In the post-match interview, Ma Long was first asked about the match against a defensive player. He said, "I played against defensive players in Olympic Games and World Championships. But it has been a while and it is a challenge to my form. Although the result was 3-0, the match was quite close. I won't know how much my muscles will be affected until tomorrow."

That was a great match to watch (only too short!), I love Filus' big backhand whacks.

At the beginning of this video, you can see Ma Long's racket. There are two yellow stripes on the handle, while only one yellow stripe on his previous ones and the new commercial edition. It is said that the two-striped is actually an error batch.

In a recent interview with Table Tennis World Magazine, Yu Ziyang, newly crowned World Team Champion, said that Ma Long is his role model. "Brother Long has made great impact on me. He takes me with him during daily training. What he helps me most is not that he teaches me techniques and tactics, but that he sets up a role model by doing rather than talking. I watch him and learn from him. That's already a lot for me. Brother Long is so successful while still hard-working. As a young player, I have no excuse for not working hard."

Adam Bobrow shared on Facebook a photo of Ma Long's new racket when he was with Ma Long on the shuttle bus in London. He said, "It’s like the ring... except he crawled out of his racket. For nearly 90 minutes Ma Long spoke English. I would now say he is #3 on the CNT for English. I was quite impressed with the new dad. #tabletennis #pingpong #china #malong #dragon #dictator #captain #london #whoa".

What other sports does Ma Long do other than table tennis?

Do you know there is also a China - Germany rivalry on the pool table? Back in 2008 during Beijing Olympic Games, Ma Long beat Dimitrij Ovtcharov on the pool table; in 2013, Ma Long and Xu Xin beat Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov.

During 2017 World Championships, Ma Long paired with Timo Boll to play men's doubles. When asked "Which is better, Timo Boll's Chinese or your English?", he answered, "Not as good as our Arabic". Check out if Ma Long spoke Arabic when he was at ITTF Star Awards in Doha, Qatar in Dec 2016.

Get excited for 2018 Qatar Open in Doha? The defending champion Ma Long does not attend this time. Let's take a look at his previous participation in Qatar Open.
2005 Qatar Open was Ma Long's debut in ITTF Pro/World Tour. Since then, he has attended Qatar Open for 10 more times playing both singles and doubles.
In 2009, Ma Long paired with Xu Xin to beat Wang Liqin and Hao Shuai in the doubles final.

People’s Daily, China’s largest daily newspaper, released “China in one minute” short video series to review China’s achievements in various fields. Last year, Chinese athletes won 106 world champions. Check out the familiar faces.

As the singles champion at 2017 World Championships, Ma Long is selected by Team China for the upcoming World Team Championships in Halmstad, along with Fan Zhendong (runner-up of 2017 China National Games) and Xu Xin (World Ranking #5). The remaining two spots of Team China lineup will be decided through a 10-player trial from Mar 15 to 17.

On Mar 15, Ma Long showed up in an interview in a Li-Ning WHATZUP tee with a dragon graph. "Some endings become beginnings"; as Ma Long's previous coaches Qin Zhijian and Ma Lin have left China National Team, shall we expect a new start?

On Mar 18, Ma Long left Beijing for Bremen to attend his 6th German Open. As #5 seed of singles and #5 seed of doubles paired with Xu Xin, will Ma Long continue his fortune at 2018 German Open?

The defending champion Ma Long does not attend 2017 German Open in Magdeburg. Let's take a look at his previous participations in German Open.
In 2005 German Open in Magdeburg, 17-year-old Ma Long made his debut in ITTF World Tour final after beating Oh Sang-eun by 4-2 in the quarterfinal and Timo Boll by 4-1 in the semifinal. In the final, Ma Long had a 3-1 lead but his opponent Vladimir Samsonov turned the table around and won by 4-3. In the deciding game at 6-all, Vladimir Samsonov had the faintest of edges that the umpire didn’t see. Ma Long advised the umpire that the ball had touched and corrected the score. Vladimir Samsonov and the crowd applauded the teenager; it was a magnificent display of sportsmanship.
<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FMaLongFamily%2Fvideos%2F762569840534260%2F&show_text=0&width=560" width="560" height="420" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" allowFullScreen="true"></iframe>
In 2007 German Open in Bremen, Ma Long defeat Wang Hao by 4-2 in the quarterfinal, Timo Boll by 4-0 in the semifinal and Ma Lin by 4-1 in the final. This is his first singles title in German Open and second singles title in ITTF World Tour.
In 2010 German Open in Berlin, Ma Long won doubles titles with Chen Qi and singles title after beating Dimitrij Ovtcharov by 4-0 in the quarterfinal, Chen Qi by 4-1 in the semifinal and Wang Hao by 4-1 in the final. This is the third time that he won both doubles and singles titles in one ITTF World Tour.
In 2015 German Open in Bremen, Ma Long once again obtained singles title. He beat Timo Boll by 4-0 in the quarterfinal, Dimitrij Ovtcharov by 4-2 in the semifinal despite of trailing nil-2, and Zhang Jike by 4-3 in the final despite of trailing 1-3.
In 2016 German Open in Berlin, Ma Long did not drop a single game in early rounds including the quarterfinal against Kaii Yoshida and the semifinal against Zhang Jike until he met Vladimir Samsonov in the final, 6 years after their last encounter. Vladimir Samsonov won 1 game before Ma Long secured the victory by 4-1. Both Ma Long and Vladimir Samsonov looked different from their first German Open final 11 years ago while great sportsmanship lasts and legends continue - they are the two most successful players of ITTF World Tour.

Out of 5 participations, 1 runner-up and 4 winners of singles, Ma Long was blessed in German Open. As he is currently in Germany for treatment, we wish him a quick recovery to be able to visit his old friend Rackedino in 2018 German Open.

Check out the interviews of Ma Long, Coach Liu Guozheng and Team China Delegate Huang Biao after the final of 2018 Team World Cup.
Ma Long reviewed the changes during the past 6 years since he played London Olympic Games and Liverpool World Cup in England. He commented on Koki Niwa's performance. He disagreed that China's dominance will affect the popularity of table tennis. He also expressed his willingness to keep fighting for Tokyo Olympic Games.

(Q: You are the first Chinese male athlete who has won 20 World Champion titles. What do you think?)
I still focus on training and tournaments for now. After retirement, I may think about these (records) when reviewing my athletic career.

(Q: I found the photo of you that I took 6 years ago. You have changed a lot. What do you think? What has been changed most in the past 6 years? What's the biggest challenge?)
A lot have been changed in my career during the past 6 years. 6 years ago, I was rather young, like today's Fan Zhendong and others. Now, I am the captain of the team and a table tennis star. I have mixed feelings for the past 6 years. Joy of success, and regrets for loss, are filled with my career path.

(Q: Koki Niwa gave you quite some challenges today, although you beat him by 3-1, in a quite dominant way. How do you appreciate his performance? What do you learn from him?)
It is quite normal that other players like Niwa give me challenges. They are pros, training hard every day and making preparations. Niwa is also ranked high in world rankings. It is normal that he gave me challenges. Each player has his own style. Some may find A uneasy to play against and others may find B uneasy to play against. Niwa's style is double-edged. He causes problems to his opponents but he makes a lot of unforced errors when he loses momentum. It is my performance that determined the result of the match.

(Q: You are turning 30 years old. Plus, you just became a father. How do you keep your form?)
I don't find much changed as a new father. I still put my focus on the court. In my spare time, I have more responsibilities.

(Q: You have been to many countries. What do you think can make table tennis more popular in those countries? China's dominance may not be good for the sport. What do you think?)
I don't agree. I've been to many European countries and Asian countries like Japan and Korea, where table tennis is quite popular. Some say China's dominance is not good for table tennis. But basketball is still very popular and spectacular with USA's dominance. China's dominance does not affect popularity.

(Q: What do you think can make table tennis even more popular?)
That's beyond my control.

(Q: You will continue playing.)
It is not the time to hang my racket. I will continue to focus on the court.

(Q: Will you attend Tokyo Olympic Games?)
I want to attend. But as you know, there are only 3 spots for the Olympic Games and 2 spots for singles. The competition in Team China is intense. Everyday I face challenges.

(Q: I was there at 2012 London Olympic Games and Liverpool World Cup. How do you like the stadium atmosphere then and now?)
In recent years, with the development of internet, especially after 2016 Olympic Games, sports and table tennis attract a lot of people. It's good that more people are following sports and table tennis. I hope the hype will continue.

(Q: Please review the final.)
I think we played well today. The performance during the match and the preparations before were good. We were very motivated from the beginning. In the first set of doubles, and the following sets of singles, we all had strong desire to win. It's smoother than expected.

Coach Liu Guozheng reviewed the match between Koki Niwa and Ma Long. He also spoke highly of Ma Long as the captain and backbone of the team who brings positive attitude and morale.
(Q: Team China won over Team Japan today. But Niwa gave Ma Long some pressure and challenge. What do you think of Team Japan's performance?)
Niwa is of high level. He plays smartly and has variations. When he plays with Ma Long, he needs to be aggressive. Today Ma Long was a little hasty at the beginning. He did not find the rhythm and had some unforced errors. Especially in the second game, Niwa had several great shots, including some unexpected shots. When the score was tied, Niwa had one hit on the blade edge and one net ball. He played more confidently and capitalized the leading advantage. But if it was Ma Long who made the lead, the situation might be under his control.

(Q: I felt he was a little impatient.)
A little bit. It must feel uncomfortable when the opponent was not easy to beat. But Ma Long is a superb player who can adjust his mindset under pressure, and make bold change in techniques and tactics, to turn the tide.

(Q: Do you think it a good timing for Team Japan's coach to call a time-out?)
It is normal that they called a time-out in the third game. If they lost that game, they barely had chance to win. We expected that. But that did not affect us. Ma Long already found effective tactics. He just needed to keep on. Don't be impatient. Focus one point after another. He can make it.

(Q: Some people said that Ma Long was not in a good form and energetic recently. What do you think?)
I think at this Team World Cup, Ma Long made his best to prepare for each match and play each match. As the captain and backbone of the team, he took the full leading role. He brought positive attitude and morale to the team. He did a great job.

Team Delegate Huang Biao explained why Ma Long has kept a good form from China Super League to Team World Cup: self-discipline, passion, devotion, responsibility. He also explained how Team China supports players from training to daily life.
(Q: 30-year-old Ma Long just finished playing a busy China Super League and still kept a great form at Team World Cup. We don't see fatigue on him. As team delegate, how do you help him adjust?)
Ma Long is a very self-disciplined and enterprising player. He is passionate about table tennis and devoting to table tennis. He is also responsible. These drive him internally. He has several injuries like wrist injury. We need to help players adjust, not only physical training, technique training, rehabilitation, as well as mentality and daily life. When he faces difficulties, like when his wrist needed therapy, we approved his leave. It applies to other scenarios when he needs help in daily life. We believe and understand each other. That's really helpful.

China National Team is currently holding a 1-month closed training session in Xiamen in preparation for the upcoming World Team Championships. Ma Long will join the training after 2018 German Open. Five coaches of China National Team are announced in charge of the training. Previous head coach Qin Zhijian (Ma Long's former coach from Jan 2006 to Apr 2017) and Ma Lin (Ma Long's coach since Apr 2017) are not included. It was reported that both coaches have left China National Team since Jan 2018 as a consequence of 2017 China Open incident.
On Jan 19, 2018, Ma Lin posted a photo of him and Ma Long on Sina Weibo and said, "A special photo of two of us. Always keep the initial goal in mind. Self-reliance makes a strong man strong." What a farewell!
29432794_844994775625099_8222937814889302764_n.png

Ma Lin used to be Ma Long's teammate and rival; he is also Ma Long's good friend and brother. Together they won 4 World Team Championships (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012), 1 Team World Cup (2011), 2 Asian Games Team Champions (2006, 2010), and 2 Asian Team Championships (2007, 2011). They paired for doubles and the best result was runner-up at 2008 Korea Open. They played 15 times in international singles tournaments from 2007 to 2012 and Ma Long won 11 times. They also competed for the last spot to represent Team China in team event at 2012 London Olympic Games.
29386560_844994858958424_5137455476750353927_n.jpg

At 2010 Moscow World Team Championships, Ma Lin scored twice for Team China to beat Team Germany after Ma Long lost to Timo Boll. Ma Lin kissed the table after the match. This must be an unforgettable moment for Ma Long because he also kissed the table after he scored twice for Team China to beat Team Japan at 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
29386995_844995128958397_119343750221670445_n.png

Ma Long together with Xu Xin were Ma Lin's best men in his wedding on Dec 8, 2013. Upon Ma Lin's retirement from China National Team in Feb 2014, it was Ma Long who presented him a bouquet.

29467928_844995222291721_4101249376220554834_n.png

Ma Long sometimes even has dreams in which he was playing against Ma Lin, revealed by Coach Liu Guodong during commentating 2016 ITTF Grand Finals, as Ma Long mentioned his dreams on Wechat Moments (a social app for close friends). When Ma Long wished Ma Lin a happy birthday in Feb 2017, he teased him, "You look much slimmer. I am referring to the tee." Ma Lin put on some weight and the tee he wore that day is actually a gift from Ma Long bought in Qatar, which Ma Lin revealed during commentating 2017 Marvelous 12 Trials.
29388927_844995305625046_2465814274775406357_n.png

Ma Lin was one of the featured commentators during Marvelous 12 Trials in Mar 2017. He spoke highly of Ma Long that he has a complete understanding of table tennis and can make the best choice on each point at will and at ease. He was also very familiar with Ma Long's techniques, tactics and mindset. During the match between Ma Long and Zhou Qihao, Ma Long unusually made 5 long serves in a row and Ma Lin made right guesses.
Ma Lin became Ma Long's coach since Apr 2017. During closed training in preparation for 2017 WTTC, they worked hard together to adapt to the new Nitakku ball. It was not an easy task to coach Ma Long, to understand him and to convince him. Ma Lin called the new coach-player duo "Maybach", which logo consists of a fat M (Ma Lin) and a slim M (Ma Long), and the fastest car in the world indicated his ambition and faith in Ma Long.
29432328_844999718957938_840190551158369400_n.jpg

Ma Lin and Ma Long both had "misfortunes" at World Championships singles event, losing to the same Wang (Wang Liqin for Ma Lin and Wang Hao for Ma Long) three times in a row. The curse that Ma cannot win World Champion was broken in 2015 Suzhou and Ma Lin commentated the final and witnessed Ma Long's victory. Ma Lin did not go to Düsseldorf in May 2017, and he hoped that Ma Long would be able to play his own style, to play what he had prepared in the closed training, and make table tennis an art. That's what Ma Long showed to the world. After Ma Long defended World Champion, Ma Lin revealed a photo that Ma Long got a cortisone injection on May 19; all the victories come along with pains and efforts.
29495849_844995542291689_7917189453137688477_n.jpg

Ma Lin had planned how to greet Ma Long when he came back to Beijing but a simple high-five was what he did. Then they went to 2017 Japan Open together to visit the stadium for 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games; Ma Long won both singles and doubles champions and everything seemed on the right track. However, one week later, they stood together in support of Coach Liu Guoliang and forfeited 2017 China Open. Since then they were no longer able to work together in any international tournament.
The photo Ma Lin posted on Jan 19, 2018 was after Ma Long defended singles champion at China National Games on Sep 6, 2017. He said he was worried about Ma Long's form when he lost in team event and doubles but he always has faith in Ma Long: he was born for table tennis.
Two legends and two brothers. Let's wish them the best in the future.

In the first round of men's doubles at 2018 German Open, Ma Long / Xu Xin faced Chinese Taipei's Liao Cheng-Ting / Lin Yun-ju. What a narrow escape after 0-2 down and at 10:10 tie in the third game in a best-of-five match! They seized the third game by 12:10, gradually found the form and turned the table by 3-2 (7:11, 7:11, 12:10, 11:3, 11:7). In the quarterfinal, they will face Germany's Patrick Franziska and Denmark's Jonathan Groth.
