Hi, I'm not a penhold player but this is something I wondered about: if you watch top penhold players like xu xin or wang Hao the serve looks more like a hook Serve than a normal pendulum serve.

Is there a reason why that is? Or do I see that wrong?

I am a penholder and when I worked as an assistant coach at my club, I used shakehand. Because of the greater mobility of the wrist, we need to raise the elbow less like the shakehanders to do the pendulum serve, which makes it easier to do this hook motion after serving. The shakehander needs to raise the elbow high to serve, the penholder doesn't need it as much as the sh.

Makes sense, probably easier to put the bat vertical for sidespin in penhold than for sh.
