Today on the 17th August the men's singles round 2 took place at the Harmony China Open 2013 - ITTF World Tour with seeds surprisingly dropping out. The nation to cause the biggest upset was Japan, with the mighty duo of Kenta Matsudaira and Koki Niwa pulling off outstanding victories over China's Wang Hao and Yan An.

Men's Singles Round 2

In round 2, majority of the seeds progressed however 2 noticeable upsets took place. Host nations Wang Hao stumbled to the ever improving Kenta Matsudaira of Japan in 4 straight sets (11-8, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7). Kenta utilized his aggressive style of play attacking Hao's serve quickly to become the dominant player in the point. Often Kenta switched Wang Hao wide to his forehand to keep Hao guessing. Elsewhere in round 2 Kenta's compatriot Koki Niwa had an epic encounter against rising star Yan An of China. Both players gave their all. Koki Niwa raced into a 3 set to 1 lead with Yan An giving all his efforts to level the match score at 3 sets each. However it was not meant to be for Yan An as Koki Niwa clinched the 7th set 13-11. Full match score (7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6, 4-11, 5-11, 13-11). Koki Niwa and Kenta Matsudaira now face one another in the quarter finals.

Japan are doing very well in this competition, perhaps Jun Mizutani withdrawing has put less pressure on the Japanese team to succeed?
