  1. Best way to return short serves?

If you're faced with someone who doesn't open up too well then there's not much point is returning short. I personally like to return short because most of my opponents can open up pretty well on both wings, but most aren't very good at flicks so if I return short and they can't do a quality...

Not sure, at least in the 4 teams in my group as all of them were Asians  The beginner group had some hardcore sandbagging going on. I saw one guy who I know has been USATT 1900s rated the past couple of years. He played in the beginner (<1700) group next to my group's table and he lost...
  3. Does anybody else mentally fall apart against pure pushers or weird styles?

I think that might be a different issue. I'd probably have trouble handling @TensorBackhand because he likes the clean game and my game is pretty clean, will be cleaner once I develop a less side-spinny FH! But it sounds like his issue is that he's having trouble handling the opponent's shots...

No, I went to the Oakland Chinatown one. I actually requested this weekend off intending to play in the ICC one, but then I got invited to this one by my teammates so I went to this instead.
  5. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

So I was debating whether to play TT today. I usually go to the Alameda club on Sundays to get some match play in, while focus on practicing the rest of the days. Since I already played some matches in the tournament yesterday, I didn't really want to play more matches. I thought I'd just stay...
  6. Does anybody else mentally fall apart against pure pushers or weird styles?

Me too, but I think that just means I'm not fundamentally solid.
  7. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

Yeah, I wish I got to play half as many yesterday! Definitely don't have the stamina for 18 though lol.

Put your hand flat on a table with all your joints touching the table. Now try pressing down hard with just your fingertips, can you keep your joints on the table?
  9. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

I think in most attacking shots you can't use the finger tip. Pressing with the fingertip kind of lifts your PIP and DIP joints off the rubber, giving you less power. It's the same if you press with the thumb tip with your BH.

Where is your index finger when you do this? I see the pros often have their index finger very near the bottom of the blade, but I would think for more effective index finger use you would need it a little higher up the blade, no? I see some people move the index finger up for service returns...

Finished the tournament, lost my 3rd match :( Crazy that it went from 9-5 just for the group stage, playing 3 singles and 1 doubles for me. Our team simply wasn't good enough to advance, so no regrets there. If we didn't play all 5 players we might have made it to the next round, but that only...

At a teams tournament right now, my goodness it's slow lol. 4 teams for a table, started at 9:30 and it's 5 hrs later and we're still in group stage with the last 2 team matches of our group to go. I lost the first singles match against a Jpen player. He switched to his BH side mid-match with I...
  13. What's the best way to practice near table counter-loop?

Yeah, the high ones should just be smashed. It's the low ones that need to be counter-looped. For those I find it helpful to keep a more compact motion. Don't fully extend your arm on the backswing and really focus on contracting your biceps at contact. Also helps to use a more sidespin loop...
  14. Does training in the basement make sense?

As long as you're mindful in training then any training is better than no training. If you have a good robot but not much space, you can at least train for close to the table stuff. Services, receives, pushes long or short, FH flicks, banana flicks, strawberry flicks, pancake flicks, sideswipes...
  15. FH sideswipe / fade

Hah, that's my stroke as well. I use it primarily against topspins to my FH, and I push it too long/wide too often because of my wildly big swing.

The hand drop is fairly subtle, just a couple inches, which is why I didn't realize it before by simply watching the pros play. I'm actually not too sure how I drop the racket, I just make sure the racket stays just below the ball before the forward swing. Thinking about it, I might actually...
  17. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

Yeah, the reason I started practicing them more these days is because I'm facing a lot of people who are just as aggressive as me with 2nd and 3rd ball attacks and serve short/half-long most of the time. I need to find an edge in there, so practicing a lot of services and receives these days!
  18. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

I'm actually practicing a good amount of service receives these days. I find that service receive strains footwork and decision-making the most, so training against service receives can really help you in those areas, which in turn helps a lot in just about everything else. I had a pretty good...
  19. Paris Olympic Games 2024

The source of this story, as stated in the article, is the Daily NK, a NED funded news agency. The NED is perhaps the most notorious American NGO that's created by the US congress and designed to conduct overt operations under the guise of a NGO whereas beforehand they would've been conducted...
