Nice to see! I always thought that the contact should be made at the highest point (which the ball has no height or Y axis variation). But hitting it at the rising phase looks to be able to produce more SPIN. It's definitively harder than counterlooping at the downward phase.

Comparatively speaking, is it a skill which was developed or just heavily used this decade?

Schlager did that shot when he waz younger, so it isn't a really recent thing.

Some chineses developed the technique even further with tacky-dense rubbers. As equipment and players evolved, this technique had increased usage.
