Fan Zhendong & Liu Guoyang Secure Gold At The Youth Olympic Games 2014!

Fan Zhendong has been crowned the 2014 Youth Olympic Men’s singles Champion, the seventeen year old Chinese player who has already achieved so much at the World Championships was able to clinch the Gold at the 2014 Youth Olympic Championships overcoming Japan’s Yuto Muramatsu in the final.

Fan Zhendong and Yuto Muramatsu occupied the top two seed positions, but Fan Zhendong’s experience shone through giving him an advantage in the final match. The Japanese player demonstrated his defensive skills throughout the match and managed to take at 2-1 lead, however with the help of his coach is was Fan Zhendong who managed to make a strong comeback regaining control of the match which he was able to seal with a 4-2 win (11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-4).

The men’s singles bronze medal match was between Brazil’s Hugo Calderano and Yang Heng Wei of Chinese Taipei, Calderano was able to take a strong 3-0 lead before the Chinese Taipei player fought back hard with two solid sets however he was unable to keep up his rhythm and Hugo Calderano sealed the sixth and final set to clinch the bronze (11-9, 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 12-10).

Meanwhile in the women’s event it was second seed and Chinese representative Liu Guoyang who put in a strong performance overcoming the top seed from Hong Kong Doo Hoi Kem 4-1 (11-6, 11-5, 6-11, 11-1, 11-3). In the bronze medal match it was the fourth seed Lily Zhang who was able to overcome third seed Miyu Kato of Japan in four games to two in order to clinch the bronze medal, (10-12, 11-9, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9,11-8).
