The men’s singles event had a new champion as the title was secured by Austria’s Daniel Habesohn who has never previously competed beyond the third round. Habesohn who is currently ranked at 85 in the men’s world ranking came up against Germany’s Steffan Mengal in the final who has a current world ranking of 144.

It was a tantalising match with Germany’s Mengal leading the final, two sets to nil both of which were closely fought, however Habesohn was able to clinch the next four consecutive sets in order to secure a six game victory. (8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9, 11-5)

This meant that Daniel Habesohn not only won his first ITTF World Tour Men’s singles title but he also made history as he became the second ever Austrian to win an ITTF World Tour Men’s Singles event along with one of Austria’s most prestigious players Werner Schlager.

Meanwhile in the women’s event is was the number three seed Austria’s Liu Jia who was able to clinch the singles title, in what was an impressive and intense final against the host nations Georgina Pota, who was occupying the number four seed.

Hungary’s Georgina Pota got off to a flying start in the final posting a three sets to one lead however Liu Jia was able to hold her nerve and fight back hard claiming the next three sets in order to gain the well-deserved title. (8-11, 11-13, 11-6, 3-11, 11-6, 11-8, 12-10)

This was the thirty one year old Austrian’s fourth ITTF World Tour Women’s Singles title of her career and her ninth appearance in the final. Liu Jia’s previous wins have been in 2004 in Rio de janeiro, in 2008 in Berlin and in 2012 in the Czech Republic city of Olomouc. Liu Jia remains to be the only ever Austrian to win a women’s singles title on the ITTF World Tour.

It was joy and celebrations all round for Austria as it was the first time at an ITTF World Tour tournament that they have won both the Men’s and Women’s Singles titles, a day I’m sure they will never forget.
