Last night:

Instead of going to a practice table, I went to a table where they play matches and waited my turn. My gameplay is inconsistent. Lately been trying to play more matches and have been losing to partners above my level. No video.

1. vs a JPen

I've never beaten him in a match, and usually lose 3-0, at best lose 3-1. Last night I lost 3-1, but it was a glorious loss!

+13, -11, -6, -4

Mentally drained after game 1... 2nd game I'm losing 8-4 and i caught up to make it deuce and more mental draining LOL ... losing steam, my RPB loop made it 60% of the time and instead of my instinctive HULK SMASH rushing my smash and strokes, I actively slowed down and took care to make the shot. Instead of smash on balls I would normally smash, I just FH stroke the ball and actively looked to return the ball. Those 2 were huge factors in my gameplay vs this JPen. We both laughed as we played as he knows my game and enjoy the points. He adjusted to hit more to my FH as he saw my RPB loops were giving him a little trouble and I didn't adjust as I was actively trying to get RPB into my game instead of TPB. Happy to report, didn't use my TPB outside of 1 shot. But sometimes I'm so fixated on RPB that I would RPB from my FH side and couldn't adjust to use a FH shot instead.

All in all... happy with the loss. Don't care if I win or lose, just wanted to see if I've improved and this match was a good sign for me.

2. vs a 2000+ (may be 2100)

Improbable I would win, it's mentally liberating and helped my game as I focused on RPB and not on winning/losing.

Lost 3 straight: -2, -6, -4 LOL

Interesting note to self: on my serves I'm FH oriented... on my serve receives I'm RPB-oriented. Had 2 nice rockets serves which caught him by surprise ... one I 3rd ball muscle memory smash fast for a winner and another I caught him with a rocket serve down the line.

l focused too much on RPB and ended up pushing with it, if i pushed TPB style, would've had a better chance.

Despite the disparity in skill levels, happy with my play against him. Thanked him for his time and match.

May all the net and edge balls go your way TTD CCers!

Today I struggled to decide whether I should bring my new rubber to the store to have it glued or do it myself.
The cost isn't a problem, as I am keen to do it but also scared to screw up as the rubber is quite valuable to me. I also feel the store owners would be able to cut the edges better than me as they have alot more experience.

Hey, can I ask, where is there a table tennis specialist store in Australia!? I thought that ordering online from OOAK was the closest I could get to local store haha!

I think OOAK is the closest online store too!
The one that I thought of bringing my bat is a local one that doesn't have online ordering.

Went to TT last night. Didn't hit/play well. A few factors contributed to poor performance with the biggest factor being hitting on a table with a white wall behind. I have trouble picking up the ball visually. I wear glasses but I don't while I play. I have been hesitant to wear glasses as I play, but I may have to.

I wasn't warmed up properly vs K. Lost 3-0, mostly at 5. I usually rush my shots especially against him as he likes to lob and lob with sidespin. Last night quite a few points I slowed down and the point lasted longer as I played steady to just return the ball. On that I am happy ... need to work more on not rushing my shots.

Still adjusting to new extended fingers grip for all my strokes and not feeling comfortable yet. It's been about 7 weeks now of average 3x a week practice.

Hit with a partner who is above me. His shots are all faster than mine. Unconsciously I start rushing my shots and missed many. Took a deep breath here and there and concentrated on not rushing and hit steadier then. Perhaps he also slowed down his shots.

Not totally happy about last night, but happy about the slow progress on adjusting to new grip/blade/rubber and trying not to rush despite my inconsistent time at the TT clubs.

OSPH... it will be slow often. Even hitting real slow with the express intent of keeping it on the table will have lasting accumulated value.

I know of many players in club who all they did was pretty much that and after 5 or 6 years developed totally excellent feel at impact that gave them control in matches.

Anytime anyone gets discouraged with slow progress or being relegated to hit with knobs, take heart that you are alive and still growing your game immensely.

Thank you Der... i hope my post didn't come across as I'm disappointed in the slow progress. On the contrary, I'm enjoying my journey in relearning the game and viewing it as a work in progress.

Although I learnt TT as a teen, either i didn't learn properly or trained properly, and/or the 32 yrs break are all factors in my current strokes/game.

Lots to unlearn/undo/relearn/retrain and having fun while at it!

I know you would take a stick to my ass if you thought I meant that you are discouraged... I said what I said for the public record to encourage others.

As always, you are truly a TT Ambassador!

LOL you and the rest of the Goon Squad would've dispatched me even before I get within 10 miles of you!

In related but unrelated news, I'm guessing you heard of Jhoon Rhee and his passing on 4/30 ... generally known as the Father of Taekwondo in the USA.

RIP

roller-coaster continues with my TT level...
I had a disastrous mini-tourney last Thursday where I played really bad and lost to 2 guys i had always won easily so far. including a 0-11 loss in the 1st set !!! to be honest i was very tired, lacking a lot of sleep and not fit at all to play both physically and mentally on that day...

Actually overall I feel I've improved really a lot in the last weeks / months and all those coaching lessons are starting to show some results. No big results in tournament YET, but in training matches I'm beating guys I had not beaten in months if not years, and thats including young players training seriously and who are improving as well.

I feel stronger in every aspect of the game, and have more confidence in my technique, except serving perhaps when I am tense.

Weaknesses to keep on working on ? many, but I feel very slow against better players. Struggling also against long pushes and fast long serve.

Sir,

You lacked sleep from nerves the night before for the mini-tourney?

That's awesome to hear Sir!

I struggle with tenseness also... easy to say, hard to do: breathe, be in the moment, listen to music, sing/hum to yourself, visualization, etc. You heard and know all of this already. Just a reminder :)

Ah ok, 8 points please instead of 9 points then - i should be good for 1 rocket serve to make it :)

Seriously, perhaps work on taking one step back to handle those 2 aspects? And if a step back, work on a step forward in case of shorter balls?

@OSPH
i think your advice to find the right distance is a very good one. I will try again among other things. I think it just comes with practice. I have to play more often with stronger players who have good serves to get used to it.

When I see partners too close to the table, I will serve rocket serves to 'jam' them and wait for the usual weak return to attack. If they adjust and take a step or 2 back, then I serve short to get them back in a little :)

NYC temperatures starting to be in the 80's-90's Fahrenheit. Last night, I had no game ... perhaps the heat and/or humidity affected me/ball/table/rubbers. Probably it was mostly me ... lost steam along the way ... played 3 matches.

1. Vs my friend who came back from vacation, first time back ... we tried to warm up but both our balls were not landing. We decided to just start a match as there were people waiting for next. I jumped out to early lead in the first 2 games only to lose focus and energy and the first 2 sets went to him. 3rd game, struggled but ultimately lost at deuce.

Hydrated myself but really felt out of it. Really think it's the heat/humidity affecting me.

2. Vs a woman I played ages ago and lost - back then, it was still in my period of finding my strokes/game after a 32 yrs break from TT. After winning the first 2 games by a nice margin, lost the next 3. Really didn't feel 'all there and totally out of it'. I should've went home. But i rested, hydrated and waited my turn.

3. Played a friend I didn't play in ages. Jumped to early lead in first 2 games and yep you guessed it, lost both sets. 1st set, I'm winning 7-0 and lost 11-7! 3rd game lost at deuce.

A warning for me in that summer is almost here and I must hydrate.

Some comments:

1. My serves were 60% successful.
2. My RPB was 60-70% successful. Had a few RPB loop down the line winners. Had 1 RPB smash on a high ball. Pure luck. Although I don't recall doing a NextLevel whip RPB stroke, I had 1 sweet RPB whip
3. Concentrated on RPB and tried not using FH. 4x I used TPB.

Despite the losses, and the heat/humidity, happy that slowly my RPB is coming along as well getting used to the 'new' (now old setup). It's been about 7 weeks of 2-3x/week playing with the setup.

Hoping all the DTT CCers are having their best games ever!

Went to ICC 4 star tourney this weekend. 4 of us formed a formidable Goon Squad of our own with a plan.

We decided to get together, have a traditional Romanian meal, hold role call, and get the heck out of Dodge and on the road.

Members present were:

TTD Member "erm"
Der_Echte
erm's LP puncher friend
Hopefully soon to be new TTD member "Scoobie", I will name myself something else, Sergey.

We hit the road and fought through traffic, made it to Berkley TTC. Our plan was to have some fun in Friday night league, rent a motel, and get up a little later in AM, then hit the IIC TT tourney Sat AM.

We somehow made it early to Berkley TTC. That place used to have a really strong Friday night league with group one fielding 2150-2200+ as minimum last position player. Our timing was bad or good depending on perspective - bad since the top players were resting in preparation for the big tourney, or GOOD if we wanted to compete and win.

Player groups were 6 players.

On the top table, group one, Sergey, I am not Scoobie, but will call myself something else, finished position #1. Positions #2 and #3 were won by erm and his LP friend.

I embellished my sorry-azz 1774 USATT rating up to 1900 and got placed in Group 2 (Table Two for the Europeans reading this) There were a LOT of strond under-rated players in group 2. Of the other 5, I say 4 of them could really keep it on the table and extend rallies. TWO of them had advanced, consistent, fearless spin attacking games.

I somehow managed to avoid losing each match. I lost two games all night. One to #6 and #3 players. Those guys could bring it. TT Member "erm" had slapped a juicy sheet of Vega Pro on the FH side of my LISSOM blade. Oh yeah, I am using Lissom, because I drop kicked/punted to the sky one of my Kim Jung Hoon bats after missing an easy BH loop vs Scoobie I am not.

That night, I promised to use the LISSOM for a few months with a juicy rubber, like Karis + or something. erm beat me to the punch. I can say, such a setup has a better top end than you would think. Control is great and so is touch. I keep a few more balls on the table and that counts for a lot.

In the tourney, all my TT friends advanced and went far. Two of my friends me in the quarter finals of an event. I am not scoobie went on. All my friends did real well and gained, Sergey the most, likely re-rated upwards significantly. I got to cheer very loudly for him, got many chances to do so, since I got booted out of my first group.

California once again said Der_Echte better hit the training hall. I could not read the touch of either of the Indian cadets in my U2100 group. I had the shots, spin and power to trouble them and win, but ultimately, could not read the ball on their shots enough to be in the right position and time.

Events ran real late real early, despite all 20 tables being literally not used for matches for a full hour after the group stage of the first event... this was real puzzling. All day long, tables were mostly being used only 50-75% for matches, except for when an event actually started. 4 hours wait for knock-out single elimination stage was a norm that day. One player we saw, showed up at 0830 AM for the first event of the day, and as entries were too numerous, top 8 were seeded out of group stage for a bye. Good for them, but these had to wait until nearly 1700 PM to player their single elimination group of 32 matches... an 11 hr delay - yeah !!

The only good thing Der_Echte did was dominate his 3 player group in U1950. (player "D" defaulted due to some long wait). I was player B and really gave it to the two Indian young adults who were in my group. I had no problem reading their shots spun and smashed them out of the gym 3-0. One of them asked my if I had been 2000 rated before... haha, only in my dreams, I never made that rating yet. (only in leagues, but that doesn't count)

After a 4.5 hr wait, I played my U1950 round of 16 match ( I somehow got a bye in round of 32) and I had to meet up again with that chopper, lobber, slow topspinner Indian kid. Man, I could not consistently read his touch. He was consistent and had wheels and almost never missed, so credit him with his 1950 California rating (that will likely be 2150 after the tourney) but damn, his impact on half his shots was weird and very tough to read. I missed more shots than I wanted to. I was the only player that day who troubled that kid on topspins... he blocked a lot of them long and out and made a scowl. Kid was too good, so he deserved his wins, I deserved my losses, but damn, it really bites. That is the TT life and I would not trade it away.

I will likely make a small ratings gain. Whooptie-doo. Still, I lived up to what I said after I broke my KJH... that I would use LISSOM and still show improvement and trouble people like a trouble maker.

We all changed under-clothes and jerseys at the venue and hit the road again to go in search of chow... called TT-Monster for tech assistance and settled on a great Afghani place... a real good choice by everyone's consensus and the empty plates spoke loud.

Said our goodbyes to Monster after a couple hour chat, hit the road, got to erm's place, drove up to Sacramento, dropped off my two friends, then drove another 40 minutes to my place. I arrived at 0100 hrs Sunday AM... mission completed 12 hours too late according to Mrs. Der_Echte. I caused my own trouble :(

These TT missions are the stuff of legend and I would encourage all to do a few in their life... and talk about it on the TT forums.

Congratulations Der on surviving another Goon Squad mission and also congratulations to the rest of the Goon Squad!

I'm using Vega Pro on my BH and like it a lot.

Did you wave bye and kiss your biceps? Enquiring minds want to know!

In any competitive endeavor where there is a 'winner' and a 'loser' ... competitors win by competing in the first place. A loss is really Experience. A win is really Experience. Win some, lose some, but ultimately the competitor won, even in a loss, if they can learn something from the loss. Just because a competitor won, they should also be able to learn something from the win.

Yeah i hear ya Der! After joining on your previous NYC Goon Squad missions and getting home late, i was in the doghouse for a week LOLOL

Congratulations on a great Goon Squad mission! Thank you for sharing!

edit: and yikes on 4.5 - 11 hours delay/waiting between matches ... ages ago, i used to compete in the monthly Westfield, NJ touraments and as well as they were run, it was still a ~3 hrs wait IIRC. and only allowed 5 mins warmup ... i need like 10 mins to warmup LOL

It seems ICC has broken their own record in terms of making people wait .. this is the very reason a lot of people don't like to play ICC .. especially the ones from in an around the area because it takes up the whole day if you qualify from your group ... anyways ..i dropped in yesterday as well to see the semifinals of the open singles ... Eugene Wang was competing .. and it was worth the 10$ entry free  to see Eugene Wang play the top players/coaches from ICC and Swan . The ICC coach is probably in his late 40s or 50s , plays with the 80s Chinese style ... short pips traditional penhold , mostly third ball attacks .. he gave quite a fright to Eugene and was leading 3-1 before Eugene came back to take the match 11-8/9 in the seventh ... very similar scoreline but different result against Tao Wenzhang in the final ... it was a lot of fun watching Eugene going to work and figuring out a way to get back into matches .. and there were some crazy rallies in the final ... considering Eugene was rated 2810 , I believe Tao will probably cross 2800 now ...
