I also think this competition seems to have no importance. For spectators it should be still interesting to watch top Euro players but it looks that there just some. Table tennis is not popular in Portugal?...
The funny part for me was when i watched the prize money for this:
Winner € 2.000
Runner – up € 1.000
3rd and 4th place (2 x) € 500
5th to 8th place (4 x) € 250

But wait!
You know what is even more funny?
Hospitality:
Single room: EUR 220 per person per night
Double room: EUR 180 per person per night

So poor guys who have to fight till end for 3-8 places because still they will be in big minus :D

Seriuosly, it is very sad :(

You're right. Table tennis is not popular in Portugal. It's embarassing because we have some good players. But here is all about football.
In Ring hockey we're 15 times world champion and 20 times Euro champion. the clubs won Champions league multiple times, champions in tai kwon do, judo, etc, but you go read a sport newspaper and in 40 pages, 12 is about the 3 main clubs (F.C. Porto Benfica and Sporting) 5 about the other nacional clubs, 2 for lower divisions, 1 for futsal, 1 for formation divisions, 4 for international football, 9 pages for crap (front and back, publicity, etc) and then 6 pages for all the other sports. This in todays paper.
I love football, don't get me wrong, but really? Is the only thing out there???

Friday i went to the games and there were about 150 people there. What can i say? Sad....
Yesterday my wife went with some friends and only the games with Apolónia and Monteiro had more then 200people...

About the rooms i didn't know that. If it's that much they must be in the most expensive hotels of Porto. It's actually cheap renting rooms in good hotels here. about 80€ per night in a 4* hotel. Of course, if they choose luxury, there are hotel rooms here for 1000€ per night.

:D:D offering someone 250 euros is pathetic and embarrasing. I cant imagine ANY other pro sport that would offer that as prize money. Imagine offering that to a tennis player (I wont mention football, as that is a different world altogether) 250 euros is not even enough to pay for Andy Murrays aperitif prior to a meal ....

Totally agree, but...

No television - no sponsorship - small prize money.

It's all connected.

The ITTF made so many rule changes to get more spectators from the mass of non-players (e.g. bigger balls, games to 11, and so on) and still the spectators don't come in masses.

The thing is if even active hobby players rather watch football, something's got to be fishy.
IMHO instead of tryin' to get someone not related to tabletennis to watch our beloved beautiful sport, they (the ITTF) should rather try to get at least the ones to watch that love the sport anyway.
The WCPP was a perfect example how TT-Events can be marketed.
The atmosphere was very intense and quite different to 'regular' tabletennis.
Tabletennis can learn a thing or two from that.

But having an image as a playground/park activity i believe it's not that easy for things to change.

Just my 2 ¢

Shiba was on fire. The match with Monteiro was very close as well. I wish I could see Shibaev in finals :(
Yeah, Shibaev played extraordinarily well. I expected a close match, but he really didn't give Karlsson a chance except in the 4th when Karlsson slowed down and played a much tighter game.

But with a coach like Alexander Petkevich by your side, you don't need to worry too much. He'll see that and get you back in the following game. And that's exactly what happened. Shibaev opened up the game again, took back control and dictated almost every point in the 5th. Congrats to Shibaev, very well played :)

I agree, the prize money is rubbish, but for the players the tournament is not at all a waste of time or unimportant. It has great importance as the top 3 gets to play in the World Cup. That's a prize well worth playing for.

Thanks brabhamista,

i was waitin' for this to be posted. :)
