Why does world top players still need a coach?

They still need coaches because in the heat of a match, your brain just is so focused on the game, there are a lot of things that you don't notice. There might be advantages that you should be taking, or disadvantages that you should be trying to shore up, but that in the heat of the match when your mind isn't always thinking right you aren't noticing. That's the job of the coach to see those things.

But aside from match things, once you reach the professional level, the only way to sustain that level is to train a certain correct way. Take for example cycling, bikers like Lance Armstrong train a certain way throughout the year so that they can reach their peak perfectly when the tour de france comes around. Top players like WLQ and Ma Lin need coaches to keep them near their peak, otherwise they would see their skills deteriorate.

It is a coach that can find mistakes a player make. Without a coach, no one can suggest what a player should do in a particular situation!
