They are the same thing to most people. Some people would use the term "loop" to apply only to heavy topspin strokes, and some people say "loop" vs "loop drive", the former being spin, the latter being spin and speed, but in the end, topspin is the same as loop.

Greetings,

Personally, I've always thought of "loop" to refer to where the arm action is vertical, whereas "topspin (drive)" refers to a more normal forward arm action.

"Loop"

"Topspin"

At 1:08, Waldner does a fast backhand topspin, to over-power Liu's backhand block, and then follows up with a forehand topspin to win the point.

Kindest regards,

James

Hello from Taichung Taiwan.

I define a real loop as a top spin ball that doesn't skid when it hits the table. That means there must be a pretty good spin to speed ratio. I will let those interested do the math. A good loop will jump out fast and low at the opponent. I like to change things up and every once in a while hit a loop that bounces out low beneath the opponents paddle.
