London 2012 Olympic Games ,28 July 2012 - 08 August 2012, London, England

The most anticipated tournament of the year is fast approaching and begins just under 3 weeks time! The London 2012 Olympics! Once again similar to that of Beijing Olympics in 2008, China occupy the top seeded places for the Men's and Women's Singles event. The seedings have been based on the most recent ITTF World Ranking List (http://www.tabletennisdaily.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?3041-July-World-Rankings-2012) published by the International Table Tennis Federation on Wednesday 4th July 2o12.

China's Zhang Jike, the World #1 enters the London 2012 Olympics as the #1 seed.

TableTennisDaily's promo video for the London 2012 Olympics!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGDtC3qtJ-A&feature=g-all-f

The time is finally here! :) Let's begin discussing the seeds. Will Zhang Jike prove he is the number 1 player of the World? Can European no.1 Timo Boll win the hearts of the world? For some players the pressure may be overwhelming. Who can handle the intense pressure will be key. Can an outsider upset the seeds?

We can use this thread as a means to display all the latest results, videos and news from this spectacular event! What are your predictions for each event?

We will make the London 2012 Olympic (Team) discussion shortly :)

semifinal will be timo vs zhang or timo vs wang hao? obviously if they reach the semi...

I hope for the european players Maze, Boll, Dima and Persson.. But honestly I think that Zhang Jike will win the whole thing. I also think that Wang Hao will not reach the semi, but loose in the quarters. Ovtcharov will probably do very well, if he keeps his good form from this season :)

I think Persson will cause some upsets, if he can make it back from his last injury tho.. And I think he'll do that :)

And for the womens... Ding Ning is my favourite to the gold medal :)

I think CNT will be all over the olympics and ZJK will show his worth here during this season. This is where he will prove why he's number 1 and world champion. :)

Timo Boll would play Zhang Jike in the semi final. Wang Hao would play Mizutani.

I think Zhang Jike and Wang Hao will have a hard time getting to the finals. But still, when they're in the right form, they shouldn't have any problems with any of these players. Only Boll, Ovtcharov and Niwa seem like a threat to me actually.

Zhang Jike Will be the Olympic Champion

Zhang Jike is the real performer at major world events at the moment, I think if he can maintain that then the gold medal is his for sure. Especially considering the fact that Wang Hao has lost 2 finals and will be feeling the pressure and that Zhang Jike beat Wang Hao in both of the two major events he won (WTTC and WC)

According to the commentator in total China Olympic Simulation Match, it looks like Wang Hao will in same bracket as zhang jike. Mostly that both play from one country will be in same bracket, so that the final will consist of each play from different country.

Can anyone find this info in ITTF or olympic website yet?

That can't be true - #1 and #2 seeds (ie Zhang Jike and Wang Hao) will be in opposite halves, as usual.

Also, note that the semifinal pairings will be decided by lot, #1 can meet #3 or #4 etc.

It could be true...did you hear this from the Chinese commentator himself? I can't understand Chinese, but I think you understand mandarin. I've checked the website, but nothing has been published yet. The draw will be on the 25th July.

It would be crazy if they put the #1 and #2 players in the same draw. That would just not make any sense and is never done.

If they put the #1 and #2 seeds in the same side of the draw, that would be a disgrace to the sport.

On a different note, I cannot believe how close we are to the London Olympics. Wow. It will be fun. You guys who live in the UK must be beside yourself excited. I wish I could go. What an experience that would be.

Dan, will you a group with Table Tennis Daily signs organized for the Table Tennis events?

well, when it comes to money and attraction, everything could happen. Especially UK itself would hope as many ppl would go for all events...

If there is nothing on television you can always tune in at ITtv :) They will maybe not broadcast everything, although I still have a little hope that they will because there are only 4 tables, and I believe they had 3 livestreams at the WTTC. So maybe 4 streams is possible too. Anyways, you can find the full tournament schedule (Singles and Teams) here (http://ittf.com/World_Events/2012OG/Schedule_OG2012.pdf)

Hmm yeah you might be right, I think they did the same at last Men's World Cup.

I also heard about Youtube livestreaming the sports events that are less popular - maybe table tennis? It's been a while since I've heard news about it though. Here's an article on it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18352578

i voted for joo out of pure hope, but seriously...i think zhang jike will win it, wang hao 2nd then third will be between boll, joo, oh, mizutani and maybe chuang, depending on the draw...however,there is still a small margin for upset as zhang and wang havent been coping well with the warm up mathces.
womens...i dont know..i think it will be a ding-li final, but im not going to say who'll win...the bronze i think will be either kim kyung ah or tie yana, provided kim can avoid wang yue gu in the draw because she always seems to lose to her...tie could beat one of the chinese however, that would be interesting...

They did this once, for the doubles competition at the 2004 Olympics, in order to avoid an all-Chinese final. That was indeed stupid.

The general procedure for the singles draw is posted on ittf.com, Zhang and Wang will NOT be in the same half.

i think it's time for a surprise in our sport :).
i vote for Ovtcharov. he won 3-0 Mizutani in wttc. he lost from Ma long 3-0, but i think te second set was a matter of psychology, as he was leading the 2nd set with 9-4. if he had won, the match would have been a derby.

Ah that's too bad, I guess they don't own rights for the Olympic footage. But I think many national broadcasts will have internet streams. I remember in 2008 you could watch practically any sport in the Netherlands via internet :)

I'm looking forward to the men's singles event but one word keeps nagging away in my head - 'devalued'. Because of the inept qualification rule, some players (four in the world top ten) are not even allowed to compete. Incredibly, it's more difficult to win the English Open than Gold at London 2012.

The Olympic Games are supposed to be about watching the very best athletes. Sadly, table tennis is an exception to the rule (the draw is full of lowly-ranked players, has-beens and veterans). Zhang Jike must be feeling so happy.

In fairness to Zhang Jike though, Ma Long was at the World Championships. He was playing great. He destroyed Oh Sang-Eun after struggling with Bojan Tokic. When he faced Wang Hao in the Semi-Finals, he was on FIRE. He was up 2-1 and looked unstoppable. And then Wang Hao used the old-pro gamesmanship on him and slowed the game down, kept Ma Long from launching the first attack, and beat him with brains instead of power.

Zhang Jike beat the guy who beat Ma Long. And when Zhang Jike was up 2-0 and Wang Hao changed the game tactics and tried to do to Jike what he did to Long, Zhang Jike adjusted and took care of Wang Hao.

ZHANG JIKE BEAT THE GUY WHO BEAT MA LONG IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. You cannot take that away from him. It is true that Zhang Jike has more trouble with Ma Long than he does with Wang Hao, but, it is not Zhang Jike's fault that Ma Long could not figure out how to adjust to Wang Hao's game tactics. They don't just give you tournaments like the World Championships. You have to turn it on and win those.

So hopefully, at the 2013 World Championships we will see what happens in the men's singles event. :) I will be rooting for Fang Bo. :)

Wang Hao has a good chance, still in awesome form.
ZJ obviously has a good chance, nr1 always has a chance haha ;)
Boll has a good chance i think, he was in good form at the WTTTC and could possibly defeat WH or ZJ.
Jun Mizutani has been really good lately.

Other than those 4, there won't be many that have a real chance imo.
Maybe Dimitrij can do something spectacular? ;)

Wang Hao: A few months ago he gained what looked to be about 30 lbs. When he is that heavy he cannot move the way he needs to against top players. The last footage I saw of him he had taken off about half the weight but was still not moving well and was not playing up to par. If he does not get all the way down to fight weight, he is in trouble and could get knocked out early.

Timo, I am hoping but, in the Japan Open he was not ready for tournament play. He has only played 1 or 2 tournaments in 2012. I am still hoping but it is hard to play well at that level of competition when you have not been in the real pressure of tournament play for that long. Hence, in the Japan Open he got knocked out in a very early round.

Jun, I am still hoping, but his style of lobbing does not work against the Chinese attack and Wang Hao and Zhang Jike will probably take care of him, but I can hope anyway.

Ovtcharov: he might have the best chance, realistically, of all the European players this year. I can be skeptical and still hope. He is the best chance of all the dark horse players who qualified for the show.

Michael Maze: still my favorite dark horse. I love the way he plays. What I said about Timo sort of applies here. These two have not played enough top flight tournaments to have a real shot. So Maze's chances are only slightly more than none, but I will be rooting for him all the way.

So Maze, Timo, Ovtcharov, Jun, lets go, you can do it. Go for the GOLD. :)

I voted joo, but the fact is that he won't win if he plays a Chinese- they read his game too well now, so if he is to win then all the results will have to go his way. He will also have to avoid samsonov, because he has massive struggles with him.
Jun...well, I just don't see it happening to be honest- he is fairly consistent with his results, but I can't remember the last time e beat a player in the top 10 (excluding chuabg chih yuan and Wang liqin, if Es ever beaten Wang)
I want joo to win! :)

Just landed at Heathrow tonight at 6.30 - on the way back from Sweden. defo sure we saw the CNT queuing at customs, all in their red tracky tops, China on the back and golden dragon on the front.

Couldn't get photos at customs for various security reasons but Mrs thinks she got some at the baggage reclaim.

Will do. As soon as the Mrs finishes with the camera.

Who is in the Swedish team???

Had three blokes and three maybe four women in their Swedish Olympic kit on the plane with us too. Kit was Li-Ning, but that doesn't necessarily mean tt.

Ok had a think about joo's draw...
not too bad, but he will have to play amazing to beat ZJk in qfs- one thing I think joo will have in his favour is thy zhang lost to hi last time and this time he may be a little too aggressive or something to try and blow joo put of the water- his lack of experience might show- I hope so then joo can win! ;)

Short interview with Michael Maze:

Michael MAZE (DEN): "My father was British and my mother was Danish"

On the draw for the men's singles: "I think the draw is ok, could have been better, could have been worse. My first match will be very tough against (Kalinikos) KREANGA (GRE). Normally, I would lose to him as I have the last four times, but because it's the Olympics maybe I will beat him."

On his knee injury that kept him out of action for a year and his current fitness: “I have no pain in the knee. I'm in physically quite good shape. I haven't had many matches in the last three months but I've found other ways to train. I have to do more physically, especially to keep my knee strong. I’m fit and ready for the Games and looking forward to getting started.”

On his prediction for the men's singles: "I've had a feeling for a long time that it won't be Chinese finalists. They are only two here (ZHANG Jike and WANG Hao, CHN) and they're under huge pressure.

On playing his first match of the tournament in the third round as the Olympic format means the top 16 players sit out the first three rounds (preliminary, first, second): "You start in the third round and it's not normal to have a strong opponent from the first match."

On the elaborate tatoo on his left arm, featuring a ring and the British and Danish flags: "These are the things you do when you are out injured for a long time. My father was British and my mother was Danish. When my father died, I got his ring. But I lost it. Now I have it on my arm so I'll never lose it."

Olympic Table Tennis broadcasted by CCTV

All times are GMT+7
Live matches, mostly finals, semi-finals and matches for 3rd place, are marked in red.

I can't read Chinese (sorry), but you can compare the times with the ones in the regular time schedule (http://www.ittf.com/World_Events/2012OG/Schedule_OG2012.pdf (GMT+0!)) to find out which matches are shown live.

There are several sites that let you watch CCTV channels for free online. I'm not sure which sites have the best quality, but I hope someone else knows. :p
I've also found sites that might show livestreams for every day, but I'm not sure yet if those will work. I'll try them out when the matches begin.

Would love to see William defeat Samsonov! I will do a lap around my house if he does! :)

Also, Tang Peng helps Boll's draw to. So many upsets on the first 2 days! Incredible! What an Olympics this is!

Yea I was quite suprised by Noshad beating Tang Peng! Great win for him.

Timo doesn't look to be in good form, lots of unforced errors and not very tight control of the ball... I think Dimitrij Ovtcharov looks much better, very dominating and powerful and unafraid to go for his shots, I think he has a realistic chance of getting a medal. Zhang Jike looks extremely strong here, his form reminds me of his form during the World Cup 2011, probably going to get the gold medal. Kim Hyok Bong looks really strong, moving very fast with an extremely strong FH. He may cause many problems for Jiang Tianyi. Samsonov looks really weak here, not taking much initiative on the first ball, and really only pushing and blocking along with some weak control topspins. He's probably going to lose 0-4 to such an in-form ZJK.

The quarters probably will be ZJK - Kim Hyok Bong, Ovtcharov - Mizutani, Boll - Chuang, and Oh - Wang Hao, with the semis probably going to be basically Germany vs China on each half. I think the interesting matchups b4 this would be Boll vs Crisan, ZJK vs Kim, Wang Hao vs Gao Ning. There could be upsets happening in these matchups. I really hope to see ZJK vs Kim, it could be one of the best matches in the Olympics.

And what about Maze?

Unfortunately Michael Maze's style doesn't match up well with Mizutani's (the man he's going to meet next). He'll do well vs those players that play a lot of "standard" table tennis, as he has very good serves, spin and rhythm variation and deceptive/unorthodox playing style in general. He would actually have decent chances against players like Wang Hao and Ovtcharov. But Mizutani is as good as him in terms of serving, deception and spin. Also, Maze doesn't recover well from his first power topspin in general, and Mizutani has insane defence which will force him to attack a second, third time which will reduce Maze's chances of winning the point by a lot. I don't think Maze has done well vs Mizutani historically. It'll be a very interesting matchup, with a lot of unorthodox and weird shots in general.

Maze actually had to play with his 2nd bat because his first one was too thick. Just watched Ovtcharov-Drinkhall and Boll-Alamiyan. Ovtcharov-Drinkhall was a pretty good game but Drinkhall just couldn't keep up. Boll-Alamiyan was actually pretty boring.

Men's Round of 16 will be livestreamed this evening starting at 7pm on eurovisionsports.

Don't forget Ovtcharov either. He was playing well yesterday. It's just sad that he and Maze meet in the QF. I feel like they should both be semi-finalists.*

Samsonov appears an easy opponent for Jike. His performance against Henzell today was shaky at best. Henzell was allowed to control the game and only lost due to the amount of mistakes he was making going for big shots. Jike won't and didn't make those kind of mistakes today.

Wang Hao also looks a little shaky but I can see him easily getting through the QF

I stayed so sad after Boll lost..
I really wanted him to win..
Now Crisan will play his former team partner from Ochsenhausen, Chuang Chih-Yuan ..

They will be in the same team again next season, as Chuang is joining Crisan in Bremen.

Its maze's chance to shine. Beating mizutani usually is something only the Chinese can do.

I just hope all the best for Wang Hao.

I am so excited for the teams event, looking forward on Ma long's murderous performance.

I just hope his new hair would really make his performance murderous hahahah.

Okay Dan, tell us what its like as a spectator being able see all the matches live at the arena. Is it crazy! Are you having fun yet! Have you got to hang out with any of the players! Tell us what it is like on the ground. What matches have you been able to watch?

I have to say, Ariel Hsing played great. I believe she is 16 years old. It looks to me like, between now and when she is 24-26, if she had the right training and the opportunities to play internationally, she could be top 20 maybe even top 10. Too bad she is smart and will probably just go to college after she finishes High School next year. It was fun to see that she could give the World #3 a little bit of a challenge.

Ariel is 16 yes, and honestly she has a chance to do well in 2016. The problem is whether or not she continues to train after high school or head to Stanford. To my knowledge she has a very good chance with her referrals and connections to get in. The great thing is that she and her parents are very likely to discuss it and if is important enough for her, she would have the capability to train for Rio. However I believe she was already contacting her Stanford referrals just a week ago, but with her match play I wouldn't be surprised if she is talking to her parents about it at this point.

They are extremely supportive of her and her dreams and I have no doubt they will do everything to their ability to make them come true.

Boll lost at least 3 points due to his false serves... And also a lot of his attempts to counter-attack with backhand top spin failed.

I would hate to see Chinese vs Chinese in the finals.

I hope Maze or Ovtcharov at least will get to play with the Chinese in the finals.

Well this was weird..
In fact, Boll called time out and since that moment he didnt get a single point..
And now, poor Fukuhara, Ding Ning crushed her like a child.. :(

I'm just hoping that one of the european players will make it to the final!

But tough one between Michael Maze v Dimitri Ovtcharov . I want Maze to win as he has had bad luck with injuries and he is a fantastic player, so unique in his style but then I also want Ovtcharov to go through as I believe that he will be a stronger opponent for the chinese.

GO EUROPE!

Unless they bring out Hao Shuai. :)

Nah, I think, the player who wins that Semi-Final will have the best chance against Zhang Jike, but neither have too much of a chance if he is on his game.

A friend of mine sent me this link and on it you can see the match between Ariel Hsing and Li Xiaoxia. It is a good watch. But, if I was Ariel, I would have been nervous in the first game when I was down 8-0. :) She was not. Here is the link:

I wouldn't be nervous if I am playing against one of the top 5 in the world..Xiaoxia is the one who's suppose to be nervous. :) Losing is expected, winning is a huge bonus. I would go out with all guns blazing. There's no shame losing to Xiaoxia I say :) Credits to Ariel...she did extremely well, and she'll only get better in the years to come.

Look at bbc sport live first match between Crisan and Chuang at 0:21 minute. Probably the most exhilarating rally point so far. People went barmy to the core after Chuang finally slumped Crisan making 19 top spins in total to win the point.

Anyways, before the semifinals, Ovtcharov should ask himself:
"How many points I won after that stupid backhand push on the forehand side??"
The answer is 2 .. as far as I remember..
Compared to over 20 points that he lost that way , I think he should learn forehand push ;)

Agreed completely .... he loses some point unnecessarily playing backhand from forehand side .. not just push ... in my opinion.

Funny thing, when you count the points, its
Ovtcharov - Maze: 64-66 .. so Maze won :D lol ..
The thing is .. I think .. Maze did not hold on mentally.
He was in the lead in 6th game, where he should won!
He was in the lead 4:2, then he probably realised he really can win and guess what?
Ovtcharov got 6 points in a row.
And a common thing happened in the last game.
He was 5:2 in front, sides changed and he again believed he can win.
Guess what?
Ovtcharov won 4 out of next 5 points making it 6:6. Then 8:8 and then Ovtcharov got 2 matchpoints.
Maze really looked like he plays better under pressure than in the lead.
It was only a matter of the nerves. After what I saw I think Maze would have more chances against Zhang than Dima.
Dima played not good. Too many mistakes (yes and that backhand from the forehand, my eyes hurt .. ) and Zhang will beat him easily if he plays like this..
