Hello again everyone and welcome to the 6th episode of the TableTennisDaily podcast, today we are joined by the current World Ping Pong champion, 3 time English National Champion and London 2012 Olympian Andrew Baggaley. Although Andrew is a world class regular table tennis player and currently plays in the top division in the Polish League. He takes 1 month out of playing every year to play sandpaper table tennis and compete in the “world championship of ping pong”.

These world championships are broadcast on British mainstream TV channel sky sports in front of a large audience in the world famous Alexandra palace, and the winner of the event gets £20,000 in prize money. This year's championships start on Friday the 19th of January and finish on the Sunday the 22nd. In this episode we focus on the sandpaper game, discussing with Andrew how it is growing in popularity through world leading promotional company Matchroom sport, and how it differs to regular table tennis.

We also speak to Andrew about his victory last year and what he has been doing to prepare for this year's fastly approaching competition.
We would like to thank Andrew for giving his time from his busy schedule to talk to us! Hope you guys enjoy this slightly different episode and be sure to like and share it and also subscribe to the TableTennisDaily channel on YouTube and iTunes.

it's the first time I see sandpaper, one must say that people aren't interested about in France.

It seems the british like sand paper, does somebody know why ?

That is strange that French people are not so interested. It is becoming very popular in the UK. I think because it is held in London, a lot of British fans go to watch the event. This gets more people trying to qualify and compete because they get inspired watching. Also Sky Sports is the most popular sports channel in the UK and people watch it on the TV and then want to have a go at playing it :)

The sandpaper stuff is certainly different ! There's at least one thing though you don't get from watching this on TV; sometime last year I was lucky enough to see Andrew having a knock with a club player who was curious about the sandpaper game, and the din was indescribable - it certainly drowned out the normal games going on on the other tables ! If you had half-a-dozen tables all playing with sandpaper bats it would be a real ear-defenders job.

Very true, there is a very loud sound! The other day Dean Cundy was practicing at the club preparing for the World Champs and a player who was in a league game asked Dean to stop playing as the noise was distracting him during his league match.

I don't often quote myself, but sometimes it saves time...
I think that there is such a big acceptance and such a buzz about this form of our beloved tabletennis, is because this type of the game is not that much based on spin like tabletennis with inverted rubbers, and hence much easier to understand for the average Joe who doesn't really know what spin is and what spin can do.

But please don't get me wrong. No belittleling right here.

These players are really good, and honestly i'm not sure if i could beat one of them, even if i was allowed to use inverted rubbers, since i hardly play against players using these kinda rackets...

Very nice Podcast @Dan ! Even though the focus was on Ping Pong , I liked the part about Chinese Hurricane rubber ! This is a question that is being raised more and more throughout the table tennis community ! I don't know but I think ITTF should make some regulations about any rubber to be allowed in an international competition should be made sufficiently available ! Its almost like fighting somebody with an automatic rifle with a shotgun :)
... And of course big congratulations to Andrew and to all English ping pong fans !

True! However, you can't minimize the mind of people ready to learn more about other activities. I have been around French people, many are into trying new things.

I live in Cambridgeshire, UK and listen to an American podcast called tabletennistalk (by table tennis junkie from Youtube and his partner), there's a really interesting episode with Dan Seemiller. Experttabletennis.com, UK based still has all it's old podcasts up some good ones on there. Also good stuff on youtube like the pingpongshow (Baggaley), though searching for that is precarious. Anyone got other suggestions?
