Why Penholders Use Hard Top Plies?

Just wondering...

Ma Lin, Wang Hao, Xu Xin all use blades with walnut top ply. Why do you think they use a hard top ply?

Ma Lin loop-drives a lot, but Wang Hao's and Xu Xin's game are more about looping at mid-distance. Won't a soft top ply help generate more spin?

I don't know much about equipment, but if they do use the same ply, it's probably because it gives a good feeling. Spin is generated through skill and rubber. I don't think the wood has as much as a large effect.

I'm a lefty penholder by the way.

I'm pretty sure Wang Hao used Koto top ply (all the blades in Hurricane Hao series has koto top ply)...
though still hard top ply yes.
I think it's because those types of blades are steady/stable (not varying flex) and the best for counter hit/loops.
And because those types of blades probably makes a perfected technuiqe work better than soft top ply blades.
in terms of spin I think the chinese rely mainly on their chinese rubber together as well as technique ofc...

I also bet Xu Xin/wang Hao has tried blades with softer plies and has concluded that because of several factors, harder plies are better... but for all the reasons we'd have to ask them probably. :v

I think hard top ply generate more power. When you have great technique you don't need extra dwell provide by soft plys, and when you play against the best players in earth even a little more speed provide benefits. Not only penholder but all of top players use fast blades (excluding defensives)

it's for fingers I guess. An hard blade is better under fingers, you will get better control

I think it's just accidental. Both of them prefers harder top plies.

seems like everybody who is using all wood is using hard top ply.
the others are using composite.

Every player has his/her own preference. Xu Xin just happens to like Walnut.
