2012 Final World Olympic Qualification Tournament, 10 May 2012 - 13 May 2012, Doha, Qatar

Total number of entries so is: 116

Players from all over the World will take part in an opportunity to secure their Olympic place when they take part in the Final World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Doha, Qatar which proceeds on the 10th May 2012

A place in the Olympic Games is the prize; gold, silver or bronze, simply being an Olympian is a medal in itself.

The opportunity to be present at the ExCel Arena in late July is sufficient motivation; no further source is needed but a moment of inspiration may be needed to secure the desired goal.

A moment of inspiration to fulfil aspirations; the venue where that is possible is the Aspire Zone in Doha, the capital of the State of Qatar. In that state-of-the-art setting that the final Olympic Qualification Tournament for the table tennis events at the London 2012 Olympic Games will be staged. (Source: ittf.com)

Full players list and entries here

Procedure

The competition will involve 16 qualifying groups of four players. Some may contain three or six depending on entries. The top two players from each group will progress into a straight knock-out tournament.

The finalists from the men's and women's cateogry will qualify for the London 2012 Olympics. Any British player who failed to reach the final places will have to rely on the host allocation places which the BTTF will announce on the 15th May 2012.

From there only the finalists from the men's and women's event will qualify for the Olympics and, for any British players who fail to reach these places, they will then have to rely on the host allocation places which will be announced by the BTTF selection panel on May 15th.

Wow, so there is only one spot, only for the winner? Apart from the British contestants of course. Pretty tough competition, but I hope Apolonia will make it. Portugal belongs at the Olympics. Although France might do well too :p

There are 2 spots for men and 2 spots for women. Trained with Chunli on Monday morning, was amazing will be interesting to see if she can get very far.

Crazy.. Such a tough competition. With the pressure anyone in top 20 could win

There will be more than 2 spots, probably around 10 or so. Details to be announced.

The details already have been announced...there are 2 spots per gender.

You have to read the full regulations:

"The number of qualification places from this competition may be increased if the continental qualification
allocation of 40 players is not reached, if the host NOC direct entry place is not used and/or if the Team
Quota (14 places) is not fully utilised. "

I think the continental qualification will be reached, the only reason it wouldn't be is if they cancelled tournaments or reduced the number of qualifiers.

It's already clear that several of the players who were successful at the continental qualification tournaments won't be eligible to play singles (Ma Long, for one). So others will have to take those spots, and apparently they're using the world tournament for this - although that is not exactly clear from the rules.

Also, the team quota will not be used in full, that will open up further spots. (This is similar to 2008.)

The whole process is very messy, but there will be more than two spots eventually, when all is said and done.
