It would be better if you like to hit through the ball.

Better for what? What would you like to improve? What is your current blade?

What are the regulations on sponge thickness anyways? I thought it was only 2.0 mm. But I don't really know much.

Speed and control is like 2 totally contradicting things
Faster the equipment = more difficult to control
Slower the equipment = more easy to control etc

In the speed glue era, thinner sponge will equal more control
In Chinese coaching, thinner sponge will be better for beginners
In ESN rubbers, thinner sponge will allow the ball to hit the blade too quickly - and some people don't like this.

IMO, you are using super fast equipment, maybe you should slow things down a bit if you are struggling with control
