What exactly does he mean?
I think SYS has a very good chance at the 3rd spot. Age is the only thing working against her and given the titles she has won, that is not saying much. For me, the team is DN and LSW with SYS as 3rd player and XD player. Only injuries or a major setback to either LSW or DN will affect this.
Agree, SYS is the more economically-sound option as third person if China decides to go with both DN and LSW. SYS is only 20 y/o this year and can surely last till 2024 which makes her viable for at least two cycles. Considering that the career lifespans of Chinese players have been increasing of late (subject to maintenance of form), 2028 is not out of the question for SYS as well. Meanwhile, CM is already 26 y/o this year and it's unlikely that she will be as competitive at 30 y/o, particularly since her playing style is very physically-demanding. Plus, her lack of any major titles reflects very badly on her when even SYS and WMY have already clinched regional-level titles.
Actually based on the timeline that Qin Zhijian had drawn up during the press conference, CNT might be skipping a few more events?
According to him, they will leave for German Open on the second day of Lunar New Year (26 Jan). After the conclusion of German Open (2 Feb), they will head to Haikou for a month-long, closed-door training camp (i.e. entirety of February). Following which, they will take a two/three-days break in Beijing before starting on the WTTTC preparations.Quote:
I suspect Asian Cup (28 Feb-1 Mar) will be held somewhere in Hainan (or even Haikou itself) so that the Chinese candidates (whomever they might be) can make it. From the sounds of it, Qatar Open (3-8 Mar) is either forfeited as well or remains undecided although it's usually a means of ascertaining the results of their training.
I think if CNT pick DN and LSW, SYS is a shoe-in for third.
Since the only good reason to pick DN at all, is if they stuck rigidly to their rubric of choosing via big tournament experience/performance. In which case SYS is actually the third most achieved player in recent times anyway, since DN/LSW have taken all the Olympics/World Championships and World Cups off the table.
If the CNT are getting cold feet, which I think is justified, it would be that DN is probably the only player in the mix that Ito is an actual favourite over right now, rather than just a heavy upset chance. Then, if anything IMO SYS's chances only increase, since she's both the next most achieved (LSW is probably safe) AND she's in good form, unlike DN.
The thing about DN is that a lot depends on what they think her health prospects are like. I know her basic style doesn't do well against ITo, but it is not like Ito wins those matches easily. DN is still a beast under the right conditions (whenever she feels a challenge) and when you look at the Trials, she actually performed the best against ZYL (funny but true). For me, I don't doubt she can round into form and deliver under pressure. Ito hasn't beaten her like a drum when they played, it has been close matches decided by close games.
Whoever is selected will be prepared to the hilt. The main reason I don't see Chen Meng going is that any failure on her part will be hard to excuse. At least there are excuses for Sun Yingsha and Ding Ning.
I agree about Chen Meng, I rate her as having almost no chance. If the CNT go by their traditional way of selection, she has 0 case at all.
If the CNT get cold feet, and care more about form, then I think SYS still has a better case than CM. I doubt they will completely abandon the big event focus for selection, since the Olympics... is a big event. I feel like the CNT views CM similarly to ZYL, even if she is in generally better form.
Well, ZYL was really only the 'golden child' because she was the disciple of Li Sun and hence granted more opportunities to play in the semis- and finals of team tournaments (which in her defence she has done well in). But the truth is she has lost the most matches to foreigners and clinched the least number of World Tour titles. Someone on the Chinese forum has compiled an overview of how the core players have performed till date (after Rio to the end of 2019).

Ito Mima high on the list :-)
ZYL has always had a hard time playing DN, which brings up the next point.
She was waiting for DN to retire and then inherit the throne. It really shows in that interview. Many LSW fans have long argued ZYL focused on beating LSW. Who knew Ito would strike out of the blue?
One name that stands out is Mima on the list, judging by what you mentioned looks like LSW & DN will be doing lot of work to prep against her which looks like certain semi final clash for one of the Chinese girls.
I'm sure CNT team coaches will make right decisions, not just the players reputations on the line but also the coaches.
One point of note when looking at that table.
Some fans argue the number of loss for LSW is skewed, saying she has been strategically avoiding Ito for much of 2019.

It’s not like Liu Shiwen was completed wrecked by Ito the two times that she lost. She simply used the wrong tactics and played to Ito’s strengths. I doubt any self-respecting world champion would back down from the opportunity to prove that they are indeed the world’s best.
While I wouldn't occlude that possibility, I also think that it must be a 'strategy' that has been approved or instructed by the higher-ups. She was suspended by Kong Ling Hui previously under the allegation of "avoidance of matches out of fear" so it's unlikely that she would risk her Olympics chances by repeating the 'same offence', at least not on her own. Lol ~
Looking only at 2019 (from SYS perspective and most recent), she only lost once compared to the others, and only to Ito!
Asian Cup is coming. There’ll be likely a LSW vs Ito showdown that makes an otherwise mundane tournament a much anticipated event. The pressure is on LSW’s shoulders. If she wins, she’ll be THE one to play singles. But a loss would put the whole selection process on women side into chaos.
Of course she’d rather play against LSW than CM or SYS. For LSW in the coming Asian Cup, the cloud over her head thickens as the following scenarios go:
1. LSW beats Ito in the final. The cloud is lifted. LSW is on her way to play singles in Tokyo.
2. LSW beats ZYL in the final who beats Ito in the semi. The cloud is still there. Not much would change.
3. ZYL beats LSW in the semi and meets Ito in the final. The cloud thickens. Fans and coaches other than MaLin all think another attempt to avoid defeat is tried, fair or not.
4. LSW gets beaten by Ito in the final. The cloud turns into pouring rain. LGL and his company start to experience sleepless nights.
Isn't that a good thing then?
Make sure have 2 best go in, if any doubts not pick them. Have players convince the coaches.
4 players will play off anyway to qualify for singles, Ma Long qualified for men's and LXX qualified for ladies for Rio games, so technically players need really find form for qualifyers to win a spot in singles, thoughts?
Looks like Asian Cup will be postponed. The sports bureau has cancelled all events up to April due to corona virus outbreak. Not sure fans would ever get a chance to see LSW-Ito duel prior to the Olympic Games.
The CNT just ended its post military training training and is heading out to Germany on Sunday. LSW, CM, XX, and FZD all got special one-on-one sessions with LGL. Seems CM has better chance playing singles than SYS at this point.

Any official announcement that the Asian Cup will be postponed? Because JTTA just stated that they will still send players to join the Asian Cup (Hainan) and China Open (Shenzhen) since these 2 cities are far away from Wuhan.

Well, it’s official, Asian Cup will be postponed. Also the plan for CNT is to return to Hainan after German Open for a month of closed door training before heading out to Korea for WTTC. Looks like they’re going to stay abroad for training and attending tours for a while. It makes all the sense considering the current situation back home. Hope things get well soon.
Well, German Open is not over yet. But so far WCQ has definitely strengthened his position as fourth player due LJK’s loss to a lesser foreign player and LGY’s not-so-flattering performance. CM played poorly and that will not help when it comes to competing for the second singles spot against SYS who has played reasonably well.
According to the prospectus for the 2020 Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament (Singles), it states that "7.8 Players of the same NOC shall be separated in different groups during Stage 1 (if applicable) and in different halves (if possible) in the knock-out stage." Thoughts? Seems likely that separation by association will still apply to Tokyo Olympics?
Theoretically, Mima Ito has a chance in the July ITTF rating to become nr.2 ....But this is a very small chance ...
I'm interested - C.M. has such a high current rating that in the July ITTF rating can be, if not the first, then the second ....
Has it already been decided that CM will be on the team?
I think it really depends on how Ito performs for the next few months. If every top Chinese woman can beat her with relative ease, then tradition will likely prevail and CM will be excluded. I mean, the only bargaining chip CM really has is her 100% winning record against Ito to date.
Basically, the CNT can ... hmm ... without any problems, to secure first place in the ITTF ranking for the SYS before the Olympics ....:o.... But for the LSW ...... I have doubts ....:(
Mima seems to be really on against Chinese ladies, DN beat her comfortably last week.
Zhu Yuling is a strange case as been struggling against Mima but a real bogie for her own teammates, Liu Shiwen and in recent times Chen Meng....
Sun Yingsha had really disappointing German Open, especially in both doubles and XD against Japanese teams, so feel needa big few months if she is to be on the team. I feel she also matches up well against Mima, but so do others.
My opinion is that Mima Ito has quite a good chance of staying in 3rd - 4th place in the July ITTF rating .. And no.3 or no.4 - there is practically no difference for seeding ....
Yes ... wait ...
Although, for example, the March ITTF rating for the WS Top 6 determined ....All six remain in their places (including Ito, regardless of the result in Hungary Open - 14720min, 15080max) ....
And hereinafter ... Deductions of old bonuses for March 2019 (SYS and LSW), replacing the results of WTTTC .(ITO,LSW)...
What would happen to rule 4.5.2.3. in that case? What's the point of passing the proposition just to backtrack later?
