A fantastic tournament to follow, be sure to get involved in the TTD discussions. We can use this topic as a means to display all the latest results, videos and news from this World Table Tennis event! What are your predictions for the men's and women's singles?

Just to add to the recent confusion about the seedings and draws.
Last week there were 91 participants in the men's qualification events and judging from the draw, the top 32 ranked players were seeded.
This week: 64 participants and only 8 (!) of those looks to be seeded.
Does anybody know if this actually a part of the new rules (which would be really weird in my opinion)?
Or if WTT is just making up the rules as they go along???
From the prospectus for Star Contender and Contender, the draw sizes have not been changed, but the seeding is definitely improvised, which is not mentioned at all.

So do seeds 1-4 follow a snake format or are seeds 3 and 4 seeded randomly? That seems to be the case for the men's and women's even in both WTT Contender and WTT Star Contender, or is it just lucky coincidence?

I feel like they should be distinguishing at least between top 16 seeds and lower seeds, since all the players getting first round byes seem to be higher ranked

I don't know if they do it on purpose but uploading the highlight of the match 24 hours later on youtube and relying on website click is not a true direction if ITTF desires more recognition across the world. Either they should upload yt videos frequently or let the outsources such as ttlondon2012, Malong fandmade, tt11tv,etc.. do their own highlight videos without copyright issues

Choi Hyo-joo, the recommended player for the women's division, is a naturalized player from China who plays as the ace of Samsung Life Insurance. She has filled the period of naturalization to become a representative of the World Championships, and from 2019, she began playing an active part as a representative in various international championships, and eventually ran with her Taegeuk mark in the Olympics. In this selection, she placed 3rd in the 1st round-robin and 2nd in the 2nd round-robin for a 2nd place finish in the combined rankings. She is also ranked 64th in the world ranking after Jeon Jihee, adding strength to her recommendation.

Absoluuutely pathetic and unprofessional!!!

Agreed! Surely we can do something to avert this disaster. There is a lot of good to the new WTT, but the angles must be fixed, and I would love to see Adam back (although that may just be a pandemic issue).
Can't we put up a petition or something????
Especially watching Table Tennis on the TV, it's hard for my eyes to keep up as the ball moves from left to right.
Also finding the angle with the crane difficult to watch, because the crane is moving while the ball is in play, and the combination of movement makes it really hard on the eyes.
Bit of a case of, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.
Can't we put up a petition or let the people at TTD know?

Hirano: Now you know why I played with a lower back support and ONLY lost 2-3 last week. You see, the doubles is worth more than the singles!
Hayata: I'm still recovering from foot pain after the All-Japan, played doubles, went the distance in every best of 5 singles match and still reached the final last week!
Ito: I played in singles only and still barely got enough sleep.
Ishikawa: I carried Hirano to the doubles title and no one cares. ๐ญ

Kallberg vs Ovtcharov in the quarters. Maybe the two current best European players? Dima looks like he's finally all the way back from injury, and Kallberg could be ready to challenge Falck as best in Sweden. The Swedish men's team is starting to look dangerous. WTT sucks. I canโt understand the schedule, draw, I couldnโt watch any game online because itโs just not clear when it should be. The information is just completely unreadable.
I didn't even get to the problems of video streaming, I can't even find a list of games for tomorrow, at what time and on what table.
The tournament system is also incomprehensible, there are two standings, Star Contenders and simply Contenders, nothing to understand.
And the WTT site - you can't find anything useful on it.
Everyone sends links to YouTube of interesting games, you click - the video has already been deleted due to violation of someone's rights.
ITTF decided to kill table tennis completely?

I went through their promotional material and summarized it in this blog post since WTT seems unable to aggregate all the information in one spot: https://edgesandnets.com/2021/01/26/ittfcalendar/
WTT Star Contender seems to be more like regular world tour, WTT Champions (not to be confused with world championships) is more like platinum tour, and WTT Grand Smash is a new thing that is modeled after grand slams and apparently is supposed to eventually replace the World Championships? WTT Champions and Grand Smash also have "mandatory participation" whatever that means.

One of my concerns looking at this new event structure is that we will no longer see any major Table Tennis events here in Australia.
We might get a Star Contender event, but with these seemingly limited to only 4 of the top twenty players participating, it will greatly reduce what we get here down under.
Shame!
Thanks for your blog post tho, really clarified a few things and cleared stuff up for me.

Women's doubles final a repeat of World Team Cup 2019, the match that probably spelled the beginning of the end for Suh Hyowon and Yang Haeun.
Robles and Oikawa played well, carrying their own teammates. Robles in particular kept finding a way out when down 2:6 in the 4th, while Ionescu were fuming. Uda's inexperience showed when he eased up after that, a fatal mistake the WTTC 2019 doubles runner-up didn't let pass.

If tomo goes through filus vs tomo is a good chance due to TH weakness in the chopper area (common with younger players) but if dima wins it's over. The familiarity and h2h makes it bad for filus!
But despite hating playing super defence players I love filus showing us how defence is still possible in 2021, also he is so much more exiting that a lot of the standard players due to his twiddles and ability to rush forward.
What a guy I reckon JSH is jumping for hot watching his game against the silent assassin!!

It's all twisted ๐คActually, Filus has looked that terrifying in all his matches, especially the backhand loops. He seems to have better attacks than the attackers themselves. And his backhand serve has been amazingly strong. No one puts it short.

Ruven Filus -- the best variative performance I ever saw
Was it really a long pips rubber on Filus backhand? Incredible power muscularity far superior to the tennis puffy idols.

I actually went through and counted the points that Filus won in his match with Jang Woojin (no later rounds because watching table 1 recordings seems to be impossible) and classified 72% of the points he won as "offensive shots." It's a small sample size and my definition of "offensive" is debatable, but I think it's still quite telling. Here's the associated blog post where I listed which types of shots I considered "offensive": https://edgesandnets.com/2021/03/12/6-ruwen-filus-shots-to-watch-out-for-in-the-wtt-doha-finals/

The ALKASS channel (Qatar) works for me - select "four" in there. XYZ SPORTS doesn't work for me.

Fantastic finals! Mima Ito on fire as always. Ruwen Filus had his chances, very impressive run of wins!

I would go with Mima Ito for winning two tournaments in a row. Yes, she's the best player of the field, but still it's not easy to win two in a row.
I have to give an honorable mention to Elizabeta Samara. Her loss to Hina Hayata in the Contender tourney was really a coin flip. Then, she has good wins over Kasumi and Kim Hayeong.

Dan = do you now have a contract with WTT to be their commentator of choice for all events going forward ?
is Adam Bobrow left out by WTT and we won't hear him again on ITTF / WTT TV ?

Adam said in an Instagram Live video that he's not commentating at the moment because of travel restrictions, but he hopes to be back in May. :D

Filus is very unusual player, one of the kind. His mid and longer distance chopping is more standard, but sometimes near the table he chops nonorthodox.
And he is very diverse, you can never expect what his return would be.
And all that makes the Harimoto win even more respectful. The guy is developing good mentality strength too.
Does making the finals mean that Lee/Jeon has secured a XD slot for the Olympics? I remember reading somewhere that WTT Doha is a qualification event but can't be sure. Pardon me.
Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament (https://www.ittf.com/tournament/5280/2021/asian-olympic-qualification/) in Doha instead?
