Liu Guoliang, the current Chinese head team coach has won major titles including the World Championships, World Cup and the Olympic Games. Liu is the second man to win all 3 majors and is considered by many as the greatest player of all time. Liu's playing style is of a short pimple rubber with a penhold grip. He is the forerunner for the reverse backhand topspin played with a penhold grip often seen by Xu Xin, Wang Hao and Ma Lin.

Liu is also not bad as a shakehand player to! Check the vid below. The video was taken in the training hall of the WTTC 2011 in Rotterdam.

Most great players tend to play both grips (at various skills levels). It's just rare to see it. I've seen Wang Hao play Shakehand and Liqin play pendhold. If what I was told holds merit, Liqin actually started out playing penhold.
