Timo Boll Is The 2017 Korean Open Champion!

This year’s Korea Open saw some of the world’s best come together in Incheon to battle it out once again from the 20th to the 23rd of April. The men’s event saw some exciting battles and some huge points by some top Asian and European Players. The men’s singles was dominated by the Germans with Timo Boll and Patrick Franziska progressing to the final stages beating some top opponents.

Timo Boll Champion of the Korea Open

Top seed Jeoung Youngsik the home favourite was defeated in the early stages by Romanian player Hunor Szocs. This lead to an opening up of the draw for the rest of the players to take advantage of with the difference in levels. 2ND seed Chuang Chih Yuan was happy to see the Korean favourite go out early in the tournament. Other familiar players such as Timo Boll and Marcos Freitas were able to progress through the draw. The last 32 saw the Korean player Lim Jonghoon show his incredible level and that he is certainly a player to watch for the future. He beat Japanese chopper Yuto Maramatsu 4-0.

The last 16 saw some intense battles with the top seeds being tested. Chuang Chih Yuan was beaten by lower ranked Lim Jonghoon 4-3 in a closely contested match. Other players such as Marcos Freitas and Kenta Matsudaira were victorious. Timo Boll showed his incredible level to beat the experienced Gao Ning 4-0. The most suprising player of the tournament was Patrick Franziska who has recently come back from injury, he beat the inform Koki Niwa 4-1.

In the quarter finals Maharu Yoshimura beat Ricardo Walther, Timo Boll beat Kenta Matsudaira 4-0, and Patrick Franziska destroyed Kristian Karlsson 4-0. Another big win for Korean player Lim Jonghoon was over the Portugese number 1 Marcos Freitas 4-1. This is definitely a player to watch for the future.
In the semi-finals, Timo Boll managed to beat Maharu Yoshimura 4-2. In the other half of the draw Franziska met the inform Lim Jonghoon. The German played an incredible match and won 4-1.

The final was played on Sunday between the two German teammates and good friends. On the day, Timo was too good for Patrick Franziska and he won the match convincingly 4-0.

This concluded an excellent tournament. It was great to see some players such as Timo Boll and Patrick Franziska show some high level ahead of the world championships in Germany which are in a months time!
