Wow! What a World Tour, the 2013 Japan Open ITTF World Tour displayed an extreme amount of surprises making this one of the most unpredicted table tennis events ever! Seeds were dropping out left, right and center, for example Jun Mizutani, Wang Liqin and Koki Niwa all crashed out at the quarter final stages. The star who shocked the show was Japan's Shiono Masato! On route to the Men's Singles Final the defensive player who is currently ranked at 188 on the ITTF World Rankings had a remarkable run of form defeating world number 6 (Chuang Chih Yuan), 28 (Kenta Matsudaira), 58 (Li Hu), 19 (Koki Niwa) and 26 (Chen Chien-An).

Shiono Masato faced China's Xu Chenhao in the Men's Singles Final showdown. In the semi finals Masato Shiono defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chen Chien-An in five games, with China's Xu Chenhao claiming a final place in an epic seven set match against Korea’s Kim Minseok. These two finalist have created history in that they both had to qualify through the qualification stages of the event, this has never happened in World Tour history. It is even sighted by ittf.com that Masato Shiono payed his own entry fee,

In the final host nations defensive player Shiono Masato found no problems with Xu Chenhao's attacking game and defeated the young China player in 4 straight sets with scores 11-3, 11-8, 11-6, 11-4. After the match Shiono expressed that he felt Xu Chenhao had a lot of pressure on him as he was representing China. Shiono said he had no pressure whats so ever and loved every minute of the experience. The defender also noted that he will play in the upcoming US Open and show the world this was no fluke.

      Mens Singles Final

Impressive? What world ranking will Shiono Masato have on the July ITTF World Ranking list? Congratulations to both players reaching the men's singles final! What an achievement!

Hmm, make me recall the scene in 2003 WTTC, Joo See Hyuk shocked the world when he entered the Final. Another defense star!

But Shiono is already 27 years old I think. Joo was younger these days.

Impressive for him to just seemingly come from nowhere to capture such big results, I wonder how it all came together, if he's changed something in his training or something like that.

He is not a professional player or plays table tennis as a first occupation. He works for a Japanese company (maybe toyato). That is the most respecting part.
