Hello everyone!
Recently i had an argument with a colleague from my club who thinks he knows everything about table tennis when that is far from true and in his ignorance he wanted to belittle the accomplishments of Zoran Primorac by claiming that he won nothing worth of mention in his 20 year long career.
That is when i told him about his 2 World Cup titles and of course he couldn't accept that he may be wrong but he continued with : " Well who the hell cares for the World Cup anyway."
This little introduction has forced me to seek some arguments and that's how i found out that Wang Liqin has 9 World Cup appearances and 0 golds. I've been searching through internet because i wanted to find out who on earth eliminated him 9 times, but i couldn't find any good source, just occasional clipps on youtube. That's where i wanted to ask for your help, to help me complete the list about his 9 appearances and his 9 eliminations.
This is what i got so far:
2000 lost to Ma Lin or Kim Taek so in semifinal
2001 lost to Samsonov in final (only final he has reached)
2003 lost to Kreanga or Ma Lin in semifinal
2004 lost to Chiang Peng Lung
2005 lost to Timo Boll in quarterfinal
2006 lost to Ma Lin or Wang hao in semifinal
2007 lost to Ryu Seung Min in semifinal
Thank you

So a hypothetical amalgamation of Wang Liqin and Ma Lin i.e. "Ma Liqin or Wang Lin" would be an extraordinary multi winner of both world cup and world championships and plus a single olympics champion (Ma Lin's contribution from 2008 Beijing Olympics). That really puts it in perspective how incredible it would be if Zhang Jike wins Rio 2016 and becomes a double grand slam champion in a space of like 5 years. That would be one for the record books...

Yes but you have to bear in mind that in WLQ's time there was no limit of the number of the Chinese in the Olympic games. So far ZJK has only had to beat Wang Hao who was always a comfortable opponent for him. If we had a mega ZJK vs Ma Long clash in Rio that would be something quite different.

Of course there was a limit in Olympics and wttc. Winning the wttc is more difficult than the olympics though...from the 32 round and after 90% of the players were top50 of world ranking. Winning 3 wttc like WLQ did is an immense achievement. On the other hand Ma lin won 5 world cups and wang liqin not a single one. All 3 grand slam tournaments can be considered equal when it comes to the last 8 men standing...in theory off course, the reality is quite different with lots of surprises
