フジテレビが26日に生中継した「東京オリンピック 卓球 混合ダブルス決勝」（後10・20～11・00）の平均世帯視聴率は24・6％（ビデオリサーチ調べ、関東地区）だったことが27日、分かった。瞬間最高視聴率は午後10時23分の40・5％。新種目の混合ダブルスで水谷隼（32＝木下グループ）、伊藤美誠（20＝スターツ）組が日本勢初の金メダルを確定させた瞬間だった。
番組は前半と後半に分かれて中継。前半部分（後8・00～同10・20）の平均世帯視聴率は18・3％。瞬間最高視聴率は午後10時19分の38・6％。最終セットで9―2になった直後の場面だった。
水谷、伊藤組は決勝で第1シードの許キン、劉詩ブン組（中国）に4―3で逆転勝ち。五輪ではシングルス、ダブルス、団体戦で28戦全敗だった中国勢を下し、1988年ソウル五輪から採用された卓球で日本勢の悲願だった頂点を極めた。第1ゲームを5─11で落とすと、続くゲームも7─11。しかし、第3ゲームを11―8で奪って流れを引き寄せ、第4ゲームも11―9で取ってタイとした。試合が進むにつれ、水谷と伊藤は攻撃的なプレーを展開。第5ゲームを11―9で制して勝利に王手をかけた。第6ゲームは6―11で落としたが、運命の最終セットを11―6で制した。
同番組には、元卓球台湾代表の江宏傑（32）と今月8日に離婚した卓球女子五輪メダリストの福原愛さん（32）がコメンテーターとして登場。ネット上では「久々に福原愛さん出てきて良かった」「元気そうでよかった」「可愛くなってる」「久しぶりに見た」「今の卓球人気のきっかけは間違いなく愛ちゃんのおかげ」「マイクの持ち方綺麗」「仕事バリバリ頑張って」という声が寄せられた。
