The ITTF has published the new world rankings! These were released on October 4, 2014.

Ding Ning back at the top of the World!

Ding Ning passes Liu Shiwen although she hasn't played during the past month. The shift is caused by the expiration of Liu Shiwen's bonus points which she earned last year. Liu Shiwen has played the Asian Games (successfully!) but those results will contribute to the next World Rankings...

September was all about the European Team Championships! Furthermore there were Challenge Series World Tour events in Argentina, Belgium and Brazil.

Team Germany and Team Portugal - 2014 European Team Champions - Photos by: ITTF

The European Team Championships were held in Lisbon, Portugal where the homecrowd was of great importance for the Portuguese teams.

In the Men's event Group A was considered the "Group of death" and this turned out to be the case. Germany easily reached the main draw but Portugal, Austria and Hungary ended up all winning one match. It was Portugal gaining the last place by having the best win/loss ratio. The only unexpected team in the main draw was Spain, who emerged above Greece. In the mean time, Germany was getting more and more into trouble. Franziska got injured and Ovtcharov only just finished surgery. Nevertheless they again reached the team final after wins over France and Croatia. There would be a rematch as Portugal defeated both Russia and Sweden in 4 matches. Lifted by a big crowd Marcos Freitas led his team to their first victory: 3-1.

No big surprises happened in the Women's Championship division as all 8 top seeded countries reached the main draw. Interestingly the main draw went somewhat similar to the men's main draw. Big favourite Germany raced into the final without losing a match against the Netherlands and Sweden. In the final, they also faced a member of group A; Austria. Although both Han Ying and Shan Xiaona needed a 5th deciding set to defeat their opponents the result was a clean sweep: Germany's Women defended their title with another 3-0 victory.

Liu Xin and Liu Dingshuo - 2014 Brazil Open winners - Photos by: ITTF

As many big continental events were played last month, there were no "big" World Tour events... But the smaller Challenge Series events can be just as interesting! Three of these events were organized during the first half of the previous month.

The Brazil Open and Argentina Open turned into a clash of South America vs Asia as especially China and Japan sent out many of their young talents to gather some international experiences.

In Santos the Brazilian Men's team posessed the top 4 seeding spots but the problems with the Chinese were big. One by one all top seeds were eliminated, except for Gustavo Tsuboi. His last hurdle was too much; in the final it was 16-year old Liu Dingshuo who won by 4-2.
Asia dominated in the Women's event with 3 Chinese and 1 Japanese in the semi finals. Shiho Matsudaira could not prevent an all-Chinese final. At the end of the day it was unranked Liu Xin who defeated compatriot Zhu Chaohui for gold.

Liu Song and Gaston Alto, top seeds in Buenos Aires faced a challenge similar to that of their Brazilian neighbours; both were eliminated in the quarter finals. Their opponents, Zhu Cheng and Xue Fei from China eventually reached the final where Zhu Cheng finished it with a 4-2 victory.
In the Women's event Japan held the two top seed spots but both could not convert this into a medal. Haruka Sakai lost her semi final to Fan Siqi, but in the final 15-year old He Zhuojia was even stronger.

While Japan sent it's youngest talents to South America, the more experienced players played on a European field in de Haan, Belgium. Vladimir Samsonov and Dimitrij Ovtcharov were the expected finalists here but Ovtcharov suffered an unexpected loss against Italy's Niagol Stoyanov. With countrymate Mihail Bobocica also losing on the same side of the draw the road to the final seemed clear for Stoyanov... But there was another upset. Simon Arvidsson played the tournament of his life and reached the final where he faced Samsonov. Samsonov kept playing his ever-decent game and decided the final in 5 games.
In the Women's event Georgina Pota was the big champion. In a field filled with Japanese players she found her way to the final where she faced short-pips player Megumi Abe. Pota didn't have many problems with the typical play of Abe and was crowned the winner after a 4-1 victory.
