February has been the month of the Kuwait and Qatar Open, two Super Series World Tour events which attract several top 10 players every year!At the Kuwait Open the Chinese men showed their dominance by occupying all four semi-final spots in the singles event. This ended up with one of the newest "El Clásicos" of table tennis: Ma Long and Zhang Jike played the final. This round it was Zhang Jike who managed to secure the title, however it did not earn him enough points to reach a higher ranking...

In the Women's singles there was a bigger surprise; Singapore's Feng Tianwei upset the seeding as she defeated Ding Ning, ranked World no.1, in 7 sets to reach the final. However, Liu Shiwen ended her hopes for the title with a straight 4-0 victory. Still, Feng Tianwei secures the 4th spot because of her upset.

At the Qatar Open it was Xu Xin's time to defend his titles of both 2012 and 2011, and thus to score a hattrick. China again managed to take all four semi-final spots; however now it showed young talent Yan An instead of Zhang Jike, who had to retreat because of an injury. Yan An showed that he can already substitute the old-school team by first defeating Wang Hao... The final against Ma Long ended up in a thriller which eventually ended up in a 4-3 win for Ma Long, which earned him enough points to retrieve his World no.1 spot after 8 months. Yan An did not only reach the 21st spot this month, he is now also at the top of the U21 rankings. Japan's Koki Niwa falls down to the 2nd place.

Pretty much according to the seeding the Women's singles event ended up in a final between Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen. This time it was Ding Ning who showed class by winning Qatar's Gold. The biggest surprise here was another young Chinese; World Junior champion Zhu Yuling reached the semi-finals in both World Tours. She has been rewarded with her first top 10 spot; the 8th place. Similar to Yan An, Zhu Yuling also now is at the top of the U21 rankings. Japan's Kasumi Ishikawa falls down to the 2nd place.
