The ITTF has updated the rankings very early this time! The new rankings were published on May 21, 2013. According to ITTF's calendar, the next release will be July 1, 2013.

--- Xu Xin remains World no.1 ---

Although not winning the WTTC last week, Xu Xin still tops the World Rankings. All of the other top 5 players have gotten closer however...

Although they were not the favourites for the title, 2012 Olympic champions Zhang Jike and Li Xiaoxia have extended their successes by remaining unbeaten in Paris. For Zhang Jike it was his second WTTC title in a row, for Li Xiaoxia it was a first; she can now add her name to the small group of Grand Slam winners.

Kenta Matsudaira and Hu Limei - Upsetting the odds - Photos by: ITTF and tabletennista

The biggest upsets in the Men's singles were caused by Kenta Matsudaira. Having lost a very tight match against Ma Lin 2 years ago at the WTTC in Yokohama, this time he took his revenge. He impressively beat Ma Lin 4-1, but it didn't stop there. Kenta beat the surprising Hung-Chieh Chiang from Chinese Taipei and Belarus' Vladimir Samsonov, to eventually be stopped by Xu Xin in a fantastic duel. Kenta jumps from the 58th to the 28th spot.

China's Hu Limei was already a surprise before the WTTC had started. This unknown defending player managed to directly qualify for Paris during China's Trials where she beat Ding Ning in the final. Since she did not have a ranking, she swept her way through the groups, preliminary rounds and main draw, winning 4-0 every match. However in the round of 32, the two met again. Were it the nerves or Ding Ning knowing her opponent a bit better this time.. Who knows. Hu Limei lost the rematch but earns the 94th place as her first world ranking.

It has been a great WTTC! So what do you think, will Xu Xin and Ding Ning stay at the top of the ranking the following months? Or will they be caught by this year's WTTC winners Zhang Jike and Li Xiaoxia?
And will the surprises, the North Koreans, or Kenta Matsudaira continue their form after the WTTC? Discuss!

In the accumulated # of points,

Ma Long went from 2929 to 2955, that is an increase of 26 points.

Xu Xin went up from 2964 to 2979, that is an increase of 15 points

Why did Ma Long go up 11 points more than Xu Xin when they both lost in the semi finals and I don't think there were any other events in the month?

Wang Hao went from 2833 to 2904, that is 71 points.

Zhang Jike went from 2828 to 2922, 94 points.

Those two sound like they make sense. But why did Ma Long receive more points than Xu Xin when they both had the same basic results.

It is because players earn points after winning, depending on the ranking of their opponent. Xu Xin won against lower ranked players (Apolonia, Freitas, Matsudaira) compared to Ma Long (Tokic, Niwa, Boll) and therefor he earns less points than Ma Long. This is how they calculate it, altough I'm not getting to 11 points either: http://www.ittf.com/ittf_ranking/pdfs/2013/2013_Rating&BP_Tables.pdf

Thanks Steven! Amazing review as always! Kenta made a great jump and totally deserved this. I thought his performance at the WTTC was truly epic!

Hu Limei jumps straight into the top 100. Not bad for a first ranking :)

Xu Xin losing to ZJK costs him more points than Ma Long losing to Wang Hao
