Wow, it's an honour to have you here. It was a treat to watch your performance during the World Cup :). I especially loved the point where Zhang Jike thought it was all over but you somehow managed to get the ball back on the table. Here are my questions:

1. What did your training consist of before the World Cup? You must have trained a lot to beat players ranked higher than you :)
2. Who is your favourite player?
3. How did you start playing table tennis?

Amazing to have you here Aruna! Like mentioned above, its an honour.
Aruna, what in your opinion, makes the Chinese players stronger than the europeans? did you find that they spin the ball more, have more consistency/power, did you find that ZJK hit better quality balls than the europeans you played (like Shibaev, Appolonia)?

Hmmm.. How would you describe your feelings for having a chance to be qualified in the Quarter Finals especially when you knew that you will be having a match with Zhang Jike? :)

I practiced 4 hours per day before the World Cup and I always do once in a week physical training ,I started playing when I was 7 years on the street and it was like a joke then because I never thought I could go this far and my favourite player so far is China's Ma long because of his unbelievable forehand apin

i think the Chinese started more early than almost everyone. In the world, some of them started at age 5 or7 and this makes them learn more faster.
they are most faster and they get things about opponent easily than anyone,I mean they get to know opponent mistakes than other players in the world.
their level of preparation Is of superb one and more attention is giving to table tennis in China when compared to other countries where football is the main sporting priority.
to my point of view, the Europeans are getting closer to them but these CHINESE are just unbelievable as they will never relent to improve, they keep working header day by day.

however, their rubbers are not easy to play as I think their rubbers is one of the weapons used against other players

great performance at düsseldorf ! you must have enjoyed the athmosphere and the support you received! hope you can keep it up!

I was always wondering why Nigeria is the only "black african" country that has some very good and talented players while there seems to be no real tabletennis scene in any other country in that area? Is there a scene in Nigeria or do those players go somewhere else at the early stages ?

And what do you exactly mean is the advantage with chinese rubbers in the previous post?

Nigerians have great fighting spirit to learn things faster as a way of surviver to them and they are always believing in themeselves, unfortunately table tennis is not giving priority in nigeria yet we keep working harder to improve.
not every players in nigeria has a better place to practice in order to improve but they easily managed with the materials they have at hand and keep the struggle going.

in other countries in Africa like Ghana, they are also doing great to improve and we beleieve with time things will get better in Africa and produce more great players that can challenge the world.

concerning the rubbers using by the Chinese, their rubbers have almost double effect of the other rubbers like Joola, donic and so on and the spin on their rubber is more stronger than others rubbers brand.

In nigeria, practicing was not that regular as players practice on their own years ago,but presently there are regularly practicing in nigeria conducted by coaches for former players like segun Toriola, micheal oyebode and others.and with this new development nigeria might return back to international scene with great talented players.

in Europe is more better to practice because you have upto date equipment to practice with all the time and moreover in Europe, there great players to practice with

I am playing with Joola rhyzym p rubbers and Joola roskorfp emotion blade
i serve mostly without spin as to be able to initiate attack as fast as possible but I serve with spin also depending on the opponent.
finally,my service depends mostly on which service that is giving me more winning points

My perfect skill so far is forehand topspin and I am sure of doing all things with my forehand, well I thought it was not over then I put in more effort to run for that best point and suddenly I saw the ball on the side of jike against and I won the point,so great moment

Question:
Aruna, your forehand is superb! So do you think your forehand is more powerful than many current top players (it seems to me yes)?

How would you compare your forehand attacks with Wang Liqin's?

(Anyway, about the Chinese team: as I'm a Hong Konger and can often watch what Liu Guoliang and others say, I would add that Liu is a shockingly intelligent person. And, table tennis in China (not Hong Kong though) is completely institutionalized and the government is willing to invest a very huge amount of money into this sport, partly because of the need of national glory. But I think Aruna you're way more talented than most Chinese people in table tennis.) Best wishes for your career, hope you'll always stay in the top 10 in the world.

Great to see another pro sign up for TTD.

Communicating in more than one language isn't the easiest thing to do in this world (even if it is fun !)

What is your country's amature situation like that feeds the potential to produce pro players? My country is huge and we are only now moving a little in the right direction.

Hey!
Congrats on your success!!
I wanted to know that why can't you or other players use the chinese rubbers like the DHS Hurricane 3 neo (National version). Are they not available to you or the players of other country? I have never seen others using these rubbers.
I am currently using DHS hurricane 3 neo (commercial version). It is not that great. The accuracy is not good. Mostly times I am hitting the ball outside the table.
For backhand I am using Rakza 7 soft. The biggest problem I am facing is the service receive. I am not able to control the longer serves mostly time I try to chop the ball and it goes out of the table. Could you please advice me something on that.
Thanks

If you had bothered to read the earlier posts, you would see that Aruna has already stated what equipment he uses. Also perhaps questions about individual equipment needs, and corresponding equipment reviews are silly - and best left for your individual coaches. I dont think its an appropriate use of a pro's time on this forum.

Hi Aruna, I'm a big fan of Zhang Jike, and became to know you through your match with Zhang Jike in the World Cup. This is the first time most of Chinese TT fans saw you play and we were all extremely impressed by your game. You played fearlessly and your forehand is so powerful. Actually I think you won more points than Zhang Jike in forehand vs forehand rallies. I'm looking forward to seeing you in more tournaments.

I have a few questions for you:

1. Did you know that you are going to play well in the World Cup before it began or you are surprised by your performance in the tournament also?
2. When are we going to see you play again? Are you going to play in any world tours soon?
3. I saw a picture of you with Zhang Jike. Did you take the picture after your match with him? What's your impression of him?
4. Did you have time to talk with your favorite player Ma Long?
5. If you prefer, you don't have to answer the last question: what do you think of Zhang Jike's emotional celebration after winning the World Cup?

Ma long the best

How does it feel to win a point like the one at 4:31 in front of such a big audience, my guess is that it feels kind of great but can you sometimes feel that it's hard to keep the focus on the next points after doing something like that? :D

I can say it's not that easy to keep focusing on the next sets of points and once you remember it's not over until it's over, that's going to make you keep focused and give more attention.

5. If you prefer, you don't have to answer the last question: what do you think of Zhang Jike's emotional celebration after winning the World Cup?

i was not surprised with my performances in World Cup because I really worked harder for the big event like that.i believed I could do better than before initially and the confidence kept me going.i had great winnings before the World Cup and with that more self confidence materialised in World Cup.

i will only start to play from February next year by God's grace from Kuwait and Qatar open.

i took the picture with him during the breakfast of the next day after we played one night ago and he is such a great guy with full of humbleness and respect.

i really did not get time to talk with Ma long because I did not see him before I left,I guessed he was so tired and did not come for breakfast the day I left germany

his celebration was not bad at all just that people counted it to be another thing, after you Have an unbelievable winning you might not know what you were doing at that happiest moment and you might do crazy things, his celebration was not bad.

however,in glasgow at the commonwealth games, I also took off my short and showed my boxer only after we won against India in a tension packed bronze medal match and I was really not aware of what I was doing because I was so happy that I got carried away that moment.

If you loose to a player who you know has lower skill set than and maybe it wasnt a good day for you. How do you handle or evaluate yourself? What would be the first thing that you will think about what went wrong that day?

I have started videoing some of my matches and the answer is quite simple when you loose against less skilled player.
1. Wrong tactics.
2. You don't play your game and your position yourself to play your strong shots.
3. You get tight and play even worst.

Conclusion: Try to always play your game and never underestimate anyone.

hey buddy, great to have you here :) I have 2 questions:

1. How did your coach helped you in the game vs. ZJK, is there anything specific he told you or isn't there much things to say against chinese players?

2. What do you think about rubber boosting? Normally all the players are doing it and furthermore it increases the speed of the game so the players have to get more skilled which would make the game more attractive? Or whats your opinion about tuning and boosting rackets?

Thanks buddy so nice of you ;) best regards man ;)

that's fine. but usually the answers are the same: either a dodgy "i don't advocate breaking the rules, but will not say anything neither for or against boosting" or they just say "yes, we all boost" which can potentially get them in trouble.

Hey Champ

Firstly, congrats in making WR30
WR 20 is just 1 or 2 wins away and since the Chinese now fear you, things will become more exciting :)

I have a question for you.
Could you share your life story and what happened to get you from national level to WR100 level and from there progressing to WR30.
Baring in mind the lack of TT development/funding etc in Africa and the suitation in your home country.
Basically the main question is: What was the main turning point for you from being a normal table tennis player in Nigeria, in becoming world level player?

I think your story and journey will be crucial for other kids in Africa, as currently there is "no hope" written all around the sport.

PS - I recently became a coach and to help develop TT in South Africa. So your story can be a truce case study for us to study and follow.
Thanks in advance

Tony

I venture an answer... since I have played Internationally for Algeria many years ago. First of all, NIGERIA has always had a very good standard in Table Tennis and the best in Africa. They have always had players capable of making that transition from great to TOP 50. So please don't underestimate and "bundle" the whole of Africa, as it it was one single country and standard..... Just look at the record from over 20 years ago and you will see i am right. Whats lacking though is simple: moving from great player to top top player, takes to play in a solid league week in week out and play lots and lots of tournaments against the best in the world.
NO different from any European country. Top players are Chinese and once in a while you see a player for one European country emerging. Thats all. Bottom line... there is China and.... everyone else.. including Africa.

No doubt being a Nigerian or Egyptian will be "better" than most countries in Africa.
That only helps the "development process", it won't make you become top in the world.

According to your view, it is playing leagues in Europe that helped?

I read an article from Musa, he said that when he won the Commonwealth Gold, the Nigerian gov gave him nothing, while the soccer players all get houses and cars.
So it is interesting to see how attractive is TT in Africa's top table tennis country - and what was the turning point for Quadri and how it made him to become a professional today (a professional where he can play in Europe and hopefully manage a living from there)

He said that after his match with you, he told Ma Long that your level are at the top 32. I guess players know better;)

LOL :). Table Tennis pays nothing the world over. The last world in Dusseldorf were won by Jian j. K. and the winner gets something like 40K $ !! its peanuts.

So don't play Table tennis if you seek a livelihood from it.

However, YES.. playing top league from the age of 16 or so and top competitions week in week out will make the best of every country, become there best in the world.. except China of course.. they will always be the very best.. because of the status and following it has in China..

I guess he is right, people said the same thing but like you know in Africa we hadly get sponsors to play tournament regularly and that's the main problem African players have.
i think we have more great players in Africa that are so much more better than me and they have no opportunity to play tournaments.
