I recently purchased DHS Hurricane 2 and 3 and they smell really foul, I've also ordered 729/Friendship rubbers before with the same stench. Is it to do with the gluing process between rubber and sponge?

Yes, what you are smelling is the smell of glue and booster.
Not only Chinese rubbers are like that, some non Chinese also have a strong/horrible smell.

It's a good smell to me. It reminds me that the rubber is still powerful and new.

I have to say that the smell is also similar to dry codfish

Because they are made with human Chinese sweat and oil.

Just like Chinese food is made yummier with a white powdery substance made with crushed Chinese bones. Nope, it is not called monosodium glutamate because that's what my grandma told me... And no one argues with my grandma!
