I wonder if ZYL is retired (or forced to retire) from international play. She's technically ranked one spot higher than LSW, but LSW was chosen instead of her to attend the Singapore Smash.

Laat I read about ZYL was her struggling with disease; I’ve seen no news since.

What made the organizers of these events finally come to understanding and have a change of heart and give people the corner camera angle? I'm really surprised. I've just watched one of the matches and the angle is really perfect now. I just wonder what made them come to this realization after such a long time of people complaining in the comments for such a long time, after almost two years and only change it now to what people want.

It's a bit strange, but as host nation, Singapore is allowed up to 10 additional wildcards per gender. Not sure how LSD was chosen for main draw, but I guess that's what they've decided. See the tail end of this article for the wildcard spots: https://circle.myactivesg.com/stories/world-no-9-feng-tianwei-will-lead-teamsgs-squad-of-17-players-at-the-wtt-singapore-smash?hsLang=en

So I hear the Grand Smashes are 1 out of 4 "Grand Slam" tourneys played annually? Can someone confirm.

I don't see any event info on any of the other Grand Smashes the remaining year.

Also wondering how this impacts the sport as a whole, since this parallels the Grand Slams in tennis as well, in terms of prestige and winning stakes. Wouldn't it be a (realistic) higher achievement to win multiple Grand Smashes in a row than a WTTC, World Cup + Olympics since those get played so rarely...

Yes, the goal is to have 4 Grand Smashes per year similar to how tennis has 4 Slams. The hope of the ITTF is that the players and fans will value the Smashes like they do the Olympics, WTTC, WC and they've structured the ranking points to do that as well as the incentive of the prize money. The event calendar looks very sparse in terms of WTT events beyond the Youth events. No other Grand Smashes have been announced, and I suspect they're having troubling finding host nations that can come up with the $2 million USD prize money let alone the other associated costs with running such a tournament. Hopefully, the pandemic situation will finally lessen enough this year so we can get back to some sense of normalcy.

Awesome, thanks for clarifying! Yes the event calendar looks to mainly feature Youth events and no other Smashes. Doesn't the $2mil come from international sponsors like DHS? Although that would be a huge prizepool to match...

Yes, it's hard to find enough sponsors to come up with $2 million. I'm speculating WTT recent appointment of Ai Fukuhara as WTT Japan General Manager was in hopes of having a Grand Smash in Japan. I do hope they succeed. It's finally nice to see a table tennis tournament with a prize pool worth writing about.

No live video in the WTT APP (where is it? Only live scores)
On the website, if both T1 and T2 are streaming then it automatically switches to T2 and there is no menu to switch to T1 (???)

Overall.. How can I watch T1? :)

Why the ITTF youtube channel has stopped uploading short format highlighted videos? They were just yesterday uploading them from the Qualifying Group but there hasn't been any uploaded since yesterday even though many matches have already finished today.

So far I have only found this video on this channel being in short format.

...

I have to give credit to ITTF/WTT on this one. They've already uploaded the entire live stream for tables 2,3, 4. I know it's long form, but for me, I just use the right arrow to skip to the beginning of each point. For short form, it takes time to edit and upload each match.

Showcase Table 1 is side angle. Tables 2,3,4 are corner angle. I am guessing that side view is more attractive for sponsors as it's easier to view their logos.

It's basically a tyranny to enrich the very few no matter how else you will try to convolute it in sugar-coated words but that's what it is.

The vast amount of comments and complaints on YT videos that are blaring saying how awful the side angle is and how probably an overwhelming 99% of people dislike it.

And it's not like you can't see the logos in the corner angle, that is just preposterous and ludicrous to claim otherwise.

So if you think this is democracy where people get what the majority want which is the corner angle then forget it. It's down to the very few and screw the rest.

The side angle isn't THAT bad, as long as the camera isn't static and follows the action (and zooms out when the players play away from the table). It's just that the corner angle is VASTLY superior. I mean, look how great this is: https://www.tabletennisdaily.com/forum/server/php/files/38/814/22/03/12/hab%20jpg.jpeg I'd use a wider angle lens, though...

And the sponsor ads are all perfectly visible. I would also put a LED ad board in the opposite corner.

EDIT: Streams are nice, but the frame rate puzzles me. It's 2022, can't they shoot and stream this in 60 frames per second? It makes all the difference in the world.

Embarrassing from Harimoto but nothing new, we know that he is not as good anymore and he can lose against many players now, it's hardly a surprise. His increased body size and weight made him worse. I think Togami Shunsuke has a bigger potential in the next years but he lacks experience.

I like the side angle very much for watching serve and receive since it is mostly over the table. It would be nice if they could change the camera angles smoothly during the action. The way every other sport in the world does.

As a fan, I love the corner angle like it was at the 2022 WTT Contender Muscaut Open. I dislike the side view except for perhaps the occasional shot just to have a different perspective.

However, if it's the case that the side view for the showcase table was sponsor driven, then I can accept that. Because if the choice is between having a multi-million dollar prize pool where 1 table is side and the others are corner view or having piddly prize pool for these deserving pros, I choose the former. I would love to have both corner view on all tables and multi-million dollar prize pool, but that's not the reality at the moment.

Most child prodigies stop being prodigies once they stop being children. They move far ahead of the curve very early in life, but the curve eventually catches up.

There are many exceptions, of course, but I don't believe Harimoto will be one of them. There's absolutely nothing genius about the way he plays now...

Unlike Truls, whose shoddy footwork already improved noticeably since the WTTC. Once he's improved his mental game (kid's a loose canon), only the skies will be the limit for him.

to me it is just as good if not better, mainly because you can see the feet/body of both players at all times. the one caveat is there needs to be a camera-person adjusting if the rally goes to the mid-court or far-court and they do that already.

It makes it almost impossible to appreciate the player's technical abilities and ball path (with spin) which is, when filmed accordingly, highly spectacular due to the extreme speed and ball trajectories involved. When filmed as it is now, ball trajectory and spin effects are practically unseen, everything looks "flat".

I've just tried watching Fan Zhendong vs Tiago Apolonia video and I just give up. For me it's completely unwatchable and I'll never watch any side angle table tennis video ever again. Thanks ITTF for ruining it.

It’s depend on what you want to see. For me feet/body of player is not that necessary part, we could see it enough from standard angle too.

But horizontal view is
1. Hard to see the spin of services
2. Hard to see spin of the rallies, trajectory
3. Hard to catch up speed of the ball
4. Hard to analysis the game plan because it’s hard to tell the ball position on the table (left or right court)

I think its too early to tell. i can feel definitely Harimoto has gained a lot more power on his FH thanks to his body change. But his footwork is a bit slower for sure, and that hasn't ever been his biggest strength.

If he can work on that, he'll get very good results again I think. His mental strength now is very weak because he keeps on losing. But this could change quickly and then we would all marvel how he is a winning machine. But yeh, his CURRENT level is not that special anymore.

If he can work on that, he'll get very good results again I think. His mental strength now is very weak because he keeps on losing. But this could change quickly and then we would all marvel how he is a winning machine. But yeh, his CURRENT level is not that special anymore.

Harimoto’s FH/BH recovery and switching have slowed down compared to when he was younger. Maybe he will rise to the top again once he adjusts to his body shape.

Great effort by Aruna, though I have a feeling ML is gonna get murdered by Wang Chuqin now. We'll see, hope I'm wrong.

P.S. I can live with the side angle, but the vertical angle is just ridiculous. It's borderline birds-eye view ffs. Bring the bloody camera down a little.

HIRANO put on a good fight in G1 against WANG Yidi. She was up 10-8 but lost the BH rallies at the end, and lost 11-13 this game. You don't have second chances against top Chinese Players 0-3.

after disappointing results from fellow Japanese players, UDA managed to edge BOLL 3-2 in the moneytime. a nice win for him, i hope it will give me some confidence for his next matches and tournaments.

Maybe MH should have a built in agreement with her coach that if she get's up 10-8 with the serve against any of the top Chinese just call timeout. Exact same thing happened in her match with CM. During game 1 you can see that WYD was winning the fast BH-BH rallies. But that's the same pattern she got into despite having the serve. Actually, MH had a good chance when she forced a FH push by WYD, quick BH to force her to move, but then she continue with BH-BH rally. MH really does have a very good game, but she has to up her mental game.

Awesome win for Uda. He's always had the talent, but also has been very up and down. I hope this spurs him on to greater heights. LJH will be tough, but at least a style that Uda is comfortable with. He picks up a minimum of $15,000 USD this tournament which is very nice for the university student.

The side angle is so unbearably outrageous that they should at least give us another separate video of the same matches but with a corner angle instead. But of course we're all forced to watch the side angle even though they do have another camera at the corner angle on set which only shows like very rarely, and designed that way on purpose so that most of the time our eyes are glued to their stupid logos shoved into our faces.

Embarrassing from Harimoto but nothing new, we know that he is not as good anymore and he can lose against many players now, it's hardly a surprise. His increased body size and weight made him worse. I think Togami Shunsuke has a bigger potential in the next years but he lacks experience.
I think the issue is how to move from a countering game to a game that is troubling for your opponents to deal with beyond the serve and banana. As he become more conventional, his limitations also stand out as his speed/timing becomes less troubling once he has to step back from the table.

I don't think he's coached by his parents too much these days. Most of his coaching is from his Japanese national team coaches. But they don't seem to be teaching him anything.

Some of the Japanese news programs give some little insight into his training under the Japanese coaches, and a lot of it seemed to have been focused on physical strength. But I don't see much increase in his power, and he looks slower than before.

One step back will always be slower than off the bounce.

Mass is a hindrance for agility. Maturing players need to find a new balance when fleshing out - and probably adapt their play style in doing so.

YUAN Jianan has ousted Mima ITO. I just watched the last game, it was very much a disaster for Mima. It looked like she didn't know how to make a BH anymore. Can't really explain why ? Also, YUAN managed to smash the ball very early in the rally, Mima's ball were too high too easy ? and YUAN didn't have any problems to receive Mima's serve. 1-3 and a very surprising and difficult defeat, one which can affect her confidence - i hope not.

I notice Darko played slower in terms of recovery due to his size. He tends to step further away in order to buy time. In contrast Lin is slim, but with good techniques he stayed close to the table and launched attack after attack. Lin's recovery and fh-bh switch is way faster.

Another thing is Lin is a leftie, he effectively annihilated Darko's bh advantage.

Well, I noticed he is sporting a knee band on his right knee.
With the bigger slower ball, FH dominant style demands a higher level of power from your body as compared to playing FH with a 40mm ball. I am not surprised athletes get injuries at a younger age. That's part of the reason why they play more BH rallies as it demands less from their bodies.

TMXI maybe IT is innerforce woven of axylium, thin soft carbon, and yellow zylon, something like they did with Trinity in Joola but more
unique just to get imitation of w968 and IT is made in Korea, for Korean brand and Korean player ?? An s balls from fh side are heavy but he can return balls over FZD spin from backhand side
For me IT looks like banger for fh side players you can hear how soft and springy ball is coming to FZD side
AFter ball changes a lot of sound from equipment is very empty. You can hear very lively sound
Yeh I expect it to be an innovative blade as well. The difference between joola trinity is that Trinity is an outer layer carbon whereas TMXi is an inner one. Yes, it could be more or less close/similar to w968.
The fact that ball changes sound alot as you've mentioned, do you think it's a bad thing or not?

Wow for the first time ever the camera man actually did it right here at 0:08
https://www.youtube.com/embed/f73w-Vh6QVI?t=8?autohide=1&controls=1&showinfo=0 Imagine how amazing if every match was done this way from this angle at 0:08 and where the camera man simply zooms on the player that is serving. It's incredible how stupid it is that so many previous matches have the camera cut at the moment of service which is the crucial part. This time though the camera simply zoomed in as the ball is falling down on the racket, that's how it should always be.

Hi to all, I was reading this thread, but no one says anything about the curious way of how the balls are springing/rebounding on this black tables. I have seen so much missing shots, even also by chinese players (XX, ML...), although they have many hours of practice with this tables...In comparison, the women had less missed strokes, probably they are playing less rotation and more straight and near to the table (different angles of the balls by hitting the table).

Would say that the surfaces of the black tables are different to other DHS tables or other brands.

Someone noticed this?

Glad I'm not the only one experiencing shitty WTT stream. It's ridiculous how they can't even get the basic stuff right.

I found a guy screensharing stream from CCTV on YT; for future reference just search "Barefoot Walker" on YT and you'll find his livestream under the comments on his only video. Sometimes it gets reported but he'll revive it no problem. Hope that helps someone out next time. So frustrating WTT, seriously.

Match-wise, from a spectator view the FZD-ML game wasn't that exciting in terms of rallies. Reminded me of the Tokyo finals too. I'm sure there's a lot more going on tactically, and the match scores were close, but overall no where near as entertaining as some of the other matches I've seen.

Best match for me was probably Uda-Boll.
