A new tournament on the English table tennis scene, the TEES SPORT K2 SUSSEX OPEN, took place in Crawley at the end of last month and proved to be successful. Top British and World players including Olympic and Commonwealth Games representatives battled it out for the total prize fund of £6,400! Steve Pound the organiser confirmed a strong 150 player entry including international players such as Daniel Zwickl, Abdel-Kader Salifou, Darius Knight, Gavin Rumgay, Liam Pitchford, Andrew Baggaley and more. England's number 1 and Butterfly player Liam Pitchford who represents Ochsenhausen in the German Budesliga became the Champion when he defeated Scottish no.1 Gavin Rumgay in an epic final. Liam overcome the former champion in 4 sets (6-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6) and collected the £2,000 first prize.
Many upsets took place throughout the tournament with England no.10 Matt Ware who caused one of the biggest shocks of the tournament defeating Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Andrew Baggaley 3-1. Elsewhere in the draw England's David McBeath against the odds defeated French no.5 and World no.104 Abdel-Kader Salifou.
Steve Pound the tournament organiser had this to say, "The tournament went really well. I was pleased with the high standard of entry which made it the strongest line-up of any tournament in the UK this year. I would like to thank the volunteers, players and supporters who helped me put on a brilliant weekend which we hope to make an annual event and make it even bigger next year."
