis Championships or will not be able to play in Korea because of the government's travel ban. ITTF believes that players must not be allowed to compete in fear and uneasiness.

"MK Economic News" reported in the afternoon: "At the press conference on the 21st, the organizing committee stated that it would continue the game as usual. However, the situation has deteriorated sharply on the afternoon of the 24th. At present, 38 people have been diagnosed in Busan, and the city government designated With the Asia-Pacific Sanatorium as an isolation hospital, isolation and treatment of confirmed patients ... The extension of the World Table Tennis Championships seems inevitable. "

At present, the K-League, Handball League, Basketball League, Tennis Tournament, etc. have been postponed or suspended. (Zhou Chao)

[Table Tennis] Postponed Busan World Championship, 2021 Group + Individual Integration Competition?
Article input 2020. 05. 04 13:01

The groundbreaking proposal that the Busan World Table Tennis Championships (group), which was postponed twice due to the “corona crisis,” will be held in March next year in conjunction with the 2021 Houston event (individual) is being discussed.

On the 4th, a senior official of the Korea Table Tennis Association (Chairman Yoo Seung-min) said, “The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), Busan Metropolitan City and the Korea Table Tennis Association have a firm principle in regard to the Busan World Championships. After overcoming the corona crisis, it must be opened. And one of the specific methods is to combine the Houston event in 2021 and hold an integrated event in Busan. ”

The 2020 Busan World Table Tennis Championships, where Korea won the first title, was originally scheduled to be held in Busan, Korea on March 22nd to 29th. However, due to the worldwide Corona 19 infection, it was postponed to June (21-28) first and September (27- October 4) second.

The problem is that it cannot be held even in September. Although Korea was in a calm state due to the Corona 19 crisis, the spread trend continues throughout the world. Unless vaccines or treatments are developed, it is difficult to hold a global sports event where people from all over the world gather together. As a result, the Busan World Table Tennis Championship is being reviewed for the third postponement in late 2020, but early 2021.

In the midst of this, the 2021 American World Table Tennis Championships (individuals) emerged as a topic. The tournament will take place on June 21-27, 2021 at the Toyota Arena in Houston. For reference, the World Table Tennis Championship, which began in 1926, was held every year until 1957, and the holding period was changed to 2 years afterwards. From the Paris Convention in 2003, individual and team events were separated. . 2020 Busan (group) and 2021 Houston (individual) also follow this method.

However, for the first time in the United States, and for the first time since the 1939 Egyptian Games, this Houston World Table Tennis Championship, held on a continent other than Europe and Asia, is struggling to review cancellation or postponement with Corona 19.

First, as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was postponed for one year from July 23 to August 8, 2021, the gap with the Houston World Table Tennis Championships was less than a month. It is a tight schedule for athletes who have finished the world championship to play the Olympics again in four weeks. In the meantime, a plan to either pull to March or postpone after the Olympics is also proposed, but this is also not surprising because the 18,000-seat Toyota Arena is home to the American Professional Basketball (NBA) Houston Rockets.

Therefore, the International Table Tennis Federation, the Korean Table Tennis Association, and the City of Busan are considering holding an integrated World Table Tennis Championship in Busan in March 2021, ahead of the Olympic Games, which brought together groups and individuals. This also has the advantage that if the event of Corona 19 continues until the first half of 2021, the holding time can be delayed in the second half.

The 2021 Busan “Integrated” World Table Tennis Championship is also aligned with the ITTF's strategy to make a leap into a full-scale major professional sport. ITTF has a plan to open the 'Grand Smashes' like the grand slam competitions of golf and tennis by promoting only world championships in the future and activating its own world tour. The Busan Integrated World Championship is the catalyst for ITTF tournament innovation.

Chairman Yoo Seung-min, who is also an IOC member and executive member of the ITTF, said, “We are considering various measures while watching the Corona 19 incident. The connection with the Houston Convention is one of them. What is certain is that the World Championship will be held in Busan. ” Yoo Byeong-cheol Sports Specialist

‘March → June → September → Year-end or early next year?’

The opening of the 2020 Busan World Table Tennis Championships (group competition), which was postponed twice in the aftermath of Corona 19, is expected to be postponed again.

According to the table tennis industry on the 3rd, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is pursuing a plan to postpone the Busan World Table Tennis Championships again at the end of this year or early next year. Corona 19's global pandemic is not expected to improve until September when the Busan World Championship is scheduled to take place.

Corona 19 held in September

Re-predominance in prevention of participating countries

ITTF decides to open conduct in June

An official from the Korea Table Tennis Association said, “The ITTF executives agree that Korea has no problems with hosting the World Championships in Busan because it is an exemplary country for corona defense.” The predominance is that the re-acting situation is very strong. ”

ITTF executives are strongly considering the end of the year as the new opening date, but are also considering ways to delay the competition to “in the first half of next year” for more stable preparation.

Originally, in the first half of next year, an individual world championship was scheduled to be held in Houston, USA. However, because the US table tennis world wants to postpone or cancel the competition for reasons of anti-corona 19 prevention, it will not be a hindrance to holding the Busan World Championship in the first half of next year.

The ITTF recently held an executive committee and decided to decide whether to postpone the Busan World Championship or not, and the opening schedule when it was postponed in June.

ITTF decided to postpone indefinitely all the organizers scheduled to be held by July 30th.

This world championship, which is also a wish of the Korean table tennis world, which is also held in Busan for the first time in Korea, has already been postponed twice in Corona 19.

It was originally scheduled to open on March 22 and will be held at BEXCO Stadium in Busan until 29, but was postponed from June 21 to 28 in the aftermath of Corona 19 and postponed again from September 27 to October 4. By Kim Jin-sung, reporter paperk @

Korea First World Table Tennis Championship, eventually postponed to next year

The world's first table tennis championship (group competition) was held again in Korea.

The organizer of the tournament said on the 5th, "Hana Bank 2020 Busan World Table Tennis Championships will be postponed once again." The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has asked the organization to postpone the competition scheduled for September 27th to October 4th.

Initially, this tournament was scheduled to be held at the special stadium in BEXCO, Busan in March. However, with the spread of Corona 19, it was postponed to June and then postponed to September. Eventually, with the third acting, this year's event was virtually futile.

The Federation also requested that a date be provided for the tournament to be held in the first half of 2021, given the current situation in which it is difficult for players to move to Corona 19. The Federation held a video executive committee on the 4th and made the decision.

Accordingly, the Organizing Committee will decide the date of the meeting after consulting with related organizations such as Busan, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and BEXCO. After that, the policy is to finalize the announcement of the conference period with the Federation.

The novel coronavirus spreading in South Korea now has its origin in Europe and the US, health authorities said Monday, and it is known to be six times as infectious as the original strain that emerged in China.

Sad. Can't see how any international events can start up anytime soon.

Soccer at least it's domestic leagues but events like TT which are world tours requiring international travel makes it hopeless atm. I sound bad, human life should be #1, but TT is a big passion and being locked up like this seeing what's happening without an end in sight you miss it even more.

Would be nice if solution does come about soon to recommence table tennis safely, even if play is in just 1 city and even if at expense viewers just paying one off fee to watch.

ITTF can't look too far ahead atm.
Too much happening, not enough enough progress and situation not improving.

You would think plenty tournaments right now in jeopardy between now and next year not just Houston World Championships.

Yes, but the USA has the unfortunate distinction right now of being the poorest performing country in terms of limiting the spread, so Houston 2021 comes into particular focus. Given the postponed Busan 2020 Teams WTTC and 2021 Olympics, 11 months out is not too far to start thinking about it. There are a full slate of other majors in 2021 (Team Cup, World Team Cup, Teams WTTC, Olympics), and the current Houston venue is also used by the NBA's Houston Rockets. Planning a re-scheduling and/or re-location is not something that can be done in just a few months.

I get it but think of it from CEO or ITTF President angle.

You have contracts/schedules in place, would be repercussions if made decision now and say situation is cleared say 6 months late? Personally I agree with you that USA is not location to be hosting the event, situation has worsened and no signs now of improvrment but can't make early decisions based on circumstances can't forsee.

Why do you think Olympics hasn't been cancelled? Contracts, sponsors, billions of dollars. Neither IOC or Japan want to make the call as whoever makes the call will have the cover the bill. This situation instead of cancelling I think Japan & IOC will negotiate to postpone til 2024, that's my opinion, they have bought themselves plenty of time, don't think either side keen to rush or push the event given the situation. Don't think France will object to postpone their games til 2028, don't think they have planned to far ahead.

ITTF has finally announced today that Japan Open will be canceled (https://www.ittf.com/2020/07/08/cancellation-2020-ittf-world-tour-japan-open/).

Speaking for the first time as WTT Council Chair, LGL says he will get in touch with WTT and ITTF to discuss about the possibility of resuming international competitions in China, which for whatever reason is not mentioned in the English version (https://www.ittf.com/2020/07/08/world-table-tennis-presented-africa/) of the article.

https://cn.ittf.com/2020/07/wtt%e9%9d%9e%e6%b4%b2%e8%ae%ba%e5%9d%9b%ef%bc%8c%e5%88%98%e5%9b%bd%e6%a2%81%e9%a6%96%e6%ac%a1%e4%bb%a5%e4%b8%96%e4%b9%92%e8%81%94%e7%90%86%e4%ba%8b%e4%bc%9a%e4%b8%bb%e5%b8%ad%e8%ba%ab%e4%bb%bd/

Maybe the US will get lucky and have defacto herd immunity and will be able to hold the event without restricting any country from coming?

On a more serious note, the whole coronavirus thing is vexing. This was a big event on the calendar of many TT enthusiasts and getting to see my idols live was a dream.

I understand there are contracts and agreements in place. However, a global pandemic makes negotiating or even getting out of those things easier than you may think. Especially when a great liability is posed to the venue hosting the event. As I said, 11 months out is definitely not too soon to foresee the way this may be going, especially with how packed 2021 is as far as major TT tournaments, a decision will have to be made sooner rather than later.

The Olympics is something of a completely different scale and proportion than the World Table Tennis Championships. These things cannot even be compared.

I don't disagree at all. Honestly I can't think of a venue or a city in the world right now that is capable of hosting any Table Tennis event, one that can guarantee the safety of players, officials and fans.

Im just saying decisions like these aren't easy and full diplomatc approaches are taken. Not sure when these contracts were signed that there was a 'pandemic clause' added, can guarantee now everyone moving forward that does get signed will have one.

I ask you, if you had to make decision now to move 2021 World Championships, where would you move it to? If I asked ITTF CEO think he would laugh at me.

• The Hana Bank 2020 World Team Table Tennis Championships in Busan, Korea Republic, will be staged between 28 February and 7 March 2021.

• Due to decreasing probability of international events being staged according to the original plan in 2020, the ITTF will therefore attempt to stage “bubble” or regionally based events during the remainder of the 2020 calendar, working around ever-changing international travel restrictions.

One thing that really caught my eye watching it live is how big the Chinese and South Korea players are compared to the rest of the Asian players from say Japan and Taiwan.

Chuang Chih-yuan walked past me and his tiny and I'm not a big guy. Xu Xin and other Chinese men massive. South Korean men moster size. I think as game has evolved power game has been key for countries like Sweden and Germany being able to stay consistently in team top 10 rankings being able to over power most other countries.

Even the ladies from China.... Chen Meng, Ding Ning, Wang Manyu big size. Japanese girls are dolls in comparison Hirano, Kasumi, Mima, Shibata tiny girls.

Absolutely. The South Korean team highly emphasizes physical training, maybe even more so than the Chinese National Team, so those guys are in crazy good physical condition.

Most of the CNT men are surprisingly large in person, with the exception of Lin Gaoyuan. Ma Long in particular is more physically imposing than he looks on camera.

What I meant in the previous post is more the speed of the ball. Even the highest quality cameras drastically reduce how rocket-like the balls truly are in person.

Why not?

I think only issues will be logistics getting players to and from their countries. Do Qatar want players form US coming in like Lily Zhang? Or from Brazil Hugo Calderano? Could be a new location descrimination.

Looking at the current situation in Tokyo and the world, it seems likely that the postponed Tokyo Olympics next year will also be canceled.
When that happens, the players who are now practicing desperately for the Olympics are definitely too miserable.
However, it seems that many players are starting to think that there is a high possibility that it will be canceled.
It seems that it will be impossible to hold the Olympics because it seems that vaccines and medicines will only be completed after next autumn.
If that happens, Hirano will have it the worst. Unlike Ishikawa and Ito who have already participated in the Olympics,
if Hirano can't participate in the Olympics this time, she may end up without playing the Olympics for a lifetime.
4 years later, in addition to Ito the Great Demon King, the Olympics in Paris will also see Nagasaki and Kihara rising.
It's possible that Hayata will be even stronger, so it wouldn't be strange for Hirano to drop out.

Mr. Miyazaki's Twitter has foreshadowed a major announcement tomorrow with criticisms in mind??
Is there a change in the Olympic team??
Is there an alternative tournament??

You think if Olympics are held, would just be singles?

Team and XD would be scrapped?

Janard

Maybe it is Mizutani retiring and the end of Japan's strongest XD pair till date. His recent social media posts are all about his mobile games and woodwork. Lol ~

But re-starting tournaments/matches with audience is the most likely outcome IMO.

Could just be doubles being allowed at NTC...Miyazaki has a history of blowing things out of proportion.

Horrible times. Feel sorry for the players. Some need donations. We all have family and friends impacted by this situation too so would be difficult donating big amounts with so much uncertainty.

Yeah still for a say 4 week event to try fit in say equivilant of a whole year's worth of tournaments to get rankings sorted and proceeds go towards players and ITTF. This proposal by the day looks more hopeless as situation across the globe worsens.

Sad reality is Table Tennis & global touring sports might have to have a hiatis for a while until a solution can be found. Honestly not sure how Tokyo can host Olympics 2021 like this.

Wonder what huge announcement the JTTA has planned for tomorrow.

https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/cache.php?img=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tabletennisdaily.com%2Fforum%2Fcache.php%3Fimg%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fi.ibb.co%252FQcSbhzG%252F007u-CPr-Ely1ggpj288j2rj30gh04fweu.jpg (https://imgbb.com/)

Apparently, the big announcement by Miyazaki is about the 2020 Japan All-Star Dream Match to be held in September. The idea was actually first brought up on May 26, 2020 by T-League Chairman, Koji Matsushita. They initially discussed ideas such as mixed gender matchups, "OB & OG" participation (literally translates to "Old Boy & Old Girl," and refers to former men's and women's members of the Japanese National Team. e.g. Koji Matsushita and Ai Fukuhara) and participation of the current Olympic Team. They even floated around the idea of having doubles matches with doubles pairs composing of 1 current player and 1 former player. This was to make up for the cancellation of the 19-20 T-League Final and to create excitement for T-League Season 3.

In June, Matsushita retired as T-League Chairman and it seems that Miyazaki, being the assistant T-League President, was the one continuing this project. The 2020 Japan All-Star Dream Match to be held in September will be a TEAM competition, but the team composition hasn't been decided yet. Miyazaki said it could be the Japan 2020 WTTC team vs the best T-League players who didn't make the WTTC team, or the Japan Men's team vs the Japan Women's team, or a combination of these ideas. However, there will be limitations on the participants of the event. First, they plan to limit the players to 20 or less. Second, there will be no international players in this event due to travel restrictions to Japan. Last, it seems unlikely that the OB and OG players (retired players) will participate. As of now, only Masataka Morizono has confirmed his participation, but T-League is prioritizing getting the Top Players on board (Ito and Sato in particular since they don't participate in T-League.) I think getting these top players is essential to make this event even more interesting and attractive to fans.

Miyazaki said that 3 Million Yen had to be raised to cover venue set-up costs and video production costs for the event. Miyazaki said they don't really need to raise this much money for the event to push through, and they could have opted to make the event pay-per-view. However, in order to truly promote table tennis worldwide, the 3 Million Yen needed to be raised in order to make the event accessible to everyone for free. Incredibly, they were able to raise the 3 Million Yen needed in less than 6 hours from the announcement, so I'm highly optimistic this event will push through, and that we will all be able to watch for free come September.

Miyazaki said that his announcement may bring about criticism. Some may be wary of exposing these players to infection in an unnecessary event. Some have doubts of whether a man vs woman match will be competitive enough to attract attention. Others may criticize the raising of funds for sports and entertainment purposes over humanitarian purposes. However, I honestly have nothing to critique, and I'm just excited because the concept of this event is unique and different from what we are used to seeing in table tennis. The lack of table tennis events in the world right now will only make this event more hyped.

I would like to see male vs top female Japanese players, particularly since many of the latter have male sparring partners. We've seen how the top Chinese women fared against the American men, assuming they went all out, and it seems like it could go either way.

WE NEED A BLOODY COMPETITION.
Stivelopper Dainton the very man to bury the sport deepgrave. Dainton goes all eager for money profit; and we, the many people of the sport , all eager for a blatant competition. Conquering a damned foe, we all want Japanese to cause Chinese overall upset , is somewhat a bloody warfare rather than a showman singing jinglebell song in public.

All these players around the globe not just for Table tennis but other sports could be preparing for something not bound to happen. Winter Olympics 6 months later, some countries may boycott as a sign of retaliation. I admire Mima response and positive outlook.

2021 World Championships in Houston
Alas, Houston has withdrawn from running the 2021 World Singles and Doubles Championships. (It would have been the first Worlds in the US.) I'm told it's not directly because of the pandemic, but because the Olympics in Japan are now scheduled to start July 23, 2021, which would be just after the Houston Worlds in June. (They would, in fact, be sandwiched between the World Team Championships in South Korea, which moved from 2020 to Feb. 28-Mar. 7, 2021, and the Olympics, and they'd no longer be the premier event of the year.) This was discussed at the July 13 USATT board meeting (held online on Zoom, which I attended). Here is the USATT minutes page, and here is a direct link to the minutes of that meeting. Here's the pertinent info - "Ms. Sung" is USATT CEO Virginia Sung:

"Ms. Sung noted that two very important factors will impact the financial analysis for USATT. The first is the decision with respect to the 2021 Table Tennis World Championships, which were scheduled for Houston, Texas in June of 2021. However, Houston has withdrawn its offer to serve as a host the World Championships, and USATT is still awaiting the official decision of the ITTF as to how the international governing body for table tennis would like to proceed in this matter."

"Ms. Sung stated that there are several possibilities of how things will proceed, including the possibility that the ITTF will honor the contract that is already in place – and make the corresponding payments due to USATT under that contract – on the presumption that the US will host the World Championships at some future date. There is also the possibility that USATT will work out a different arrangement with the ITTF for a future World Championships in the United States."

I know that USATT is now actively looking for another site, but I have no idea if they would be able to do it now in 2021. We'll see. Alas, I was hoping to attend and do coverage, and then some sightseeing.

As I noted in a previous blog, I was supposed to go to the Olympics in Japan this year to do table tennis coverage for USA (both USA and international teams), and would be there now - but then the pandemic came. I may be going next year instead.

4) Equipment
• The equipment department is also being professionalised with a new office opened five
months ago, having two full time and one part time staff members. There is cooperation
between the department staff and the equipment committee in all aspects.
• A pilot phase was successfully completed to check true rubber thickness of players on
dismantled blades. This will help in future development of new more accurate devices for
racket control.
• Intensive cooperation is being done with ball manufacturers to ensure consistent quality
of balls in all ITTF events.
• Coloured rubbers have been defined and will be approved soon.
• Close to 2000 products are currently on the ITTF approval list, and this is still increasing.
• The revenue from equipment approvals and testing has increased the last two years by
an average of 20%.
• All technical leaflets are being updated and databases are under development for all
approved products.
• Closer monitoring of unauthorised use of the ITTF logo and proper action against non-
compliant companies is strictly undertaken.

...

EQUIPMENT COMMITTEE (Paul Schiltz)
Report to the AGM
Document D1

...

Approved/authorised Equipment – Evolution since 2014 – Label “ITTF approved”

...

The ITTF has accredited independent testing institutes, which provide the measurements, run the tests,
verify the declarations of the suppliers about their equipment and also advise ITTF technically. Together
with Claudia Herweg, the EqC experts evaluate the transmitted results and decide about the approvals /
authorisations. The related administrative work lies on the shoulders of ITTF staff, presently Emese Barsai.
The triangular cooperation, involving external professionals, ITTF professional staff and experts from the
field-of-play, has created and strengthened the label “ITTF approved”, which is nowadays worldwide
recognised, also by governmental and educational bodies, as a guarantee for high competition quality and
for safety. The EqC recommends to keep this system, which works well, as it permits fruitful, multiple input.
However, improvements are necessary:
- An EqC member and expert shall fulfil criteria of a technical, scientific or research background, and
be able to dedicate time enough to his/her task, which he/she shall conduct in a strictly neutral way.
“Political” members and persons strongly linked to manufacturers shall not serve.
- An ITTF Equipment Department shall not only take care of all administrative and financial aspects,
but also initiate and coordinate efforts for a coherent, fair and transparent equipment policy. Important
progress has been made in 2019.
- The representatives of the suppliers, shall provide advice about all aspects related to TT equipment,
as it already happens through the FIT Working Groups. The decisions of ITTF shall stay with the ITTF,
and shall remain independent and transparent, to serve table tennis as a sport.
- Legal and marketing aspects, modern and complete information have to be considered, developed
and integrated.

Racket coverings, Racket control after the match
Thanks to the deep knowledge and personal involvement of Claudia Herweg,
- Deadlines and procedures for the authorisation of racket coverings shall be better adapted to the
needs of players and manufacturers.
- Authorisation criteria, especially for re-tests and market survey, will be reviewed.
Rubber suppliers with wrong claims or illegal products were forced to comply with the rules, and some
products were deleted from the lists.
Racket dismantling after the last match safely detects post-treatment of blades and illustrates how easily
it is to deceive the ITTF devices. It is not possible to conclude with certainty. Finally, the EqC does not yet
propose changes of the rules and methods of racket control. Nearly all players understand and accept well
such control, it is positive news.

...

Good governance, data – bases, information on the ITTF equipment page

...

The EqC considers that for all equipment data-bases with relevant information should exist, and that the
available pictures of approved or authorised equipment should be put back to the related lists of the ITTF
web page.

Research: general – new materials for blades – friction - balls
The EqC recommends to join the ITF (Tennis) Technical Centre in London for guiding research before
implementation of equipment changes, and not set up an own expensive centre.
A British University was entrusted with the research about “new materials for blades”; it did not deliver
useful results.
The order for building the device measuring the frictional properties of a table surface, and hopefully also
of the (ageing) ball surface, finally was passed to a German company; we are waiting for the product.

Technical leaflets – changes and improvements to be implemented
T2 – Net assemblies: legalise good, but illegal net structures and advertising, test net sturdiness (advice
of the testing Institute has been taken), reorganise presentation of TL.
T3 – Balls: unused production-tolerances are cut off, this after intensified re-testing and a detailed
statistical analysis, celluloid-free balls only (the last celluloid ball will run out by end of 2020), presentation
of document.
T4 – Racket coverings: new authorisation deadlines and procedures shall be integrated to be legal, new
colour ranges.
BoD is the constitutional body for the final and prior decision of contents of the technical leaflets; layout
and design into well – presented manuals shall be entrusted to Equipment Committee and Department,
with the substantial expert help of professional designers.

Colours
Two independent approaches permitted to propose acceptable bright colour ranges for racket coverings:
opinion poll based on colour tiles (Pantone) and expert advice from ESN based on rubber samples
produced for this purpose. Both added the colour violet to the EqC’s proposed red, green, blue, purple;
violet tones which can also be considered as bright. The definition of the colour domains required much
time and energy in order to avoid errors and not to succumb to personal requests for non-bright colours.
Contributions from players and from a movie were valued.
Therefore, the documentation for the resolution about a yellow ball was postponed; a strategy will be
established in Busan to hopefully convince the AGM that yellow is a very good option.

Equipment for the World Championships and the Olympic/Paralympic Games 2020
Tables and their nets have been inspected and approved. At the moment of this report, other test results
are expected soon.

Blade authorisation procedure
After many years of fruitless discussions, a concrete project has now been drafted. It still needs discussion
and refinement before possible agreement and implementation.

Yes, for the most part, judging from what happened in 2019 and early 2020. They'll have a much harder time than Hirano, Ito and Hayata when they displaced Ishikawa in 2017, 2018, and 2020. Miwa Harimoto will turn 16 in 2024. This is essentially the Warring States period.

Thanks Zeio, for outlining the match format for the 2020 Japan All-Star Match! If it's okay, I would just like to add on to your post to further clarify the format to the readers. I will be using most of what Zeio has written in his post #136 of this thread, so full credit goes to Zeio.

The 2020 Japan All-Star Match will be held on September 14, 2020, 6pm Japan Time. The TV Tokyo Table Tennis Youtube Channel will livestream the match. The Full Match will also be uploaded on the TV Tokyo Table Tennis Youtube Channel right after the live stream, so those who cannot watch live can just watch the replay. https://www.youtube.com/user/tabletennis

The tournament will be a two-part system. The first part will be "Japan 2020 WTTC representatives vs. Japan T-League representatives (These comprise of Japanese players who didn't make the 2020 WTTC team)." The second part will be "Japan Men's WTTC representatives vs. Japan Women's WTTC representatives". The format of each match is as follows:

Part 1 Japan 2020 WTTC representatives vs. Japan T-League representatives

Total of 9 Singles Matches
Each singles match is a one-set showdown. First to 11 points wins (no deuce).
Five singles matches will be Men's Singles (Since the 2020 WTTC team has 5 male representatives while the T-League Team only has 4 male representatives, the T-League team can select a male representative to play in two matches).
Four singles matches will be Women's Singles (Since the T-League team has 4 female representatives while the 2020 WTTC team only has 3 female representatives, the 2020 WTTC team can select a female representative to play in two matches).
No Timeouts
No changing ends
Player order and matchups will be announced on the day itself

Part 2 Japan's WTTC Male Representatives vs. Japan's WTTC Female Representatives (Battle of the Sexes)

Team Match with at least 4 singles games being played.
Each singles game will be played until 11 points.
Irregular Match Format similar to King of the Court. The team who loses the point has to rotate its player while the team who won the point keeps its player on the court. To Illustrate:

Male team (Rotation is Harimoto, Niwa, Mizutani, Uda, Morizono) vs. Female team (Rotation is Ishikawa, Hayata, Nagasaki).
The first point in Game 1 will be Harimoto vs Ishikawa. If Ishikawa wins the point, the Men's team will rotate while the Women's team will keep the player who won the point. The next point will now be Niwa vs Ishikawa. If Ishikawa wins the point again, Niwa rotates out and the next point will be between Mizutani and Ishikawa since only the losing team rotates. It's only when Ishikawa loses the point that Hayata will be rotated in her place.
This format allows all players to play since there was an initial problem of having too many men and too few women participants.

As an initial handicap, the Women's team will start off Game 1 with a 4-point head start. Furthermore, for all points, the female player will be the one who serves. *However, the organizers have the discretion to change the handicap system for the succeeding game to ensure competitiveness of future games depending on the results of the initial handicap in game 1.

For example, if the female team easily wins game 1 against the men due to the handicap, the organizers can lessen the handicap and possibly allow the men to serve in game 2 to make the game more competitive. The organizers can also increase the handicap if the female team is still having a hard time coping against the men's team.

If after 4 games are played, the game count is tied at 2-2, 1 male and 1 female representative will play one a tie-breaker game until 11 points.

In this tie-breaker game, there will be no more rotation. This will be a standard one-set showdown between the one male and one female player to decide the winning team for Part 2.
Author's opinion: I'm probably 80-90% sure that the game count will be tied at 2-2 and that we'll have this tie-breaker game because the organizers have the discretion to adjust the handicap system to help ensure a tiebreaker game will be played. Since the All-Star Game is mainly for entertainment, and most fans probably want to see the tie-breaker, I have a feeling that the organizers will try to make this happen through the adjustment of the handicap system. After all, T-League reached 362% of their target monetary goal in the crowdfunding for the event, so they'll most likely try to give the fans what they want and paid for.

No timeouts
No changing ends (I'm assuming this is a safety measure for COVID-19, but if the players from both teams are rotating after every point, doesn't it kind of negate this safety measure? Haha.)

Lol. And if you include the 2020 WTTC Men's representatives in the mix, 7 out of the 8 players who will play in Part 2 of the 2020 Japan All-Star Match (Battle of the Sexes) will be lefty players, with Harimoto being the lone righty.

With the abundance of lefties, soon, gone will be the days where natural right-handed players train to play table tennis with their left hand. It might be the other way around in the future with natural left-handed players training to be righties in table tennis. Haha. ;)

Never knew Japan would be this "far-left." Rallys even published an article on that. Lefties in Japanese table tennis are heavily over-represented even compared to baseball and badminton.

Is that why she was classified as "T-League representative" instead? Because she's the ZYL of the Japanese women.

Also, I've noticed that you translated "日本代表男/女子" as "Japan's representatives" while apacible chose "Japan's WTTC M/F Representatives". Hmm? If it's indeed referring to Japan's representative as in national team representatives, then Kato is really the unwanted one ~

She is the poster girl on the crowdfunding page (https://greenfunding.jp/lab/projects/3850), along with Harimoto. As of April 1st, she's part of the 6-member national team. I guess they've always had her in mind to lead the opposing team. A chance to redeem/avenge herself?

The folks actually use the term "日本代表" interchangeably to refer to the national team (http://www.jtta.or.jp/player/tabid/110/Default.aspx) and/or team selection for WTTC/Olympics/World Cup/Asian Cup etc. Poor Kato sticking out like a sore thumb.

Establishment of ITTF Tribunal and ITTF Integrity Unit...????

https://www.ittf.com/2020/09/08/progress-highlighted-ittf-governance-video-conference/

https://youtu.be/HUf-vpqhlvY

One of the more notable part for me starts at the 32 minute mark of the video. It talks about AGM proposition 16 where JTTA proposed that the service rule be changed. The full text can be found on page 108 of this document: https://documents.ittf.sport/sites/default/files/public/2020-08/2020_AGM_documents_1.pdf and I have copied the relevant portions below:

Proposition 16 proposed by the Japan Table Tennis Association Effective 1st January 2021 (3/4 majority required):

"To amend 2.6.2:The server shall then project the ball near vertically upwards, without imparting spin, so that it rises at least
above their head height(instead of at least 16cm) after leaving the palm of the free hand and then falls without touching anything before being struck.”

”Rationale:To make clearer the point of decision on fault services. But this rule will not apply for playersof elderly person or players of age below 9 years of age, different rule shall be applied."

JTTA apparently forgot that some of the best servers on their team (e.g. Ito, Hayata, Hirano) have very effective shovel serves, and while their shovel serves generally comply with the 16cm rule, they do not consistently toss the ball above their head height when they do these shovel serves. It's like JTTA is trying to undermine their own team and get their own players faulted on their serves. Haha. I'm guessing that the proposed rule change by the JTTA might have been filed with the ITTF back when Japanese players were known for their high-toss serves such as when Fukuhara and Ishikawa were leading the team but it seems that majority of the team has shifted to mostly shovel serves. (Even Ishikawa is serving more shovel serves now).

Anyway, if you start watching from the 32 minute mark, it appears JTTA, realizing the potential danger of the passing of this new rule, sent a note to ITTF begging that if the rule change gets passed, that it apply the service rule change only in 2022, which is after the 2020+1 Olympics. If the service rule does get passed and ITTF is firm that it should be effective next year, a lot of players are going to have to adjust their serves just before the Olympics.

Lol. Wasn't JTTA also the one who suggested all the changes (size and material) to the ball?

Actually, is there consensus over what counts as "near vertical" tosses? I can't find any specifics in the ITTF handbook but the TTR/Hawk-eye technology seems to classify tosses within 30 degrees as legal?

In mixed doubles, men and women may play together, but men and women do not play in a singles format. Even more, it seems to be a valuable opportunity for the top players of the Japanese national team to play against each other, but Hayata Hina(Nippon Life), who boasts the most powerful hitting for women, said, "I want to feel the skill and tactics of male players. I'm looking forward to seeing how well my FH drive and power drive will work."

However, as a male player, it's only natural to win, so it seems that weird pressure will be applied. Niwa Koki(Svenson), the representative of the Tokyo Olympics, said, "I'm looking forward to playing against female players," but went on to say with a bitter smile, "I think it's a very disadvantageous condition (for boys), but I want to do my best to win."

Mizutani Jun(Kinoshita Group) made a "shutout" statement: "The special rules this time is that you will not be replaced unless points are lost, so I hope(without losing points) not to transfer to the surrounding players." Masataka Morizono(Bobson), who heard it nearby, replied, "Mizutani-san will win everything, so I'll leave it to you (LOL)."

The game ended so quickly. Harimoto won by using his BH only. I think he played 2 FHs the whole game.

I made a tally of all the individual points scored during the Girls vs Boys Team Match. Niwa dominated the scored sheet.
https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/cache.php?img=https%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FCeeYb9q.png

In other news, Mizutani pulled out of the event at the last minute and cited his poor physical condition as the reason. However, maybe it actually had to do with his "shutout statement" during the press conference a few days ago.

Mizutani Jun(Kinoshita Group) made a "shutout" statement: "There are special rules in the Boys vs Girls Match. You will be rotated out if you lose a point, so I hope not to concede any points to the girls. Masataka Morizono(Bobson), who heard it nearby, replied, "Mizutani-san will win everything, so I'll leave it to you (LOL)."

Zeio pulling out a post from 2014 by the same user. You really are a walking encyclopedia  My own success story was knowing FZD was the next big thing before the world knew about him, sadly I've got no online receipts

Interesting that Yu Kayama is now LYJ's practice partner. I watched some of his matches and it seems he didn't quite pan out, similarly to Yui Hamamoto. Do we know who his dad is, LYJ's coach?

Also, the shade being thrown at China in that Japan Times article (https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2014/06/13/olympics/joc-grooms-young-athletes-for-international-success-at-elite-academy/#.VGU5CslK-So) is tremendous:

It’s not necessarily misleading to say that talented and qualified adolescents from around the nation are brought in to develop into global-level athletes with the guidance of the top-level, qualified coaches and staff. But it doesn’t mean that these young athletes are treated without regard to their feelings or development.

“We don’t think that we’ll be able to produce the athletes that we aim to only by developing their athletic competitiveness,” Hirano says. “Conversely, in order to improve their athletic competitiveness, we have to develop their humanity.”

But according to Hirano, the JOC didn’t actively employ the examples of other countries when it founded the Elite Academy, because it wanted to have something that would fit into Japanese society.

And as much as the programs hope to foster future Olympic medalists, it doesn’t find value in creating sporting monsters.

So their future success is essentially put in their own hands, not the government or the JOC’s.

At the Elite Academy the student-athletes are required to cultivate three different abilities: athletic competitiveness, intellect and vitality.
Also, the Elite Academy has no intention of having its athletes neglect their academic workload.

Thanks for sharing. Hung Ka Tak was a huge prospect and seemingly disappeared out of nowhere. Apparently lost interest in playing?

Liu Gaoyang seems to have moved on as well, she did a brief stint in the 2. Bundesliga last year.

Hung has stopped playing to study to become a doctor or lawyer the last time I heard.

Liu Gaoyang went to study in the US in 2019.

Well, that post was what got me started following Hayata! Ito and Hirano were already making their ways up the ladder at the world stage. Compared to them, Hayata was far less impressive in her cadet days. So, it stuck in the back of my mind because I wanted to see how it would turn out.

Update on the new service toss rule proposed by JTTA during the ITTF AGM: the proposal was not accepted (https://youtu.be/2j2elPB9tN8?t=12678). Only 50.41% voted "Yes" to the change and they needed at least 75% for the proposition to pass.

Ma Young-Sam, the Head of the ITTF Umpire and Referees Committee opposed the passing of this new rule because of the following:

Based on the proposed amendment, different players can toss the ball at different heights because some players are taller than others. This may raise a question of fairness.
Players may squat or lower their heads when serving to circumvent this rule.
This is disadvantageous to players who use the backhand serve.
The service regulation should be applied to every person regardless of their ages and cannot be disregarded for young and elderly players. Otherwise, this will be confusing for both umpires and spectators.
It is crucial that the opinion of players be taken before hastily passing this amendment.

JTTA apparently forgot that some of the best servers on their team (e.g. Ito, Hayata, Hirano) have very effective shovel serves, and while their shovel serves generally comply with the 16cm rule, they do not consistently toss the ball above their head height when they do these shovel serves. It's like JTTA is trying to undermine their own team and get their own players faulted on their serves.

https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/cache.php?img=https%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2F07ZlGZc.jpg

To provide some context on the reference made in the 2nd photo, the 2016 World Junior Table Tennis Championships were held in South Africa with Ito, Hirano, Hayata, and Kato participating. However, there was a miscommunication and JTTA apparently failed to communicate to their players all the travel documents that needed to be secured before they can fly and be admitted by South Africa (http://mytabletennis.net/forum/2016-wjtt-championships_topic77415_post959001.html#959001). This led to the team entering South Africa 3 days later than originally planned as everyone was running around Japan to get the necessary paperwork done to make the tournament. It's just funny because South Africa was coincidentally chosen to host the 2023 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships during the AGM, so history could repeat itself.

The BoD have descided to go on with the WTTTC from 27. february 2021 in Busan, but with only 32 or in worst case 16 teams. I have not seen the minutes from the meeting, but this is the news from some of the NA's.

With 32 teams it seems rather easy to pick the entries. But what if they want only 16 teams? Any guesses how to pick the teams that should be scrapped? France was placed 18 in Halmstad, but are WR 9...

Situation not improving. Lot of countries too have suspended travel so logistically can be hassell. Think cons just outweigh the pros.

Olympics honestly feels like IOC and Japanese gov playing poker to see who cracks first and shoulders the bill similar to earlier in the year. At this rate unlikely unless things improve quick.

China is like "no, don't come." Table tennis is fortunate that China is willing to take on the burden. Qualification events for other sports that were supposed to take place in China have been canceled one after another, with the latest one for wrestling (https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2020/12/24/kiji/20201223s00032000574000c.html) delayed and moved to Kazakhstan. Getting there in normal times is already hard enough. Whatever the case, time is running out to determine the remaining quota before Tokyo 2020+1.

Last but not least, thumbs up to the UK for getting everyone in EU to "jump on" the no-deal Brexit, by coverin..., ahem, "trying to stamp out" the new strain since September until the shit hits the fan. Nice one, BoJo!
