Only one big event to end 2013 with; the World Junior Championships! This event gives us a look into the future of table tennis. Latest winners include Koki Niwa, Fan Zhendong and Zhu Yuling - All still rising players.

Fan Zhendong himself, still a junior, did not participate, leaving chances for new Chinese names. China gathered a team of 4 boys and 4 girls and started their tournament impressively by winning both team's gold medals. However, as expected, big challenges were formed by team Japan consisting of Yuto Muramatsu, Masataka Morizono, Mima Ito and Miu Hirano. Japan earned silver... The question was, can upsets be created in the singles event?

Sadly this did not happen in the women's draw: China filled the semi finals after defeating Szocs and Ito in the quarters. Gu Yuting and Liu Gaoyang, being the more experience juniors through playing World Tour events earlier in 2013, battled their way to the final in which it was Gu Yuting who won in a tight match (4-3).

Things were different in the boys' draw. Morizono again showed what he was capable of by beating Zhou Qihao in the quarters and secured his medal. At the other end of the draw it was not teammate Muramatsu who reached the semi finals, but Korea's Jang Woojin. Jang put up some great upsets as he also eliminated the rest of the Chinese players; Liang Jingkun, Kong Lingxuan and, finally, Zhou Kai.

Doo Hoi Kem of Hong Kong, just 17 years old, already at rank 53! And to say that Lee Ho Ching is at 21 right now at the age of 20 is already incredible.

Great review as always Steven. Its incredible how Fan Zhendong is young enough to be able to participate in Junior events! I am really looking forward to the World Tour Grand Finals. I wonder how much this event will have an impact on the Febuary World Rankings. It could change some rankings in the top 10!
